ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5 - 17 Cleaning the corona wire If you are experiencing print quality problems, please clean the corona wire as follows: 1Turn off the printer power switch, and then unplug the printer power cord. 2Press the cover release button and then open the front cover of the printer. 3Take out the drum unit assembly (drum unit with the toner cartridge). Caution ■We recommend that you put the drum unit assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill the toner. ■To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, do not touch the electrodes shown in Figure 5-27. Figure 5-27 4Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left several times. Figure 5-28 Caution Make sure to return the tab to the Home position. If you do not, printed pages will have a black vertical stripe. 5Put the drum unit assembly back in the printer. 6Close the front cover. 7Plug the printer power cord back in, and then turn the printer power switch back on. 6 - 1 TROUBLESHOOTING 6 LCD messages If any problems occur, the printer automatically stops printing, diagnoses the problem, and displays the resulting message on the LCD to alert you. Take the appropriate action, referring to the following tables. If you cannot clear the problem, call the dealer you bought the printer from or Brother Customer Service. Troubleshooting If you do not follow the instructions for using the printer, you may be responsible for all repairs. The LCD names for the paper trays are as follows. Upper paper tray TRAY 1 Multi-purpose tray MP TRAY Optional Lower tray TRAY 2 Error messages Error messageAction BACK TRAY CLOSEDOpen the back output tray. Push down the two blue levers, and then press Go. BACK TRAY OPENClose the back output tray located at the back of the printer. BUFFER ERRORCheck the Interface settings. CARD ERRORMake sure of the following: The CompactFlash TM card is installed properly. The installed CompactFlashTM card is formatted properly Turn off the printer. Wait a few seconds, then turn it on again. If this error message appears again, replace the CompactFlash TM card with a new one. CARTRIDGE ERRORTake out the toner cartridge and put it back into the printer again. See Replacing the toner cartridge on page 5-3. CHECK NET BOARDThe istalled network board is not compatible. Please install the recommended network board. CHECK NET VER.The firmware version of the installed network board is not up to date. Please update the firmware by accessing the Brother Solutions Center at http://solutions.brother.com CLEAN DRUM UNITOpen the front cover. Take out the drum unit assembly. Gently slide the blue tab of the drum unit across several times. DIMM ERRORRe-install the DIMM correctly. Turn off the printer. Wait a few seconds, and then turn it on again. If this error message appears again, replace the DIMM with a new one. DOWNLOAD FULLAdd more memory. See Installing additional memory on page 4-12. DX LEVER ERRORMove the lever at the back of the printer to the correct paper size position; A4, Letter or Legal ERROR FUSERTurn the power switch off, wait a few seconds and then turn it on again. Leave the printer for 15 minutes with the power on. FONT FULLAdd more memory. See Installing additional memory on page 4-12.
TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 2 FRONT COVER OPENClose the front cover of the printer. FUSER COVER OPENClose the jam clear cover located behind the back output tray at the back of the printer. IGNORE DATAMake sure that you use the correct driver, or add more memory. See Installing additional memory on page 4-12. JAM XXXCarefully pull out the jammed paper from the indicated area as shown in Paper jams and how to clear them on page 6-5. MANUAL FEEDPut the same size of paper in the multi-purpose tray as is shown on the LCD. If the printer is paused, press Go. MEDIATYPE ERRORSpecify the correct type of media. MEMORY FULLAdd more memory. See Installing additional memory on page 4-12. NO DX TRAYPut the duplex tray on the printer properly. See page 1-37. NO PAPER XXXPut paper in the empty tray. NO TRAY XXXPut the paper tray in the printer. PRINT OVERRUNReduce the resolution or add the optional memory. See Installing additional memory on page 4-12. Set Page Protection to the correct size. See Device Options on page 2-5 and SETUP on page 3-16. SIZE ERROR DXYou can only use A4, Letter and Legal size for duplex printing. Check the printer driver setting and put the correct sized paper in the paper tray or multi-purpose tray that is selected in the printer driver. See What kind of paper can I use? on page 1-5. SIZE ERROR T1/T2Put the same size paper in the paper tray or multi-purpose tray that is selected in the printer driver. See What kind of paper can I use? on page 1-5. SIZE MISMATCHPut the same size paper in the paper tray or multi-purpose tray that is selected in the printer driver, and then press Go. STORAGE FULLDelete unnecessary macros or fonts, or replace the CompactFlash TM card or HDD with a new one. TRAY 1 ERRORTake out the tray 1 from the printer and push it back in firmly. TRAY 2 ERRORTake out the tray 2 from the printer and push it back in firmly. TONER LIFE ENDReplace the toner cartridge with a new one. See Replacing the toner cartridge on page 5-3. TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 4 Troubleshooting paper handling First, make sure that you are using paper that meets our recommended paper specifications. See What kind of paper can I use? on page 1-5. ProblemRecommendation The printer does not load paper.