Program AE (P) Program AE (P) To allow the camera to adjust both shutter speed and aperture for opti- mal exposure, set shutter speed and aperture to A. P will appear in the display. The new values for shutter speed and aperture are shown in yellow. Program shift is not available if the attached fl ash supports TTL auto, AUTO is selected for U DYNAM- IC RANGE in the shooting menu (P 79), or the sensitivity dial is rotated to A ( P 50). S will appear in the display. R At settings other than 180X, shutter speed can also be adjusted in increments of 1 /3 EV by rotating the front command dial. Shutter speed can be adjusted even while the shutter button is pressed halfway. Q If the correct exposure can not be achieved at the selected shutter speed, aperture will be displayed in red when the shutter button is pressed halfway. Adjust shutter speed until the correct exposure is achieved.Aperture mode switch S2002000 11 12 2 3 300 Q If the subject is outside the metering range of the camera, the aperture display will show “– – –”. Sensitivity and Depth of Field Sensitivity and Depth of Field If you choose a fast shutter speed when the subject is poorly lit, the camera au- toexposure program will select a wider aperture. This will produce the correct exposure but may also reduce depth of fi eld so that less of the area behind and in front of your subject appears to be in focus (see the top illustration at right). To stop aperture down and increase depth of fi eld as shown in the second of the two illustrations at right, select a higher sensitivity.

For faster shutter speeds that reduce motion blur as shown in the second of the two illustrations at right, select a higher sensitivity.
49 More on Photography and PlaybackChoosing an Exposure Mode Manual Exposure (M) Manual Exposure (M) Exposure can be altered from the value suggested by the camera by setting both shutter speed and aperture to values other than A (if A is currently selected for shutter speed, press the dial lock release while ro- tating the shutter speed dial). M will appear in the display. R At settings other than 180X, shutter speed can also be adjusted in increments of 1 /3 EV by rotating the front command dial. 50 Sensitivity Sensitivity “Sensitivity” refers to the camera’s sensitivity to light. Sensitivity is ad- justed by pressing the dial lock release and rotating the sensitivity dial; choose from values between 200 and 6400, or select L (100), H1 (defaults to 12800), or H2 (defaults to 25600) for special situations. Higher values can be used to reduce blur when lighting is poor, while lower values al- low slower shutter speeds or wider apertures in bright light; note, how- ever, that mottling may appear in pictures taken at high sensitivities, particularly at H2, while choosing L reduces dynamic range. Values of from ISO 200 to ISO 6400 are recommended in most situations. If A (auto) is selected, the camera will adjust sensitivity automatically in response to shooting conditions. R RAW images can not be recorded at settings of L, H1, or H2. Only JPEG images will be recorded if these settings are chosen when RAW , FINE+RAW, or NORMAL+RAW is selected for image quality (P 79). R The N ISO DIAL SETTING option in the setup menu can be used to choose the sensitivity assigned to the H1 and H2 positions on the sensitivity dial (P 91). Choose from 12800, 25600, and 51200.
51 More on Photography and PlaybackSensitivity ■ A (Auto) The N ISO AUTO SETTING item in the shooting menu (P 78) controls how the camera adjusts sensitivity when A is selected. The camera auto- matically chooses a sensitivity between the default and maximum val- ues; sensitivity is only raised above the default value if the shutter speed required for optimal exposure would be slower than the value selected for MIN. SHUTTER SPEED. NN ISO AUTO SETTINGISO AUTO SETTING OptionOption Default Default DEFAULT SENSITIVITY 200200 MAX. SENSITIVITY 800800 MIN. SHUTTER SPEED 1/601/60 R If the value selected for DEFAULT SENSITIVITY is higher than that selected for MAX. SENSITIVITY, DEFAULT SENSITIVITY will be set to the value selected for MAX. SENSITIVITY. R The camera may select shutter speeds slower than MIN. SHUTTER SPEED if pictures would still be underex- posed at the value selected for MAX. SENSITIVITY.

Dou- bling either the sensitivity or the amount of light in- creases EV by one, while halving it reduces EV by one. 53 More on Photography and Playback Metering Metering To choose how the camera meters exposure, rotate the metering dial to select from the following options. ModeModeDescriptionDescription oo(MULTI)(MULTI)The camera instantly determines exposure based on an analysis of composi- tion, color, and brightness distribution. Recommended in most situations. pp(SPOT)(SPOT)The camera meters lighting conditions in an area at the center of the frame equivalent to 2% of the total. Recommended with backlit subjects and in other cases in which the background is much brighter or darker than the main sub- ject. qq(AVERAGE)(AVERAGE) Exposure is set to the average for the entire frame. Provides consistent expo- sure across multiple shots with the same lighting, and is particularly eff ective for landscapes and portraits of subjects dressed in black or white. Q The selected option will only take eff ect when Intelligent Face Detection is off (P 38).
