A forum to tackle the issue of data projector theft 
in schools has been set up by Becta, the British
Educational Communications and Technology
Agency. As the technological equipment needed 
by schools to deliver classroom teaching effectively
has increased, so too has it become more 
attractive to thieves. 
“Between January and March 2005 
in London alone there were 194*
school burglaries involving data
projectors which are particularly
desirable due to their high value.
”
The first meeting of the security forum took place
on 11 May, and brought together members of the
police, manufacturers, installation companies, the
government and LEAs, to address the problem. 
The difficulty for education is wider than a monetary
one. Damage to school property, lost teaching time
and teaching resources also provides an extra
burden on schools.

Mark Wallbank, Assistant Director, Infrastructure
said: If a concerted effort is not made to combat
this problem then there is likely to be a significant
impact on the quality of teaching in schools.
Whilst there is a need for better security and
different product offerings from manufacturers, 
we also need to make schools aware of the security
features which are currently available on their
equipment.”
Becta is committed to driving forward this agenda
and will continue to facilitate regular meetings to
resolve the issue.

remote control for XE31 series means it
will not work with any other remote
control (SANYO or otherwise.)
SANYO have incorporated the suggestions of both BECTA 
and regional LEA’s in developing one of the first projectors
specifically for the education market - with the emphasis 
clearly placed on security.
According to BECTA, theft of education equipment is a growing 
problem in schools, causing not only monetary loss but also loss 
of teaching time and teaching resources.  SANYO’s                    Projector
includes a number of enhanced security features to address this issue.  
Just some of the on-board security features include an in-built 100db alarm,
a security coded start-up which requires a PIN, a remote control unit with
unique IR codes and the                    Projector also has no external buttons
which will render the unit useless if removed without authorisation.
