8-9 Maintenance 2 Remove the toner \bartridge. 3 Take out the new toner \bartridge from the prot e\btive bag. You can open the pr\Iotective bag with your hands from the notch. * Keep the prot ective bag. You will need them w\Ihen you remove the toner cartridge for printer maintenance or other pu\Irposes. 4 Gently shake the toner \bartridge five or six times to e venly distribute the toner inside the \bartridge. 5 Pla\be the toner \bartridge on a flat surfa\be. 6 \fold the tab, and the pull out th\Le sealing tapes (appro ximately 20” (50 \bm)). IMPORTANT Precau\bion\f when pulling \uou\b \bhe \fealing \bape Do not pull the seali\Ing tape at an angle\I or up and down. If the tape breaks, it may not be pulled out\I completely. Front View • If the sealing tape \Iis still hanging outside the toner cartridge, pull it out completely . If the tape remains inside the \Itoner cartridge, it may cause poor print quality. If you are using the Fax, please note that you can only print the received data once, because the received data is deleted once it is printed. • Dispose of the sea\Iling tape according to local r egulations. 7 Insert the toner \bartridge. Fit (A) on both sides o\If the toner cartridge into the guides located on both sides of t\Ihe machine and slid\Ie the toner cartr idge into the machine until the t\Ioner cartridge comes to rest and is held aga\Iinst the back of the ma\Ichine. (A) (A) 8 Close the front \bover. If you canno\b clo\fe \bhe fron\b cover Make sure that the toner cartridge is installed c\Iorrectly. Do not try to forcefully close the toner cover, as this may damage the machine. Precau\bion\f When Replacing Toner Car\bridge See “Maintenance and Inspections” (→P. xv) in “Important Safety Instructions” as well. WARNING Do no\b di\fpo\fe of a u\fed \boner car\bridge in an open flame. This may ignite the toner remaining inside th\Ie cartridge, resulting in burns or fire. CAUTION Precau\bion\f \bo \bake when you ge\b \boner on\bo your hand\f or clo\bhing If toner gets on your hands or clothi\Ing, wash them immediately with cold water. The toner sets onto hands or into clothing if you try to wash it with warm water. \fnce it is set, y\Iou can hardly remove the toner stains. Be careful no\b \bo \fca\b\ber \bhe \boner. Do not pull out the \Isealing tape forcefully or stop pulling the tape halfway, as this may cause toner to spill out. If toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wash \Ithem immediately with cold water and consult a ph\Iysician.

Please be aware that there are counterfeit Canon toner cartridges in the marketplace. Use of counterfeit toner cartridges may result in poor print quality or machine performance. If the toner is not distributed evenly inside the car\Itridge, this may cause poor print quality. Hold \bhe \boner car\bridge\f properly. When handling the t\Ioner cartridge, hold it properly, as shown in the illustration be\Ilow. Do not stand it vertically or hold it u\Ipside down. Do no\b \bouch \bhe elec\brical con\bac\b\f (A) or \bhe \boner car\bridge memory (B), and do no\b op\uen \bhe drum pro\bec\bive cover (C). Touching the electrical contacts (A) or the toner cartridge memory (B) may result in damage to the machine. Print quality may deteriorate if you touch or damage the\I photoconductor drum. This may result in damage to the cartridge. (D) (E) Mi\fcellaneou\f precau\bion\f • Do not expose the t\Ioner cartridge to direct sunlight or strong light. • Never disassemble or m\Iodify it. • Condensation may f orm in and on the toner cartridge if it is brought into an environment that expose\Is it to sudden changes in temperature and/or humidity. If you move the toner cartridge to a location that i\Is warmer or has higher humidit\Iy, leave the cartridge in the new location for 2 hours or longer w\Iithout opening the\I protective bag to allow it to adjust to the new temperature. • Do not leav e the front cover open for a long time with\I the toner cartridges installed. • Keep the toner car tridge away from equipment that \Igenerates magnetic fields, such as LCD displays and computers. • A toner cartridge is a magnetic product. Keep the toner cartridge away from products that may be damaged by magnetism, such as a floppy disk or disk drive. This may lead to damage to data. NOTE Abou\b \bhe packing ma\berial\f The packing materials are subject to change in form or placement, or may be added or removed without notice. When i\f \fe\b \bo The machine continu\Ies printing the received fax if the toner cartridge is not replaced. Note that the output \Imay not be clear, as subtle details such\I as thin lines and \Ilight colors may not be clearly reproduced, due to a small amount of\I toner remaining inside th\Ie toner cartridge. 8-14 Maintenance Before transporting the machine, see “Precautions When Relocating the Machine” (→P. 8-15) Follow the steps in the procedure \felow to relocate the machine somewhere else for maintenanc e and other purposes. 1 Turn the power O\f\f, then dis\bonne\bt the \bables and \bord from the ma\bhine. Telephone \bables*(7) Remove it from the machine. * Whether the ca\fle is connec ted or not var ies depending on your envir onment. 2 If you are using the multi-pu\Lrpose tray, \blose it. 3 Pull out the paper dr\Lawer. 4 Carry the ma\bhine to the new installation site. After making sure that the cover and tray are closed, hold the handle on the front to lift and transport the machine. Check the weight of the machi\Ine so it can be ca\Irried safely. When \bhe op\bional pap\uer feeder i\f in\f\balled Remove the paper feeder from the machine, install it in the\I new installation site, then transport the machine. * Do not carr y the machine with\I the paper feeder installed. If you do so, the paper feeder may drop, resulting in persona\Il injury. 5 Put the ma\bhine down \barefully at the new installation sit e. Reloca\bing \bhe Machine When \bran\fpor\bing \bhe machine lon\ug di\f\bance To prevent damage to the machine during transport, perform the following. • Remove the toner cartr idges * “Storing Toner Cartridges” (→ P. 8-7) • Securely pack the printer in the orig inal \fox with packing mat erials * If the original \fox and packing mat erials are not av aila\fle, find an appropr iate \fox along with packing mat erials and pack the machine and the parts appropr iately.

Make sure that the scannin\Ig platform and paper drawer are closed before lifting, carrying, and relocating the machi\Ine. CAUTION Se\b \bhe machine down \flowly and carefully. Be careful not to hurt your hands or finge\Irs. WARNING When reloca\bing \bhe machine Be sure to turn off the power switches of the machin\Ie and your computer, and unplug the po\Iwer plug and interface cables. Failure to do so can damage\I the cables or cords, resulting in a fire or electrical shock.
