For (A) (no missing lines or no horizontal white streaks) in both the pattern (C) and pattern (D):1. The cleaning is not required. Tap All A. 2. Confirm the message, then tap OK. The screen will return to the Maintenance screen. For (B) (lines are missing or horizontal white streaks are present) in the pattern (C) or pattern (D), or in both patterns: 1. The cleaning is required. Tap Also B. The cleaning confirmation screen will appear. 2. Tap Yes. The machine starts cleaning the print head. Cleaning the Print Head Note • The total number of sheets printed so far is shown in increments of 50 sheets on the printout of the nozzle check pattern. 221
Cleaning the Print HeadClean the print head if lines are missing or if horizontal white streaks are present in the printed nozzle checkpattern. Cleaning unclogs the nozzles and restores the print head condition. Cleaning the print head consumes ink, so clean the print head only when necessary. You need to prepare: a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper1. Make sure that the power is turned on. 2. Load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the cassette 2. After inserting the cassette into the machine, the paper information registration screen is displayed on the touch screen. Select A4 or Letter for Page size and Plain paper for Type , then tap Register. If a message is displayed on the screen, follow the directions in the message to complete registration. 3. Open the paper output tray. 1. Holding both sides of the paper output tray, gently open it. The output tray extension will open automatically when the paper output tray is opened. 2. Extend the paper output support. Important • If the disc tray guide is open, close it. 4. Clean the print head. 1. Flick the HOME screen, then tap Setup . Using the Operation Panel The setup menu screen will appear. 2. Tap Maintenance . The Maintenance screen will appear. 3. Tap Cleaning . 222
The confirmation screen will appear. 4. Tap Yes. The machine starts cleaning the print head. Do not perform any other operations until the machine completes the cleaning of the print head. This takes about 2 to 3 minutes. The pattern print confirmation screen will appear. 5. Tap Yes. The nozzle check pattern will be printed. 5. Examine the nozzle check pattern . Note • If the problem is not resolved after cleaning the print head twice, clean the print head deeply. 223
Cleaning the Print Head DeeplyIf print quality does not improve by the standard cleaning of the print head, clean the print head deeply. Cleaning the print head deeply consumes more ink than the standard cleaning of the print head, so clean the print head deeply only when necessary. You need to prepare: a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper1. Make sure that the power is turned on. 2. Load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the cassette 2. After inserting the cassette into the machine, the paper information registration screen is displayed on the touch screen. Select A4 or Letter for Page size and Plain paper for Type , then tap Register. If a message is displayed on the screen, follow the directions in the message to complete registration. 3. Do not perform any other operations until the machine completes the deep cleaning of the print head. This takes about 2 to 3 minutes. The pattern print confirmation screen will appear. 5. Tap Yes. The nozzle check pattern will be printed. 6. When the completion message appears, tap OK. 5. Examine the nozzle check pattern . If a particular color is not printed properly, replace the ink tank of that color. If the problem is not resolved, turn off the power and clean the print head deeply again after 24 hours. If the problem is still not resolved, the print head may be damaged. Contact the service center. 225
Aligning the Print HeadIf printed ruled lines are misaligned or print results are otherwise unsatisfactory, adjust the print headposition. Note • If the remaining ink level is low, the print head alignment sheet will not be printed correctly. Replace the ink tank whose ink is low. You need to prepare: a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper (including recycled paper)* * Be sure to use paper that is white and clean on both sides. 1. Make sure that the power is turned on. 2. Load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the cassette 2. After inserting the cassette into the machine, the paper information registration screen is displayed on the touch screen. The print head alignment sheet will be printed and the print head position will be adjusted automatically. This takes about 3 to 4 minutes. Important • Do not open the operation panel while printing is in progress. Note • If the automatic adjustment of the print head position has failed, the error message appears on the touch screen. A Message Is Displayed 5. When the completion message appears, tap OK. Note • If the print results are still not satisfactory after adjusting the print head position as described above, align the print head manually . Make sure that the power is turned on. 2. Load three sheets of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the cassette 2. 3.Tap Manual head alignment . The confirmation screen will appear. Note • To print and check the current head position adjustment values, select Print the head alignment value . 4. Tap Yes. The print head alignment pattern is printed. Important • Do not open the operation panel while printing is in progress. 5. When the message " Did the patterns print correctly? " appears, confirm that the pattern is printed correctly, tap Yes. 6. Confirm the message, then tap Next. The input screen for the head position adjustment values will appear. 5. Look at the first pattern and adjust the print head position. 1. Tap A to check the printed patterns, and tap the number of the pattern in column A that has the least noticeable vertical streaks. 229
Note • If it is difficult to pick the best pattern, pick the setting that produces the least noticeable vertical streaks. (A) Unnoticeable vertical streaks (B) Noticeable vertical streaks 2. Repeat the same procedure until you finish inputting the pattern number for columns B to H, then tap OK. For columns G and H, pick the setting that produces the least noticeable horizontal streaks at the position indicated by an arrow. Note • If it is difficult to pick the best pattern, pick the setting that produces the least noticeable horizontal streaks. (C) Unnoticeable horizontal streaks (D) Noticeable horizontal streaks 3. Confirm the message, then tap OK. The second pattern is printed. 230
