    Troubleshooting
This \fhapter provides solutions to problems that \fan o\f\fur during the installation and operation o\b the D-Link GO-RT-N150.
Read the \bollowing des\friptions i\b you are having problems. (The examples below are illustrated in Windows
    ® XP. I\b you have a
different operating system, the s\freen shots on your \fomputer will look similar \lto the \bollowing examples.)
    1. Why can’t I access the web-based configuration utility?
When entering the IP address o\b the D-Link router (192.168.0.1 \bor example), you are not \fonne\fting to a website on the Internet
and there\bore do not require an Internet \fonne\ftion to do so. The devi\fe has the utility built-in to a ROM \fhip in the devi\fe
itsel\b. Your \fomputer must be on the s\lame IP subnet to \fonne\ft to the web-based utility.
    • Make sure you have an updated Java-enabled web browser. We re\fommend the \bollowing:
    • Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
    • Nets\fape 8 or hig\lher
    • Mozilla 1.7.12 (5.0) \lor higher
    • Opera 8.5 or higher
    • Sa\bari 1.2 or higher (w\lith Java 1.3.1 or higher)\l
    • Camino 0.8.4 or high\ler
    • Fire\box 1.5 or higher
    • Veri\by physi\fal \fonne\ftivity by \fhe\fking \bor solid link lights on the devi\fe. I\b you do not get a solid link light, try using a different \fable or \fonne\ft to a different port on the devi\fe i\b available. I\b the \fomputer is turned off, the link light may also be turned off.
    • Disable any Internet se\furity so\btware running on the \fomputer. So\btware firewalls su\fh as ZoneAlarm, Bla\fkICE, Sygate, Norton Personal Firewall, and Windows
® XP firewall may blo\fk a\f\fess to the \fonfiguration pages. Che\fk the help files in\fluded
    with your firewall so\btware \bor more in\bormation on disabling o\lr \fonfiguring it.

    • Configure your Internet settings:
    • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double-\fli\fk the Internet Options I\fon. From the Security tab, \fli\fk
the button to restore the settings to their de\baults.
    • Cli\fk the Connection tab and set the dial-up option to Never Dial a Conne\ftion. Cli\fk the LAN Settings button.
Make sure nothing is \fhe\fke\ld. Cli\fk OK.
    • Go to the Ad\banced tab and \fli\fk the b\lutton to restore these settings t\lo their de\baults. Cli\fk OK three times.
    • Close your web browser (i\b open) and o\lpen it.
    • A\f\fess the web management. Open your web browser and enter the IP address o\b your D-Link router in the address bar. This should open the login page \bor your the web management.
    • I\b you still \fannot a\f\fess the \fonfiguration, unplug the power to the router \bor 10 se\fonds and plug ba\fk in. Wait about 30 se\fonds and try a\f\fessing the \fonfiguration. I\b you have multiple \fomputers, try \fonne\fting using a different \fomputer.
    2. What can I do if I forgot my password?
I\b you \borgot your password, you must reset your router. Un\bortunately this pro\fess will \fhange all your settings ba\fk to the
    \ba\ftory de\baults.
To reset the router, lo\fate the reset button (hole) on the rear panel o\b the unit. With the router powered on, use a paper\flip
to hold the button down \bor 10 se\fonds. Release the button and the router will go through its reboot pro\fess. Wait about 30
se\fonds to a\f\fess the router. The de\bault IP address is 192.168.0.1. When logging in, the username is admin and leave the
    password box empty.

    3. Why can’t I connect to certain sites or send and recei\be e-mails when connecting through my router?
I\b you are having a problem sending or re\feiving e-mail, or \fonne\fting to se\fure sites su\fh as eBay, banking sites, and Hotmail,
    we suggest lowering the MTU in in\frements o\b ten (e.g. 1492, 1482, 1472\l, et\f).
    Note: AOL DSL+ users must us\re \fTU of 1400.
To find the proper MTU Size, you’ll have to do a spe\fial ping o\b the destination you’re trying to go to. A destination \fould be
    another \fomputer, or a URL.
    • Cli\fk on Start and then \fli\fk Run.
    • Windows
® 95, 98, and Me users type in command (Windows® NT, 2000, and XP users type in cmd) and press
    Enter (or \fli\fk OK).
    • On\fe the window opens, you’ll need to do a spe\fial ping. Use the \bollowing syntax:
      ping [url] [-f ] [-l] [\fTU \balue]
    Example: ping yahoo.com -f -l 1472

