Paper jam in Tray 1 or optional Tray 2
1Pull Tray 1 completely out of the printer or pull the optional Tray 2 completely out of its base.
2Remove the jam:

Paper jam in the small media feeder
If the jam is visible from the front and there is enough of the envelope or photo card to grasp, to remove the jam:
1Pull Tray 1 about 50.8 mm (2 inches) out of the printer.
2Grasp the envelope or photo card and pull it out.
3Reinstall Tray 1.
If the envelope or photo card cannot be grasped from the front and is barely visible, to remove the jam:
1Press the button as you grasp the handle on the duplex unit cover.
2Pull out the duplex unit cover.

Memory card cannot be inserted
These are possible solutions. Try one or more of the following:
CHECK MEMORY CARD TYPE
Make sure that the type of memory card you are using can be used in the printer.
CHECK MEMORY CARD PLACEMENT
Make sure you have inserted the memory card in the correct slot.

CHECK TO SEE IF THE MEMORY CARD CONTAINS PHOTOS
Insert a memory card that contains photos.
MAKE SURE THE USB CABLE IS CONNECTED
If the printer is connected to the computer through a USB cable:
1Check the USB cable for any obvious damage.
2Firmly plug the square end of the USB cable into the back of the printer.
3Firmly plug the rectangular end of the USB cable into the USB port of the computer.
The USB port is marked with the 
 USB symbol.

Copy troubleshooting
Copier does not respond
These are possible solutions. Try one or more of the following:
CHECK MESSAGES
See “Error messages on the computer screen” on page 256.
CHECK POWER
If the  light is not on, make sure the power cord is properly connected to the printer and to a properly grounded
electrical outlet.
Scanner unit does not close
1Lift the scanner unit.
2Remove any obstruction keeping the scanner unit open.
3Lower the scanner unit.

ADJUST THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE COPY
1Load the document facedown on the scanner glass in the upper left corner.
2From the control panel, press  or  repeatedly until Copy is highlighted.

Scan troubleshooting
Scanner does not respond
These are possible solutions. Try one or more of the following:
CHECK MESSAGES
Resolve all error messages.
CHECK POWER
If the  light is not on, make sure the printer is plugged into a properly grounded outlet. Make sure the power
cord is properly connected to the printer.
CHECK PRINTER DEFAULT AND PAUSE SETTINGS
1Do one of the following:
In Windows Vista, click  Œ Control Panel ŒPrinters (under Hardware and Sound).
In Windows XP, click Start ŒSettings...

Scanning takes too long or freezes the computer
These are possible solutions. Try one or more of the following:
CLOSE OTHER SOFTWARE
Close all programs not being used.
CHANGE THE SCANNING RESOLUTION TO A LOWER VALUE
1Load an original document facedown on the scanner glass.
2From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon.
3From the Welcome Screen, click Scan.
4Click Custom Settings.
5From the Scan Resolution drop-down list, select a lower scan resolution.
6Click Start.

CHECK THE TELEPHONE WALL JACK
1Plug a telephone into the wall jack.
2Listen for a dial tone.
3If you do not hear a dial tone, plug a different telephone into the wall jack.
4If you still do not hear a dial tone, plug a telephone into a different wall jack.
5If you hear a dial tone, connect the printer to that wall jack.
