    document. If misfeeding occurs frequently, clean the document

    lThe covers are open. Close them.
    lThe ink film is empty. Replace the ink film with a new one (p. 12).

    General
    Problem
    lThe power cord or telephone line cord is not connected.
    Check the connections (p. 16).
    lIf you used a splitter to connect the unit, remove the
    splitter and connect the unit to the wall jack directly. If the
    unit operates properly, check the splitter.
    lThe dialing mode setting is wrong. Change the setting of
    feature #13 (p. 57).
    lDisconnect the unit from the telephone line and connect
    the line to a known working telephone. If the working
    telephone operates properly, contact our service personnel
    to have the unit repaired. If the working telephone does
    not operate properly, contact your telephone company.
    lThe ringer volume is set to off. Adjust it (p. 24).
    lThe paper is inserted halfway. Insert it correctly (p. 15)
    and press to clear the message.
    lFAX ONLYmode is set. Tell the other party the number is
    only used for faxes.
    lChange to TELmode (p. 44) or TEL/FAX mode (p. 46).
    l If you use a distinctive ring service, turn AUTO ANSWER
    off so that the fax machine is in TELmode.
    l If you use a distinctive ring service, make sure you have
    set the same ring pattern assigned by the telephone
    company (p. 51).
    lADistinctive Ring pattern of feature #31 is set (p. 59).
    lTEL/FAX mode is set (p. 46, 47).
    lAll or part of the numbers are the same. Change the number:
    feature #12 (p. 57), #41 (p. 60) and #49 (p. 60).
    lThe HELPprinting function, copy function, and reports
    also use ink film.
    lRecording paper or ink film has run out. Press to
    stop the beeps and install paper/ink film.
    l You are probably entering 98 or 99 to retrieve your
    messages. 9 is the default setting for the fax activation
    code. If you use a voice mail service, set the fax activation
    feature to off or reprogram the activation code (feature #41
    on page 60).
    lThe handset is too far from the base unit.
    lThe handset is engaged in an outside call.

    Fax – sending
    Problem
    lThe telephone line cord is connected to the EXTjack on
    the unit. Connect to the LINE jack (p. 16).
    lThe other party’s fax machine is busy or has run out of
    recording paper. Try again.
    lThe other party’s machine is not a facsimile. Check with
    the other party.
    lThe other party’s fax machine rings too many times. Send
    the fax manually – dial the number, confirm the fax tone,
    then press .
    lIf your line has special telephone services such as call
    waiting, the service may have been activated during fax
    transmission. Connect the unit to a line that does not have
    these services.
    lThe extension telephone on the same line is off the hook.
    Hang up the extension telephone and try again.
    lTry copying the document. If the copied image is clear,
    there may be something wrong with the other party’s
    machine.
    lThe glass or rollers are dirty. Clean them (p. 74).
    lUse the overseas transmission mode of feature #23 (p. 58).
    lAdd two pauses at the end of the telephone number or
    dial manually.
    FAX/START

    Problem
    lThe telephone line cord is connected to the EXTjack on
    the unit. Connect to the LINE jack (p. 16).
    lThe receive mode is set to TELmode. Set to FAX ONLY
    mode (p. 45) or TEL/FAX mode (p. 46).
    lThe time taken to answer the call is too long. Decrease
    the number of rings: feature #06 (p. 56), #30 (p. 59) and
    #78 (p. 61).
    lThe incoming call is not a fax. Change the receive mode
    to TELmode (p. 44).
    lIf a blank sheet is ejected after the received document is
    printed out, the receiving reduction rate is not programmed
    correctly. Program the proper rate in feature #36 (p. 59).
    lThe other party placed the document in their fax machine
    the wrong way. Check with the other party.

    Fax – receiving (cont.)
    Problem
    lThe glass or rollers are dirty. Clean them (p. 74).
    lThe other party sent a faint document. Ask them to send a
    clearer copy of the document.
    lThe thermal head is dirty. Clean it (p. 75).
    lSome paper has instructions recommending which side to
    print on. Try turning the paper over.
    lYou may have used paper with a cotton and/or fiber
    content that is over 20%, such as letterhead or resume
    paper. We recommend smooth paper such as Hammermill
    Jet Print for clearer printing.
    lPress until a single beep is heard.
    lThe memory is full of received documents due to a lack of
    recording paper or a recording paper jam. Install paper 
    (p. 15) or clear the jammed paper (p. 70).

    Using an answering machine
    Problem
    lYour greeting message on the answering machine is too
    long. Shorten the message (up to 10 seconds).
    lThe answering machine rings too many times. Set to 1 or
    2 rings.
    lCheck if the answering machine is turned on and
    connected to the fax machine properly (p. 48).
    lSet the number of rings on the answering machine to 1 
    or 2.
    lThe remote access code on your answering machine is
    the same as your fax activation code. Set a different
    number for features #12 (p. 57) and #41 (p. 60).
    lYou did not program your remote access code in your fax
    machine correctly. Program the same code that is
    programmed on the answering machine to the fax
    machine with feature #12 (p. 57).
    lThe code may include “#” which is used for certain
    features provided by telephone companies. Change the
    code on the answering machine to another number which
    does not include “#”. Also change the code of the fax
    machine with feature #12 (p. 57).
    lYour answering machine has run out of recording tape.
    Rewind the tape to record messages.
    lYou set the answering machine to only give a greeting
    message.
    Cause & solution
    I cannot receive documents
    automatically.
    I cannot receive voice
    messages.
    I cannot retrieve recorded voice
    messages on the answering
    machine from a remote
    location.
    I pressed the remote access
    code to access the answering
    machine remotely, but the line
    was disconnected.

    Problem
    lYou cannot make a copy during programming. Make the
    copy after programming or stop programming.
    lThe glass or rollers are dirty. Clean them (p. 74).
    lThe thermal head is dirty. Clean it (p. 75).
    lSome paper has instructions recommending which side to
    print on. Try turning the paper over.
    lYou may have used paper with a cotton and/or fiber
    content that is over 20%, such as letterhead or resume
    paper. We recommend smooth paper such as Hammermill
    Jet Print for clearer printing.
    Cause & solution
    The unit does not make a copy.
    Ablack line, a white line or a
    dirty pattern appears on the

    If a power failure occurs!
    lThe unit will not function.
    lThe unit is not designed for making emergency telephone calls when the power fails.
    Alternative arrangements should be made for access to emergency services.
    lFax transmission and reception will be interrupted.
    lIf delayed transmission of feature #25 (p. 58) is programmed and the start time has passed
    during a power failure, transmission will be attempted soon after power is restored.
    lIf fax documents are stored in memory, they will be lost. When power is restored, a power
    down report will be printed out stating which contents in memory have been erased.

    part.
    lIf the handset is on the cradle, take it off
    before opening the cover. If the unit does not eject any recording paper during fax reception or copying, the recording
    paper has jammed and the display will show the following.
