    4.Pull the waste toner container out  of the printer using its handle. 
    5. Pull the imaging unit out of the printer using the groove on the front of 
    the imaging unit.
    6. With a dry lint-free cloth, wipe away  any dust and spilled toner from the 
    toner cartridges area and their cavities. 7.
    Holding the groove on the front of  the imaging unit, push the imaging 
    unit in to the printer.
    8. Insert the waste toner container into position and then push it to ensure 
    that it is firmly seated in place.
    9. Slide the four toner cartri dges back into the printer.
    10. Reinstall all the compartments into the printer, and close the front cover.
    11. Plug in the power cord and turn the printer on
    • Do not touch the green surface, the imaging unit with your hands 
    or any other material.
    • Be careful not to scratch the surface of the imaging unit
    • If you leave the front cover open for more than a few minutes, the 
    imaging unit can be exposed to light. This will cause damage to 
    the imaging unit. Close the front cover if the installation needs to 
    be halted for any reason.
    • If toner gets on your clothing, wip e it off with a dry cloth and wash 
    it in cold water. Do not use hot wa ter as it sets the toner onto the 
    fabric.
    • If your printer or its surrounding is contaminated with toner, it is 
    recommend that you use a cloth or tissue dampened with water to 
    clean it. If you use a vacuum cleaner, toner blown into the air 
    might be harmful to you.
    After cleaning, let the printer to dry completely.
    If the front cover is not completely  closed, the printer will not operate.

    Cleaning the scan unit
    Keeping the scan unit clean helps ensure the best possible copies. It is 
    recommended that you clean the scan  unit at the start of each day and 
    during the day, as needed.
    1. Slightly dampen a soft lint-free cloth or paper towel with water.
    2. Open the scanner lid.
    3. Wipe the surface of the scanner glass until it is clean and dry.
    4. Wipe the underside of the scanner lid and white sheet until it is clean 
    and dry.
    5. Push the ADF sheet with any tool such as tweezers carefully.
    6. Hold the edge of the ADF sheet, and wipe both sides of the ADF sheet 
    until it is clean and dry. 7.
    Push the ADF sheet back in to the printer smoothly.
    8. Close the scanner lid.

    MAINTAINING THE CARTRIDGE
    Toner cartridge storage
    To get the most from the toner cartridge, keep the following guidelines in 
    mind:
    • Do not remove the toner cartridge from its package until it is ready for 
    use. 
    • Do not refill the toner cartridge. The printer warranty does not cover  damage caused by using a refilled cartridge.
    • Store toner cartridges in the same environment as your printer.
    Expected cartridge life
    The life of the toner cartridge yield dep ends on the amount of toner that print 
    jobs require. The actual number ma y also be different depending on the 
    print density of the pages you print  on, and the number of pages may be 
    affected by operating environment, printing interval, media type, and media 
    size. If you print a lot of graphics, you may need to change the cartridge 
    more often.
    Redistributing toner
    When a toner is low, faded or light  areas may appear. It is possible that 
    colored images may be printed with incorrect colors due to flawed mixing of 
    toner colors when one of the colored toner cartridges is low on toner. You 
    can temporarily improve print quality by redistributing the toner.
    • The toner-related message saying that the toner is low may appear on  the display.
    1. Using the handle, completely open the front cover.
    2. Grasp the handles on the toner cartridge and pull to remove the four 
    cartridges from the printer. 3.
    Holding both handles on the toner cartri dge, thoroughly rock it from side 
    to side to evenly distribute the toner. 
    4. Slide the four toner cartri dges back into the printer.
    5. Close the front cover. Ensure that  the cover is securely latched.
    REPLACING THE TONER CARTRIDGE
    The printer uses four colors and has  a different toner cartridge for each one: 
    yellow (Y), magenta (M),  cyan (C), and black (K).
    • The status LED and the toner-relate d message on the display indicates 
    which toner cartridge should be replaced.
    • Incoming faxes are saved in memory.
    Also, the Dell Toner Management System™ program window appears on
    the computer indicating you to replace the cartridge.
    At this stage, the toner cartridge needs to be replaced. Check the type of 
    toner cartridge for your printer. (See Ordering supplies on page 71.)
    1. Turn the printer off, then wait a fe w minutes for the printer to cool.
    2. Using the handle, completely open the front cover.
    If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry
    cloth and wash it in cold water. Do not use hot water as it sets the 
    toner onto the fabric.
    If the front cover is not completely closed, the printer will not

    cartridge from the printer.
    4. Take a new toner cartridge out of its package.
    5. Holding both handles on the toner cartridge, thoroughly rock it from side

    6.Place the toner cartridge on a flat  surface, as shown, and remove the 
    protecting cover. 7.
    Ensure that the color of the toner cartridge matches the color slot and 
    then grasp the handles on the toner cart ridge. Insert the cartridge until it 
    clicks into place.
    8. Close the front cover. Ensure the cover is securely latched, and then 
    turn the printer on.
    • Do not use sharp objects, such as a knife or scissors, to open 
    the toner cartridge package. Yo u could damage the surface of 
    the toner cartridge.

