1 1 1 Using the documentation 1 Thank you for buying a Brother machine! Reading the documentation will help you make the most of your machine. Symbols and conventions used in the documentation1 The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the documentation. Accessing the Advanced User’s Guide, Software User’s Guide and Network User’s Guide 1 This Basic User’s Guide does not contain all the information about the machine such as how to use the advanced features for Fax, Copy, PhotoCapture Center™, Printer, Scanner, PC-Fax and Network. When you are ready to learn detailed information about these operations, read the Advanced User’s Guide, Software User’s Guide and Network User’s Guide that are on the Documentation CD-ROM. Viewing Documentation1 aTurn on your computer. Insert the Documentation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Note (Windows® users) If the screen does not appear automatically, go to My Computer (Computer) , double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then double-click index.html. b(Macintosh users) Double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then double-click index.html. General information1 BoldBold typeface identifies specific buttons on the machine’s control panel, or on the computer screen. Italics Italicized typeface emphasizes an important point or refers you to a related topic. Courier NewText in the Courier New font identifies messages on the LCD of the machine. WARNING WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injuries. CAUTION CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injuries. IMPORTANT IMPORTANT indicates a potentially hazardous situation which may result in property-damage-only accidents or loss of product functionality. Notes tell you how you should respond to a situation that may arise or give tips about how the operation works with other features. Electrical Hazard icons alert you to possible electrical shock.

Note • (Windows® users only) Your web browser may display a yellow bar at the top of the page that contains a security warning about Active X controls. Presto! PageManager User’s Guide (MFC-J410 and MFC-J415W only) (Macintosh) Note Presto! PageManager must be downloaded and installed before use. See Accessing Brother Support (Macintosh) on page 3 for further instructions. The complete Presto! PageManager User’s Guide can be viewed from the Help selection in the Presto! PageManager application. How to find Network setup instructions (MFC-J265W and MFC-J415W only) 1 Your machine can be connected to a wireless network. You can find basic setup instructions in the Quick Setup Guide. If your wireless access point or router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup or AOSS™, you can also follow the steps in the Quick Setup Guide. Chapter 1 4 Control panel overview1 The MFC-J220 , MFC-J265W , MFC-J410 and MFC-J415W have the same control panel keys. 1 Fax and telephone keys: Redial/Pause Redials the last 30 numbers called. It also inserts a pause when programming quick dial numbers. Tel/R This key is used to have a telephone conversation after picking up the external handset during the F/T Ring (fast double-ring). Also, when connected to a PBX, you can use this key to gain access to an outside line or to transfer a call to another extension . 2 Mode keys: FAX Lets you access Fax mode. SCAN Lets you access Scan mode. COPY Lets you access Copy mode. PHOTO CAPTURE Lets you access PhotoCapture Center™ mode. 3 Menu keys: Volume keys d c While the machine is idle, you can press these keys to adjust the ring volume. Speed Dial key Lets you store, look up, and dial numbers that are stored in the memory. d or c Press d or c to move the selected area left or right on the LCD. a or b Press a or b to scroll through the menus and options. Menu Access the main menu. Clear Press to delete characters or to go back to the previous menu level. OK Lets you confirm a selection. General information5 1 4 Start keys: Mono Start Lets you start sending faxes or making copies in monochrome. Also lets you start a scanning operation (in colour or mono depending on the scanning setting in the ControlCenter software). Colour Start Lets you start sending faxes or making copies in full colour. Also lets you start a scanning operation (in colour or mono, depending on the scanning setting in the ControlCenter software). 5 Stop/Exit Stops an operation or exits the menu. 6 LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Displays messages on the screen to help you set up and use your machine. 7 Dial Pad Use these keys to dial telephone and fax numbers and as a keyboard for entering information into the machine. The # key lets you temporarily switch the dialling mode during a telephone call from Pulse to Tone. 8On/Off You can turn the machine on and off. Press On/Off to turn the machine on. Press and hold down On/Off to turn the machine off. The LCD will show Shutting Down and will stay on for a few seconds before going off. If you have connected an external telephone or TAD, it is always available. If you turn the machine off, it will still periodically clean the print head to maintain print quality. To prolong print head life, provide the best ink cartridge economy, and maintain print quality, you should keep your machine connected to the power at all times. Chapter 1 6 LCD screen indications1 The LCD shows the current machine status when the machine is idle. 1 Wireless Status (MFC-J265W and MFC-J415W only) A four level indicator shows the current wireless signal strength if you are using a wireless connection. 2 Current Receive Mode Lets you see the current receive mode. Fax (Fax only) F/T (Fax/Tel) TAD (External TAD) Mnl (Manual) 3 Memory Status Lets you see the available memory in the machine. 4 Ink indicator Lets you see the available ink volume. The warning icon appears when there is an error or a maintenance message. For details, see Error and Maintenance messages on page 57. Basic Operations1 The following steps show how to change a setting in the machine. In this example the Mode Timer setting is changed from 2 minutes to 30 seconds. aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose Mode Timer . General information7 1 Volume settings1 Ring Volume1 You can choose a range of ring volume levels, from High to Off. While the machine is idle, press dor c to adjust the volume level. The LCD shows the current setting, and each key press will change the volume to the next level. The machine will keep the new setting until you change it. You can also change the volume through the menu, by following the instructions below: Setting the Ring Volume from the menu 1 aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose Volume. Press OK. dPress aor b to choose Ring. Press OK. ePress aor b to choose Low, Med, High or Off. Press OK. fPress Stop/Exit . Beeper Volume1 When the beeper is on, the machine will beep when you press a key, make a mistake, or after you send or receive a fax. You can choose a range of beeper volume levels, from High to Off. aPress Menu. bPress aor b to choose General Setup . Press OK. cPress aor b to choose Volume. Press OK. dPress aor b to choose Beeper.
