7-4Paper Jams Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams When a paper jam occurs, confirm the messages first, then remove the paper following the procedure. W ARNING There are some areas inside the printer which are subject to high-voltages. When removing jammed paper or when inspecting the inside of the printer, do not allow necklaces, bracelets, or other metal objects to touch the inside of the printer, as this may result in burns or electrical shock. CAUTION •The fixing unit and its surroundings inside the printer are hot during use. Make sure the fixing unit is completely cool before removing the jammed paper. Touching the fixing unit when it is still hot may result in burns. •When removing jammed paper, take care not to allow the toner to come into contact with your hands or clothing, as this will dirty your hands or clothing. If they become dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing with warm water will set the toner and make it impossible to remove the toner stains. •When removing paper jammed inside the printer, remove the jammed paper g ently to prevent the toner on the paper from scattering and getting into your ey es or mouth. If the toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wash them immediately with cold water and immediately consult a physician. •When removing jammed paper, take care not to cut your hands with the edges of the paper. •K eep your hands or clothing away from the roller in the output area after removing jammed paper completely. Even if the printer is not printing, sudden r otation of the roller may catch your hands or clothing, resulting in personal injury. IMPORTANT •Remove jammed paper while the power of the printer is ON. If the power is turned OFF, the data being printed will be deleted. •Applying excess force may result in tearing paper or damaging the parts in the printer. When removing jammed paper, pull out the paper in the most appropriate direction, judging from the position of the paper. •If paper is torn, be sure to find and remove any remaining pieces of paper. •The error message may remain if jammed paper is removed without opening the front cover. In this case, open and close the front cover once.
7-5 Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams • Be sure not to touch the high-voltage contacts (A) or electrical contact (B) shown in the figure, as this may result in damage to the printer. •Be sure not to touch the transfer roller (C). This may result in deterioration in print quality. (B) (A) (C)
7-6 Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams • The surroundings of the face-down output tray and face-up output tray are hot during printing or immediately after printing. When taking out of the paper or removing jammed paper, be careful not to touch the surroundings of the face-down output tray or face-up output tray.
7-7 Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams Procedure for Clearing Paper Jams Remove the jammed paper using the following procedure. 1Confirm all the messages that appear in the display. Messages appear one at a time. Confirm all of them. As the messages disappear when the cover is open, take a note of them if\ required. The messages indicate where the paper is jammed, and there are the following kinds. 7-8 Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams 2If you are using the multi-purpose tray and see the jammed paper inside the multi-purpose tray, simply pull out the paper to remove it. 3Close the multi-purpose tray. b c a
7-9 Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams 4Open the front cover. While pressing the lever on the top of the front cover, open it gently. 5Remove the toner cartridge from the printer. NOTE For details on handling toner cartridges, see Precautions for Handling Toner Cartridges, on p. 6-12.
7-10 Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams 6Place the toner cartridge into the protective bag. 7Raise the transport guide, then tilt it toward you. Holding the green tab, raise the transport guide, then tilt it toward you. CAUTION Do not take your hands off the transport guide. The transport guide may snap back to its original position, and this may result in personal injury.
7-11 Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams 8Remove any jammed paper by pulling it in the direction of the arrow. Remove the jammed paper gently to prevent unfixed toner from spilling. IMPORTANT If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, do not try to remove it forcefully but proceed to the next step. 9Gently move the transport guide back to its original position. CAUTION Do not take your hands off the transport guide until the transport guide moves back to its original position. The transport guide may snap back to its original position, and this may result in personal injury.
7-12 Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams 10Check the face-down output tray and remove any jammed paper. IMPORTANT If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, do not try to remove it forcefully but proceed to the next step. NOTE If no toner is on the removed paper, it may adhere to the paper to be printed next. 11Open the face-up output tray. Open the face-up output tray completely as shown in the figure.
7-13 Troubleshooting 7 Paper Jams 12Tu rn the green dial in the face-up output tray in the direction of the arrow to send any jammed paper. When you have been performing 2-sided printing 13Close the face-up output tray.