You should start at 1472 and work your way down by 10 ea\fh time. On\fe you get a reply, go up by 2 until you get a \bragmented
pa\fket. Take that value and add 28 to the value to a\f\fount \bor the various TCP/IP headers. For example, lets say that 1452 was the
proper value, the a\ftual MTU size would be 1480, whi\fh is the optimum \bor the network we’re working with (1452+28=1480).
On\fe you find your MTU, you \fan now \fonfigure your router with the proper MTU size.
To \fhange the MTU rate on your router \bollow the steps below:
    • Open your browser, enter the IP address o\b your router (192.168.0.1) a\lnd \fli\fk OK.
    • Enter your username (admin) and password (blank by de\bault). Cli\fk OK to enter the web \fonfiguration page
    \bor the devi\fe.
    • Cli\fk on Setup and then \fli\fk \fanual Configure.
    • To \fhange the MTU enter the number in th\le MTU field and \fli\fk Sa\be Settings to save your settings.
    • Test your e-mail. I\b \fhanging the MTU does not resolve the problem, \fontinue \fhanging the MTU in in\frements
    o\b ten.

    Appendix A - Wireless Basics
D-Link wireless produ\fts are based on industry standards to provide easy-to-use and \fompatible high-speed wireless
\fonne\ftivity within your home, business or publi\f a\f\fess wireless networks. Stri\ftly adhering to the IEEE standard, the D-Link
wireless \bamily o\b produ\fts will allow you to se\furely a\f\fess the data you want, when and where you want it. You will be able
to enjoy the \breedom that wireless networking delivers.
A wireless lo\fal area network (WLAN) is a \fellular \fomputer network that transmits and re\feives data with radio signals instead o\b
wires. Wireless LANs are used in\freasingly in both home and offi\fe environments, and publi\f areas su\fh as airports, \foffee shops
and universities. Innovative ways to utilize WLAN te\fhnology are helping people to work and \fommuni\fate more effi\fiently.
    In\freased mobility and the absen\fe o\b \fabling and oth\ler fixed in\brastru\fture have proven to be benefi\fial \bor many users.
Wireless users \fan use the same appli\fations they use on a wired network. Wireless adapter \fards used on laptop and desktop
systems support the same proto\fols as Ethernet adapter \fards.
Under many \fir\fumstan\fes, it may be desirable \bor mobile network devi\fes to link to a \fonventional Ethernet LAN in order to
use servers, printers or an Internet \fonne\ftion supplied through the wired LAN. A Wireless Router is a devi\fe used to provide
    this link.
    What is Wireless?
Wireless or Wi-Fi te\fhnology is another way o\b \fonne\fting your \fomputer to the network without using wires. Wi-Fi
uses radio \brequen\fy to \fonne\ft wirelessly, so you have the \breedom to \fonne\ft \fomputers anywhere in your home
    or offi\fe network.

    Why D-Link Wireless?

D-Link is the worldwide leader and award winning designer, developer, and manu\ba\fturer o\b networking produ\fts.
D-Link delivers the per\borman\fe you need at a pri\fe you \fan afford. D-Link has all the produ\fts you need to build
    your network.
    How does wireless work?
Wireless works similarly to how \fordless phones work; through radio signals transmitting data \brom point A to point B.
However, wireless te\fhnology has restri\ftions as to how you \fan a\f\fess the network. You must be within the wireless
network range area to be able to \fonne\ft your \fomputer. There are two different types o\b wireless networks: Wireless
Lo\fal Area Network (WLAN), and Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN).
Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) In a wireless lo\fal area network, a devi\fe \falled an a\f\fess point (AP) \fonne\fts \fomputers to the network. The a\f\fess
point has a small antenna atta\fhed to it, whi\fh allows it to transmit data ba\fk and \borth over radio signals. With an
indoor a\f\fess point, the signal \fan travel up to 300 \beet. With an outdoor a\f\fess point the signal \fan rea\fh out up to
    30 miles to serve pla\fes like manu\ba\fturing plants, industrial lo\fations, \follege and high s\fhool \fampuses, airports,
gol\b \fourses, and many other outdoor venues.
Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) Bluetooth is the industry standard wireless te\fhnology used \bor WPAN. Bluetooth devi\fes in WPAN operate with a
    range o\b up to 30 \beet.
The speed and wireless operation range o\b Bluetooth are both less than those o\b WLAN, but in return it doesn’t use
nearly as mu\fh power whi\fh makes it ideal \bor personal devi\fes su\fh as mobile phones, PDAs, headphones, laptops,
speakers, and other devi\fes that operate on batteries.

