6 - 8 TROUBLESHOOTING JAM A1 / JAM A2 (paper jam in the paper tray) If there is a paper jam in the paper tray, follow these steps: 1Pull out the paper tray. 2Take out the jammed paper. Figure 6-2 3Put the paper tray back in the printer. 4Open the back cover. If there is any jammed paper where the paper comes out, remove it. 5Close the back cover. ■Do not touch the toner surface of the jammed paper. It might stain your hands or clothes. ■After removing the jammed paper, and the next printed page is stained with toner, print several test pages before restarting your print job. ■Remove the jammed paper carefully to prevent spreading toner. ■Take care not to stain your hands and clothes. Wash toner stains immediately with cold water. ■Never touch the transfer roller. ■If the paper in the paper tray is creased at the edges, paper jams can occur. To prevent this, please turn the paper over. Do not use the following paper: ■Bent/curled paper ■Moist paper ■Paper that does not meet specifications JAM A1 JAM A2
TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 9 JAM B (paper jam at the entrance to the fusing roller) If there is a paper jam at the entrance to the fusing roller, follow the same steps to remove the jammed paper as for JAM C (paper jam where the paper comes out of the printer). Otherwise, follow the steps below: 1Open the back cover. 2Remove the jammed paper by holding it with both hands and pulling it slowly toward you. Figure 6-3 3If the paper is caught in the registration roller, remove the jammed paper by holding it with both hands and pulling it slowly toward you. Figure 6-4 The fusing roller is extremely hot during operation. Remove the paper carefully. If you have the duplex unit installed, open the duplex back cover and then duplex inside unit first before open the back cover of the printer. JAM B
6 - 10 TROUBLESHOOTING If the paper is caught in the fusing roller, follow the steps below: 4Open the back cover. Figure 6-5 5Release the fusing unit pressure release levers on both sides. Figure 6-6 6Remove the jammed paper at the back of the printer by holding it with both hands and pulling it slowly toward you. Figure 6-7 7Lock the fusing unit pressure release levers and close the top cover. 8Close the back cover.
TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 11 JAM C (paper jam where the paper comes out of the printer) If paper has passed behind the back cover and there is a paper jam where the paper comes out, follow the steps below: 1Open the back cover and release the fusing unit pressure release levers. Figure 6-8 2Remove the jammed paper by pulling it out slowly. Figure 6-9 If you have the duplex unit installed, open the duplex back cover and then the duplex inside unit first before opening the back cover of the printer. JAM C

TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 15 3If the paper is caught in the lower exit of the duplex unit, remove the jammed paper by pulling it out slowly. Figure 6-16 4If the jammed paper is at the upper exit of the duplex unit, remove it by rotating the green pinch roller downwards to feed the paper out through the exit of the unit. 6 - 16 TROUBLESHOOTING Improving the print quality If you are having problems with print quality, please do a test print first (press the Set button 3 times). If the problem appears on the printout, then match it to one of the examples below and follow the recommendation. If the problem does not appear on the test print, please check driver settings and the interface cables as the problem may not lie with printer. You can resolve a print quality problem by replacing a toner cartridge with a new one when the toner indicators start blinking or the LCD shows the TONER EMPTY message. Examples of poor print qualityRecommendation White lines or bands or ribbing across the page1) Check that the printer is on a solid level surface. 2) Check that the back cover is closed properly. 3) Check that the toner cartridges are installed properly. 4) Shake the toner cartridges gently. 5) Check that the transfer roller is installed properly. 6) Replace the transfer roller. Colors are light or unclear on the whole page1) Check that the recommended paper was used. 2) Change the paper to freshly unpacked paper, and then check that the problem is solved. 3) Check that the back cover is closed properly. 4) Shake the toner cartridges gently. 5) Clean the scanner dust glass. White streaks or bands down the pageClean the dust proof glass. Identify the missing color and replace that toner cartridge. *The toner has probably reached the end of its life. However, when you see a white vertical line on the toner roller, try the following procedure. 1) Cut a sheet approx. 50mm x 50mm out of a transparency film. 2) Insert the film about 10mm into the gap between the toner roller and the blade. 3) Slide the film and pull it out as shown below. White spots or hollow print 1) Change the paper to freshly unpacked paper, and then check that the problem was solved. 2) Check that the recommended paper was used. 3) Check that the room temperature is higher than 10 °C (50 °F) Completely blank or some colors are missing1) Check that the back cover is closed properly. 2) Check that the front cover is closed properly. 3) Identify the missing color and check that the toner cartridge is installed properly. 4) Replace the toner cartridge. 5) Replace the OPC belt cartridge.