    REPLACING THE IMAGING UNIT
    When the life span of the imaging unit has expired, the Dell Toner
    Management System™ program window appears on the computer, 
    indicating the imaging unit needs to be re placed. If the imaging unit is not 
    replaced, your prin ter fails to print.
    1. Turn the printer off, then wait a fe w minutes for the printer to cool.
    2. Using the handle, completely open the front cover.
    3. Grasp the handles on the toner cartridge and pull to remove the four 
    cartridges from the printer.
    4. Pull the waste toner container out  of the printer using its handle. 5.
    Pull the imaging unit out of the printer  using the groove on the front of 
    the imaging unit.  
    6. Take a new imaging unit out of its package. Remove the protective 
    devices on both sides of the imaging unit and the paper protecting the 
    surface of the imaging unit. 
       
    7.Holding the groove on the front of  the imaging unit, push imaging unit 
    into the printer.
     
    • Do not use sharp objects, such as a knife or scissors, to open the  imaging unit package. You coul d damage the surface of the 
    imaging unit.
    • Be careful not to scratch the  surface of the imaging unit.
    • To prevent damage, do not expos e the imaging unit to light for 
    more than a few minutes. Cover it  with a piece of paper to protect 
    it if necessary.

    8.Insert the waste toner container into position and then push it to ensure 
    that it is firmly seated in place.
    9. Slide the four toner cartridges back into the printer.
    10. Close the front cover firmly. 
    11. Turn the printer on.REPLACING THE WASTE TONER CONTAINER
    When the life span of the waste toner container has expired, the Dell Toner 
    Management System™ program window appears on the computer, 
    indicating the waste toner container needs to be replaced.  If the waste toner 
    container is not replaced, your printer fails to print.
    1. Turn the printer off, then wait a fe w minutes for the printer to cool.
    2. Using the handle, completely open the front cover.
    3. Pull the waste toner container out of the printer using its handle.
    4. Remove the container’s cap from  the container as shown below, and 
    use it to close the waste toner container opening.
    5. Take a new waste toner container out of its package.
    If the front cover is not completely  closed, the printer will not operate. 
    Please ensure all toner cartridges are installed properly. If any toner 
    cartridge is installed improperly, the front cover does not close.
    It may takes few minutes for  your printer to get ready.
    Ensure that you lay the waste toner container on  a flat surface so that 
    the toner does not spill.
    Do not tilt or turn over the container.

    6.Insert the new container into position  and then push it to ensure that it is 
    firmly seated in place.
    7. Close the front cover firmly.
    8. Turn the printer on.
    MAINTENANCE PARTS
    To avoid print quality and paper feed problems resulting from worn parts, 
    and to maintain your printer in top working condition, the following items will 
    need to be replaced after the specifi ed number of pages, or when the life 
    span of each item has expired. 
     
    It is highly recommended that this maintenance be performed by an 
    authorized service provider, dealer, or  the retailer where you purchased the 
    printer. The warranty does not cover the replacement of the maintenance 
    parts after their lifespan.
    Checking replaceables
    If you experience frequent paper jams or printing problems, check the 
    number of pages the printer has  printed or scanned. Replace the 
    corresponding parts, if necessary.
    1. Press  Menu until System Setup appears on the bottom line of the 
    display and press  OK.
    2. Press the left/right arrow until  Maintenance appears and press  OK.
    3. Press the left/right arrow until  Supplies Life appears and press  OK.
    4. Press the left/right arrow until t he item you want appears and press  OK.
    • Supplies Info: Prints the supply information page.
    •Total: Displays the total number of pages printed. • ADF Scan:
    Displays the number of pages scanned using the ADF.
    • Platen Scan: Displays the number of pages scanned using the 
    scanner glass.
    • Imaging Unit, Transfer Belt, Fuser, TransferRoller, Tray1  Roller:   displays the number of pages printed each item.
    5. If you selected to print a supply information page, press  OK to confirm.
    6. Press  Stop/Clear  to return to ready mode.
    MANAGING YOUR PR INTER FROM THE 
    WEBSITE
    If you have connected your printer to a network and set up TCP/IP network 
    parameters correctly, you can manage the printer via Dell’s  Embedded 
    Web Service , an embedded web server. Use  Embedded Web Service to:
    • View the printer’s device information and check its current status.
    • Change TCP/IP parameters and set up other network parameters.
    • Change the printer properties.
    • Set the printer to send email notifications to let you know the printer’s 
    status.
    • Get support for using the printer.
    To access Embedded Web Service:
    1. Start a web browser, such as In ternet Explorer, from Windows.
    2. Enter the printer’s IP address (http ://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) in the address field 
    and press the  Enter key or click  Go.
    Your printer’s embedded website opens.
    CHECKING THE PRINTER’S SERIAL NUMBER
    When you call for service or register  as a user on the Dell website, the 
    printer’s serial number may be required.
    You can identify the serial number by taking the following steps:
    1. Press  Menu until System Setup appears on the bottom line of the 
    display and press  OK.
    2. Press the left/right arrow until  Maintenance appears and press  OK.
    3. Press the left/right arrow until  Serial Number appears and press  OK.
    4. Your printers serial number appears.
    5. Press  Stop/Clear  to return to ready mode.
    If the front cover is not completely closed, the printer will not operate.

