127 Routine Maintenance 4Load only this sheet of paper in the Rear Tray with the open side facing UP. 5Perform bottom plate cleaning. (1) Press the Menu button. (2) Use the [ or ] button to select Maintenance/settings , then press the OK button. The Maintenance/settings screen is displayed. (3) Use the [ or ] button to select Maintenance, then press the OK button. The Maintenance screen is displayed. (4) Use the { or } button to select Bottom plate cleaning , then press the OK button. The confirmation sc reen is displayed. (5) Use the { or } button to select Ye s, then press the OK button. The paper cleans the inside of the machine as it feeds through the machine. Check the folded part of the ejected paper. If it is smudged with ink, perform Bottom Plate Cleaning again. If the problem is not resolved after performing Bottom Plate Cleaning twice, the protrusions inside the machine may be stained. Clean them according to instructions. See “Cleaning the Protrusions Inside the Machine” on page 130. Note When performing Bottom Plate Cleaning again, make sure to use a new piece of paper. (A) (A) Load the paper after unfolding it.
128Routine Maintenance „Cleaning the Inside of the Machine (Sheet Cleaning) When the message shown below is displayed, the inside of the machine should be cleaned with a cleaning sheet as soon as possible. zInstalling and Using the Cleaning Sheets The machine comes with five cleaning sheets. These cleaning sheets can be stored in the Cleaning Sheet Holder on the back side of the Document Cover. 1Open the Document Cover and remove the Cleaning Sheet Holder. 2Install or use cleaning sheets. (1)Install or use cleaning sheets. Caution You do not need to clean the inside of the machine until this message is displayed. Note You can continue to print even after the message informing you that cleaning is necessary is displayed. However, if the inside of the machine is not cleaned, printed surfaces may be smudged or print quality reduced. We recommend that you clean the inside of the machine as soon as possible. Note When you have run out of cleaning sheets, contact your Canon service representative. Note zThe machine comes with five cleaning sheets. zReturn unused cleaning sheets to the package they came in and seal the package.
129 Routine Maintenance (2) Reattach the Cleaning Sheet Holder. zCleaning the Inside of the Machine with a Cleaning Sheet 1Make sure that the machine is turned on, and then remove any paper from the Rear Tray. 2Prepare a cleaning sheet. Take out a cleaning sheet. For details on taking out cleaning sheets, see “Installing and Using the Cleaning Sheets” on page 128. 3Open the Paper Output Tray, and then open the Output Tray Extension. (1) Press the Open button to open the Paper Output Tray. (2) Open the Output Tray Extension. 4Peel off the protective tape from the cleaning sheet and load the cleaning sheet into the Rear Tray with the adhesive area on top and facing DOWN. (A) Load the cleaning sheet with the notch at the top. (B) Peel off the protective tape. Important z Sheet cleaning requires a specified cleaning sheet fed from the Rear Tray. z Do not perform any other operation while the sheet cleaning is being performed. (B) (A)

The sheet cleans the inside of the machine as it feeds through the machine. „Cleaning the Protrusions Inside the Machine If protrusions inside the machine are stained, wipe off any ink from the protrusions using a cotton swab or the like. Important Discard used cleaning sheets as soon as sheet cleaning is done. Handle the sheets carefully to avoid staining clothing or the surrounding area since the ejected sheet is stained. Caution zBe sure to turn off the power and unplug the power cord before cleaning the machine. zThe power cannot be turned off while the machine is sending or receiving a fax, or when there are unsent faxes stored in the machine’s memory. zThe machine cannot receive faxes when the power is turned off. zIf you unplug the power cord, all the documents stored in memory are deleted. Send or print necessary documents before unplugging the power cord.

132Troubleshooting If an Error Occurs When the Machine Is Connected to a Computer When an error occurs in printing such as the machine is out of paper or paper is jammed, a troubleshooting message is displayed automatically. Take the appropriate action described in the message. The message may vary depending on the version of your operating system.
