The [AEL]/[AFL] Button
Focus and /or exposure can also be locked using the [AEL]/[AFL]  button.
Focus and /or exposure will remain locked while the button is pr essed, regardless of
whether or not the shutter  button is pressed halfway.
The role played by the [AEL] /[AFL]  button can be sel ected using the [AE/AF-LOCK
BUTTON]  option in the setup menu:
[AE LOCK ONLY] (the default setting):  The [AEL]/[AFL] button locks exposure
only.
[AF LOCK ONLY]:  The [AEL]/[AFL] butto n locks focus only.

Autofocus
Although the camera boasts a high-precision autofocus system, it may be unable to focus on
the subjects listed below.Very shiny subjects such a s mirrors or car bodies.
Fast-moving subjects.
Subjects photographed through a  window or other reflective object.
Dark subjects and subjects that  absorb rather than reflect light, such as hair or fur.
Insubstantial subjects, such as smoke or flame.
Subjects that show little contrast with the background (for exa mple, subjects in clothing
that is the same...

Checking Focus
To zoom in on the current focus frame for precise focus, press the center of the command
dial. Press the dial again to cancel zoom.
In focus mode  [S], focus check is available when  [AREA] is selected for
[AUTOFOCUS SETTING]  > [AF MODE]  in the shooting menu.
Focus check is not available when [ON]  is selected for [AUTOFOCUS SETTING]  >
[PRE-AF]  in focus mode  [C].

To record raw, unprocessed data from the camera image sensor, select a  [RAW] option for image
quality in the shooting menu as  described below. JPEG copies of RAW images can be created using
the  [RAW CONVERSION]  option in the playback menu, or  RAW images can be viewed on a
computer using optional [RAW FILE CONVERTER] software.