    The battery inside the printer is a service component. Do not change 
    it by yourself.
    There is a risk of explosion if battery is replaced by an incorrect type.

    TIPS FOR AVOIDING PAPER JAMS
    By selecting the correct media type
    s, most paper jams can be avoided. 
    When a paper jam occurs, follow the steps outlined on page 58. 
    • Follow the procedures on page 28. En sure that the adjustable guides 
    are positioned correctly.
    • Do not overload the tray. Ensure that  the paper level is below the paper 
    capacity mark on the inside of the tray.
    • Do not remove paper from the tray while your printer is printing.
    • Flex, fan, and straight en paper before loading. 
    • Do not use creased, damp,  or highly curled paper.
    • Do not mix paper types in a tray.
    • Use only recommended print media. (See Setting the paper size and 
    type on page 29.)
    • Ensure that the recommended side of the print media is facing up in the 
    tray and manual feeder.
    CLEARING DOCUMENT JAMS
    When an original jams while passing through the ADF,  [Document Jam] 
    appears on the display.
    1. Remove any remaining pages from the ADF.
    2. Open the ADF cover. 3.
    Pull the jammed paper gently out of the ADF.
    4. Close the ADF cover. Then load the removed page(s), if any, back into 
    the ADF.
    Exit misfeed
    1.Remove any remaining pages from the ADF.
    2. Seize the misfeed paper, and remove the paper from the document 
    output tray by carefully pulling it  to the right using both hands.
    3. Load the removed pages back into the ADF.

    To prevent document jams, use the scanner glass for thick, thin, or 
    mixed paper-type originals.

    Roller misfeed
    1.Open the scanner lid.
    2. Seize the misfeed paper, and remove the paper from the feed area by 
    carefully pulling it to the right using both hands.
    3. Close the scanner lid. Then load the removed pages back into the ADF.
    CLEARING PAPER JAMS
    When a paper jam occurs, the warning message appears on the display 
    screen. Refer to the table below to locate and clear the paper jam.
    In the tray 1
    1. Open and close the front cover.  The jammed paper is automatically 
    ejected from the printer.
    If the paper does not exit, go to the next step.
    2. Pull the tray 1 out of the printer.
     
    3.Remove the jammed paper by gently pulling it straight out. 
    If the paper does not move when you pu ll, or if you do not see the paper 
    in this area, check the paper exit  area. See In the paper exit area on 
    page 60.
    4. Insert the tray 1 into the printer until it snaps into place. Printing 
    automatically resumes.
    In the fuser unit area
    If paper is jammed in the fuser unit  area, perform the following steps to 
    release the jammed paper.
    1. Open the scan unit.

    Some messages may not appear in the display depending on options 
    or models. 
    To avoid tearing the paper, pull 
    the jammed paper out gently and 
    slowly. Follow the instructions in the following sections to clear the 
    jam.

    2.Open the inner cover. 
    3.Carefully take the jammed paper out of the printer.
    4. Close the inner cover.
    5. Lower down the scan unit gently and slowly until it is completely closed. 
    Ensure that it is securely latched.
    Be careful not to pinch your fingers!
    In the paper exit area
    1. Open and close the front cover.  The jammed paper is automatically 
    ejected from the printer.
    2. Gently pull the paper out of the output tray.
    If you do not see the jammed paper or  if there is any resistance when 
    you pull, stop and go to the next step.
    3. Open the rear cover.
    4. If you see the jammed paper, pull it straight up. Skip to step 8.
    If you still do not see the paper, go to the next step.
    5. Pull up the fuser lever.
    Do not touch the fuser inside the inner cover. It is hot and could 
    cause burns! The fusers operating temperature is 180°C (356°F). 
    Take care when removing paper from the printer.
    If the scan unit is not completely closed, the printer will not 
    operate.