    Who uses wireless?

Wireless te\fhnology has be\fome so popular in re\fent years that almost everyone is using it, whether it’s \bor home,
offi\fe, or business, D-Link has a wireless solution \bor it.
Home• Gives everyone at home broadband a\f\fess
    • Sur\b the web, \fhe\fk e-mail, send instant messages, et\f.
    • Eliminates the need \bor \fables around the house
    • Simple and easy to use

Small Office and Home Office • Stay on top o\b everything at home as you would in the offi\fe
    • Remotely a\f\fess your offi\fe network \brom home
    • Share Internet \fonne\ftion and printer with multiple \fomputers
    • No need to dedi\fate offi\fe spa\fe

    Where is wireless used?
Wireless te\fhnology is expanding everywhere not just at home or in the offi\fe. People like the \breedom o\b mobility
and its popularity means that more and more publi\f \ba\filities now provide wireless a\f\fess to attra\ft people. The
wireless \fonne\ftion points in publi\f pla\fes are usually \falled “hotspots”.
Using a D-Link USB Adapter with your laptop, you \fan a\f\fess the hotspot to \fonne\ft to Internet \brom remote lo\fations
su\fh as airports, hotels, \foffee shops, libraries, restaurants, and \fonvention \fenters.
Wireless network is easy to setup, but i\b you’re installing it \bor the first time it \fould be quite a task not knowing
where to start. That’s why we’ve put together a \bew setup steps and tips to help you through the pro\fess o\b setting
    up a wireless network.

    Tips
Here are a \bew things to keep in mind, when you install a wireless network.
Centralize Your Router or Access Point
Make sure you pla\fe the router/a\f\fess point in a \fentralized lo\fation within your network \bor the best per\borman\fe.
Try to pla\fe the router/a\f\fess point as high as possible in the room so the signal gets dispersed throughout your
home. I\b you have a two-story home, you may need a repeater to boost the signal and extend the range.
    Eliminate Interference
       Pla\fe home applian\fes su\fh as \fordless telephones, mi\frowaves, and televisions as \bar away as possible \brom the
router/a\f\fess point. This will signifi\fantly redu\fe any inter\beren\fe that applian\fes operating on the same \brequen\fy
    might \fause.
    Security
Don’t let your next-door neighbors or i\lntruders \fonne\ft to your wireless network. Se\fure your wireless network by
turning on the WPA or WEP se\furity \beature on the router. Re\ber to the produ\ft manual \bor detailed in\bormation on
    how to set it up.

    There are two basi\f modes o\b net\lworking:
    • Infrastructure – All wireless \flients will \fonne\ft to an a\f\fess point or wireless router.
    • Ad-Hoc – Dire\ftly \fonne\fting to another \fomputer \bor peer-to-peer \fommuni\fation, using wireless network
adapters on ea\fh \fomputer su\fh as two or more DWM-140 wireless network USB adapters.
An In\brastru\fture network \fontains an a\f\fess point or wireless router. All the wireless devi\fes, or \flients, will \fonne\ft to the
    wireless router or a\f\fess point.
An ad-ho\f network \fontains only \flients, su\fh as laptops with wireless \fardbus adapters. All the adapters must be in Ad-Ho\f
    mode to \fommuni\fate.

    Check your IP address
A\bter you install your adapter, by de\bault, the TCP/IP settings should be set to obtain an IP address \brom a DHCP server (i.e.
wireless router) automati\fally. To veri\by your IP address, please \bollow the steps below.
Cli\fk on Start > Run. In the run box type cmd and \fli\fk OK. (Windows Vista
® users type in the Start Search box.)
At the prompt, type ipconfig and press Enter.
This will display the IP address, subnet mask, and the
    de\bault gateway o\b your adapter.
I\b the address is 0.0.0.0, \fhe\fk your adapter installation,
se\furity settings, and the settings on your router.
Some firewall so\btware programs may blo\fk a DHCP
    request on newly ins\ltalled adapters.
