5 Printer lights reference
The printer LEDs (or lights) indicate printer status and are useful for diagnosing printing problems. 
This chapter provides a list of LED status light combinations, what they indicate, and how to solve 
the problem.

Light pattern Light description Explanation and recommended action
No lights are on. The printer is off.
Press the   (power button). 
The Power light is on. The printer is ready.
No action is required.
The Power light blinks. The printer is turning on or off or 
processing a print job, or a print job 
has been cancelled.
No action is required.

Resume light blinks.The printer is out of paper.
Load paper and then press the   
(resume button).
The printer is in manual duplex mode. It is 
waiting for the ink to dry so the pages can 
be flipped over and reloaded.
Reload the stack into the printer and 
press the   (resume button).
The printer is pausing for the ink to dry.
Wait for the ink to dry. The Resume light 
will stop blinking.
The printer has printed a banner, 
and the banner needs to be removed 
from the printer.
Press the   (resume button) to remove 
the banner from the printer.
The rear-access panel or the optional 
auto-duplex unit is not installed. The printer 
cannot print without it installed.
Install the rear-access panel or the 
optional auto-duplex unit, and then 
press the   (resume button).
The Power light and Resume 
light blink.Print media is jammed in the printer.
Press the   (resume button) to eject the 
jammed media.
Remove all media from the output tray. 
Open the top cover to locate the jam. 
After clearing the jam, press the   
(resume button) to continue the 
print job.
The Power light blinks and the 
Resume light is on.One or more covers on the printer 
are open.
Close any open covers.
Make sure the auto-duplex unit is 
properly installed.
A printer error has occurred.
Turn the printer off and then on again.
The Power light blinks and 
the Printhead and Resume light 
are on.The printhead latch is not secured.
Open the printing supplies cover and 
secure the printhead latch.
The Printhead light, a color 
indicator light, and the Resume 
light are on.One or more of the printheads 
needs attention.
Reinstall the printheads and try to print. 
Try cleaning the printhead contacts. 
SeeCleaning the printhead contacts.
If the error persists, replace the 
printhead or printheads indicated.
The Ink Cartridge light, a color 
indicator light, and the Resume 
light are on.One or more of the ink cartridges 
needs attention.
Reinstall the ink cartridges and try 
to print. 
If the error persists, replace the ink

61 The Ink Cartridge light blinks, 
and one or more of the color 
indicator lights and the 
Resume light are on.An ink cartridge is low on ink and will need 
to be replaced soon.
Press the   (resume button) to continue 
printing.
The Ink Cartridge light, one or 
more of the color indicator 
lights, and the Resume light 
are on.An ink cartridge is out of ink and must be 
replaced before you can continue printing.
Replace the ink cartridge indicated.
The Ink Cartridge light is on 
and a color indicator light and 
the Resume light blink.A non-HP ink cartridge is installed.
CAUTION:Damage to the printer that 
results from modifying or refilling the ink 
cartridges, or from using non-HP ink 
cartridges, is not covered under the 
warranty.
If you thought that this ink cartridge was 
an HP ink cartridge, return it to the 
place where you purchased it. Buy and 
install an HP ink cartridge.
If you choose to use a non-HP ink 
cartridge, press and hold down the   
(power button) and press the   
(resume button) three times. Release the 
 (power button). All lights except the 
Power light go off. Damage that results 
to the printer from using this cartridge is 
not covered under the warranty.
The Printhead light and a color 
indicator light are on.The printer detects a faulty printhead. 
Replace the printhead indicated.
The Ink Cartridge light and a 
color indicator light are on.The printer detects a faulty ink cartridge.

indicator light blink alternately 
with an Ink Cartridge light and 
a color indicator light. 
The Resume light is on.The printer detects a faulty ink cartridge 
and a faulty printhead. 
Replace the applicable printheads and 
ink cartridges.
The Power light, Printhead 
light, Ink Cartridge light, 
and Resume light all blink.Multiple printer errors have occurred. 
Turn the printer off, and then on again.
If the printer still shows an error, turn the 
print off, and unplug it. Wait a minute 
and then turn on the printer again. If the 
printer error has cleared, send the 
job again.

Ordering printing supplies through the Toolbox
The three requirements to use this features are listed here.
The Toolbox must be installed on your computer (supported for Windows only).
The printer must be connected to your computer using a USB cable.
You must have access to the Internet.
To order printing supplies through the Toolbox
1.In the status area of the Windows taskbar (near the clock), double-click the Toolbox icon.
2.On the Printer Status tab, click Order Supplies. Your default browser opens and displays a website 
from which you can purchase printing supplies.
3.Follow the instructions on the website to select and order printing supplies.
