Troubleshooting 156 6 Jam Inside (Paper jam inside the machine)6 Jam Inside If a paper jam occurs inside the machine, follow these steps: aTurn off the machines power switch and unplug the AC power cord. bPress the front cover release button and then open the front cover. cHold the green handle of the drum unit. Pull the drum unit out until it stops.
Troubleshooting 157 6 dTurn the green lock lever (1) at the left of the machine counterclockwise to the release position. Holding the green handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit and remove it from the machine. IMPORTANT • Hold the green handles of the drum unit when you carry it. DO NOT hold the sides of the drum unit. • We recommend that you place the drum unit on a clean, flat surface with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. • To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration. 1

Troubleshooting 159 6 gMatch the guide ends (2) of the drum unit to the c marks (1) on both sides of the machine, then gently slide the drum unit into the machine until it stops at the green lock lever. hTurn the green lock lever (1) clockwise to the lock position. iPush the drum unit in until it stops. jClose the front cover of the machine. Note If you turn off the machine during Jam Inside, the machine will print incomplete data from your computer. Before you turn on the machine, delete the print spool job on your computer. kPlug the machine back in, and then turn on the power switch. 1 2 1
Troubleshooting 160 6 Improving the print quality6 If you have a print quality problem, print a test page first (see Machine Info. on page 71). If the printout looks good, the problem is probably not the machine. Check the interface cable or try the machine on another computer. If the printout has a quality problem, check the following steps first. And then, if you still have a print quality problem, check the chart below and follow the recommendations. Note Using non-Brother supplies may affect the print quality, hardware performance, and machine reliability. aTo get the best print quality, we suggest using the recommended paper. Check that you use the paper that meets our specifications. (See Acceptable paper and other print media on page 2.) bCheck that the drum unit and toner cartridges are installed properly. (See Replacing the drum unit on page 102.) The color of your printouts is not what you expectedMake sure toner save mode is off in the control panel or the printer driver. Perform the calibration. (See Color Calibration on page 83.) Adjust the color by using the custom setting in the driver and by using the control panel. Colors the machine can print and colors you see on a monitor are different. The machine may not be able to reproduce the colors on your monitor. (See Color Correction on page 80.) If colors appear in the printed gray areas, make sure there is a check in the Improve Gray Color check box of the printer driver. See Improve Gray Color in Settings Dialog on page 32 (For Windows ® printer driver), Advanced options on page 45 (For Windows ® BR-Script printer driver) or Print Settings on page 54 (For Macintosh printer driver). If shaded areas look dull, remove the check from the Improve Gray Color check box of the printer driver. If a printed black graphic is too light, choose Enhance Black Printing mode in the printer driver.