133 Troubleshooting An Error Message Is Displayed on the LCD If an error message is displayed on the LCD, take the corresponding action described below. MessageAction “The ink may have run out. You are recommended to stop printing, then replace the ink tank.” (when printing is in progress) / “The ink may have run out. Replacing the ink tank is recommended.” (when printing is not in progress) U044 Ink may have run out (The lamp on the ink tank flashes). If printing is in progress, you are recommended to press the machine’s Stop/ Reset button to stop printing, replace the ink tank, and then print again. If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press the machine’s OK button. Then printing can continue. Replacing the ink tank is recommended after the printing. The machine may be damaged if printing is continued under the ink out condition. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 103. Notez If multiple ink lamps are flashing red, see “Getting the Color or Black Ink Status Information” on page 103 and check the status of each ink tank. z Since printing in this condition may cause the contents of the fax to be lost, the machine stores received faxes in memory without printing until the ink tank is replaced. Print the fax stored in memory manually after replacing the ink tank. You can set the machine to print received faxes forcibly without storing them in memory, but a part of contents or all contents of the fax may not be printed. “The clear ink tank is empty. Replacing the ink tank is recommended.” U045 The clear ink tank is empty. You are recommended to replace the clear ink tank with a new one. If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press the machine’s OK button. Then printing can continue. Replacing the clear ink tank is recommended after the printing. If the clear ink runs out, you will not be able to print on plain paper. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 103. “Print head is not installed. Install the print head.” U051 “The type of print head is incorrect. Install the correct print head.” U052 Follow the directions given in your setup sheet to install the Print Head. If the Print Head is already installed, remove the Print Head once and then reinstall it. If the error is not resolved, the Print Head may be damaged. Contact your Canon service representative. “Some ink tanks are not installed in place.” U072 “More than one ink tank of the following color is installed.” U071 Possible causes are as follows: z Some ink tanks are not installed in the correct position. (The lamp on the ink tank flashes.) z More than one ink tanks of the same color are installed. (The lamp on the ink tank flashes.) Confirm that the ink tanks are installed in the appropriate positions. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 103. “The following ink tank cannot be recognized.” U043 U140 U150 z The ink tank is not installed. Install the ink tank. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 103. z The ink tank is not compatible with this machine. (The lamp on the ink tank is off.) Install an appropriate ink tank. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 103. z An Ink tank error has occurred. (The lamp on the ink tank is off.) Replace the ink tank. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 103.
134Troubleshooting “The clear Ink has run out. Replace the ink tank.” U165/U166 The clear ink has run out. Replace the clear ink tank with a new one. If you do not replace the clear ink tank, press the machine’s Stop/Reset button to clear the error. Print job will be canceled. Print quality will deteriorate considerably and the feeder behind the cassette may be damaged if printing on plain paper is continued under the clear ink out condition. For this reason, you cannot print on plain paper until the clear ink tank is replaced with a new one. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 103. NoteUntil the clear ink tank is replaced, the machine will not be able to print the received fax and will store it in its memory. The fax stored in memory needs to be printed manually. ImportantIf you accidentally unplug the power cord and the power is turned off when the clear ink has run out, the error may not be cleared even after pressing the Stop/ Reset button. Replace the ink tank with a new one. “The ink has run out. Stop printing, then replace the ink tank.” (when printing is in progress) / “The ink has run out. Replace the ink tank.” (when printing is not in progress) U171 Ink has run out. (The lamp on the ink tank flashes.) If printing is in progress, press the machine’s Stop/Reset button to stop printing, replace the ink tank, and then print again. Printing under the current condition may damage the machine. To continue printing, you need to release the function for detecting the remaining ink level. Press and hold the machine’s Stop/Reset button for at least 5 seconds, and then release it. This operation releases the function for detecting the remaining level of the above ink, and releasing the function is memorized. Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any malfunction or trouble caused by continuation of printing under the ink out condition. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 103. Notez If the function for detecting the remaining ink level is disabled, the ink tank in gray is displayed on the LCD when checking the current ink level. See “Getting the Color or Black Ink Status Information” on page 103. z Since printing in this condition may cause the contents of the fax to be lost, the machine stores received faxes in memory without printing until the ink tank is replaced. Print the fax stored in memory manually after replacing the ink tank. You can set the machine to print received faxes forcibly without storing them in memory, but a part of contents or all contents of the fax may not be printed. “Printer detected ink out condition. Stop printing, then replace the ink tank.” (when printing is in progress) / “Printer detected ink out condition of the following ink. Replace the ink tank.” (when printing is not in progress) U172 Machine detected ink out condition (The lamp on the ink tank flashes). If printing is in progress, press the machine’s Stop/Reset button to stop printing, replace the ink tank, and then print again. To avoid printing troubles such as the mixing of inks, this machine is designed to display an error message and stop printing when the remaining ink level in an ink tank goes under the amount of ink required to maintain both machine and print quality. Replace the ink tank.” (when printing is not in progress) U181 Machine detected ink out condition (The lamp on the ink tank flashes). Stop printing, replace the ink tank, and then print again. An ink tank that was once empty is installed. Printing under the ink out condition may damage the machine. If you want to continue printing, you need to release the function for detecting the remaining ink level. Be sure to replace the empty ink tank before resuming printing. An ink tank that was once empty is installed. Printing under the ink out condition may cause the printing trouble such as the mixing of inks, or a printer malfunction. If you want to continue printing, you need to release the function for detecting the remaining ink level. To release this function, press and hold the machine’s Stop/Reset button for at least 5 seconds, and then release it.* * With this operation, releasing the function for detecting the remaining ink level is memorized. Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any malfunction or trouble which may be caused by continuation of printing or refilling of ink. See “Replacing an Ink Tank” on page 103. You can set the machine to print received faxes forcibly without storing them in memory, but a part of contents or all contents of the fax may not be printed. “There is no photo data.” zThere are no image data saved on the memory card that can be read by this machine. z The machine may not recognize the file if the file name or the folder path contains certain characters. Use only alphanumeric characters. z Photo data edited or processed on a computer must be printed from the computer. “The card is currently write-enabled. Remove card and set to read-only mode before performing operation.” The Card Slot is set to write-enabled ( USB enabled or LAN enabled ). You cannot print when the Card Slot is set to USB enabled or LAN enabled . After writing on the memory card, set to Read-only mode again. MessageAction
136Troubleshooting “The ink absorber is almost full. Press OK to continue printing. Contact the service center.” The machine has a built-in ink absorber to hold the ink used during Print Head Cleaning, for example. This error message indicates that the ink absorber is nearly full. Press the OK button to cancel the error so you can continue printing. However, because printing is disabled once the ink absorber becomes completely full and until the ink absorber is replaced, you are recommended to contact your Canon service representative as early as possible. (You will need to replace a particular part of the machine.) “Auto head align has failed. Press OK and repeat operation. ” Possible causes are as follows: z Print Head nozzles are clogged. Press the OK button to dismiss the error message, and print the nozzle check pattern to check the status of the Print Head. See “Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern” on page 114 and “Printing Does Not Start/Printing Is Blurred/ Colors Are Wrong/Straight Lines Are Misaligned” on page 143. z Plain paper of size other than A4 or Letter is loaded in the Cassette. Press the OK button on the machine to dismiss the error message, then load four sheets of A4/Letter-sized plain paper in the Cassette. Automatic Print Head Alignment can only be performed using paper from the Cassette. For Automatic Print Head Alignment, always load paper in the Cassette. z The Paper Output Slot is exposed to strong light. Press the OK button to dismiss the error message, and then adjust your operating environment and/or the position of the machine so that the Paper Output Slot is not exposed directly to strong light. After carrying out the above measures, if the problem continues after aligning the Print Head again, press the OK button to dismiss the error message, and then perform Manual Print Head Alignment. For details on Manual Print Head Alignment, see “Manual Print Head Alignment” on page 119. “The transport unit may not be clean. Perform sheet cleaning. ” When a sheet cleaning operation is necessary, the message is displayed before printing. Press the OK button on the machine to start printing. We recommend that you perform sheet cleaning after printing finishes, as failure to perform sheet cleaning may affect the print quality. See “Cleaning the Inside of the Machine with a Cleaning Sheet” on page 129. “**** Error code” “****” is an alphanumeric code that varies according to the error status. z When “5100” or “5110” is displayed (1) Turn off the machine, and lift the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) to check if there are any foreign objects inside the machine. (2) Move the Print Head Holder (the part that holds the ink tanks) to the right side gently by hand if you can move it manually. Make sure that the ink tanks are securely set in the Print Head Holder. (3) Turn on the machine. If the same error occurs, follow the instruction in “When other codes are displayed” described below. z When other codes are displayed Turn off the machine, and unplug the power cord of the machine from the power supply. After 5 minutes or more, plug the power cord of the machine back in, and then turn on the machine. If the same error occurs, contact your Canon service representative. “Scanner is not operating correctly.” Turn off the machine, and unplug the power cord of the machine from the power supply. After 5 minutes or more, plug the power cord of the machine back in, and then turn on the machine. If the same error occurs, contact your Canon service representative. MessageAction