■If paper is in the paper tray, make sure it is straight. If the paper is curled, you should straighten it before printing. Sometimes it is helpful to remove the paper, turn the stack over, and then put it back in the paper tray. ■Reduce the amount of paper in the paper tray, and then try again. ■Make sure that manual feed mode is not set in the printer driver. ■If there is paper dust on the separation roller, wipe it off with a moistened soft cloth. ■The pickup roller or separation pad needs to be replaced. Please call your dealer or Brother customer service for a replacement. The printer does not load paper from the multi-purpose tray.■Fan the paper well and put it back in firmly. ■Make sure you have chosen the manual feed mode in the printer driver. The printer does not load envelopes.■The printer can load envelopes from the multi-purpose tray. You must set up your application software to print on the size of envelopes you are using. This is usually done in the page setup or document setup menu of your software. Please see your software application manual for instructions. Envelope is creased after it is printed.■Open the back output tray, and push down the blue tabs that are at the left-hand and right-hand sides of the back of the printer. There is a paper jam.■Clear the jammed paper (see Paper jams and how to clear them on page 6-5). ■If there is paper dust on the separation roller, wipe it off with a moistened soft cloth. ■The pickup roller or separation pad needs to be replaced. Please call your dealer or Brother customer service for a replacement. The printer feeds multiple pages.■The pickup roller or separation pad needs to be replaced. Please call your dealer or Brother customer service for a replacement. The printer does not print to the face-down output tray.■Close the back output tray. The printed pages are curled, so the face-down output tray cannot hold the maximum number of sheets.■Turn over the paper in the paper tray. ■Change the printer driver setting in Media Type to a thicker setting. The printer does not print. ■Make sure that the cable is connected to the printer. ■Make sure that you have chosen the appropriate printer driver. When printing on normal paper, it creases.■Change the printer driver setting in Media to the Thin setting. When printing on Legal size paper or longer sized paper, the paper slides off the top output tray.■Pull up the output tray support flap.
6 - 5 TROUBLESHOOTING Paper jams and how to clear them If paper jams inside the printer, the printer will stop. One of the following LCD messages will appear to tell you where to find the jammed paper. Figure 6-1 Paper may jam in the paper tray, inside the printer, in the back output tray or where the paper comes out of the printer. Check where the jam is and follow the instructions on the next few pages to remove the jammed paper. If the error message still appears on the LCD after you remove the jammed paper, there may be more paper jammed somewhere else. Please check the printer thoroughly. After you have removed all the jammed paper, open the front cover and then close it again to start printing. Do not use the following: ■Bent/wrinkled paper ■Moist paper ■Paper that does not meet specificationsPaper jam in the multi-purpose tray Paper jam in the upper paper tray (TRAY 1) Paper jam in the lower tray (TRAY 2) Paper jam inside the printer Paper jam where the paper comes out of the printer Paper jam in the back output tray Paper jam in the duplex unit JAM REAR JAM MP TRAY JAM INSIDE JAM TRAY 1 JAM TRAY 2 JAM DUPLEX JAM MP TRAY JAM TRAY1 JAM TRAY2 JAM INSIDE JAM REAR JAM DUPLEX
TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 6 JAM MP TRAY (paper jam in the multi-purpose tray) If there is a paper jam in the multi-purpose tray, follow these steps: 1Press the cover release button and then open the front cover of the printer. 2Take out the drum unit assembly (drum unit with the toner cartridge). 3Remove the paper from the multi-purpose tray. 4Fan the paper stack, then put it back in the multi-purpose tray. Figure 6-2 5When loading paper in the multi-purpose tray, make sure it touches the back of the tray and stays below the maximum paper mark (▼). 6Open the front cover of the printer and close it, or press Go to start printing. 6 - 7 TROUBLESHOOTING JAM TRAY 1 / TRAY 2 (Paper jam inside the Paper tray) If a paper jam occurs inside the paper tray, follow these steps: 1Pull the paper tray completely out of the printer. TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 8 2Use both hands to slowly pull out the jammed paper. Figure 6-4 3Put paper below the maximum paper mark (▼). While pressing the [blue] paper-guide release lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size. Check that the guides are firmly in the slots. 4Put the paper tray firmly back in the printer. 5Open the front cover of the printer, and then close it to resume printing. Caution Do not take out the upper paper tray while paper is feeding from a lower paper tray because this will cause a paper jam. ■If you cannot pull out a small piece of jammed paper, you can remove it by turning the dial, as shown below.
