Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 93 C eUsing both hands, gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. fClose the fuser cover (1) and lift the two green levers at the left and right hand sides. gClose the back cover. hPut the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine. iClose the front cover of the machine. 1
94 Paper is jammed underneath Paper Tray 1 or in the fuser unit C If the LCD shows Jam Duplex, follow these steps: Jam Duplex aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine and check inside the machine. bIf paper is not caught inside the machine, check underneath the paper tray. Note DO NOT put the paper tray back in at this point. cIf the paper is not caught in the paper tray, open the back cover. dPush the grey lever on the left hand side (1) to the right. HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. When you open the front or back cover of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. 1
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 95 C ePull out the jammed paper slowly. fReset the grey lever on the left hand side (1) back to the original position. gClose the back cover. hPut the paper tray firmly back in the machine. Routine maintenanceC CAUTION The drum unit contains toner, so handle it carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once. Cleaning the outside of the machineC CAUTION Use neutral detergents. Cleaning with volatile liquids such as thinner or benzine will damage the outside surface of the machine. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia. DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt from the control panel. It may crack the panel. DO NOT use flammable substances or any type of spray to clean the inside or outside of the machine. Doing this may cause a fire or electrical shock. (For more information, See Important safety instructions on page 54.) 1
96 Clean the outside of the machine as follows: C aTurn off the machine’s power switch. Disconnect all cables, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical socket. bPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. cWipe the outside of the machine with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust. dRemove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray. eWipe the inside of the paper tray with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust. fRe-load the paper and put the paper tray firmly back in the machine. gPlug the machine’s power cord back into the AC electrical socket first, and reconnect all cables. Turn the machine’s power switch. Cleaning the scannerC aTurn off the machine’s power switch. Disconnect all cables, and then unplug the power cord from the AC electrical socket. bLift the document cover (1). Clean the white plastic surface (2) and scanner glass (3) underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with a non-flammable glass cleaner. 1 3 2
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 97 C cIn the ADF unit, clean the white bar (1) and the scanner glass strip (2) underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with a non-flammable glass cleaner. Note In addition to cleaning the scanner glass and glass strip with a non-flammable glass cleaner, run your finger tip over the glass strip to see if you can feel anything on it. If you feel dirt or debris, clean the glass strip again concentrating on that area. You may need to repeat the cleaning process three or four times. To test, make a copy after each cleaning. dPlug the machine’s power cord back into the AC electrical socket first, and reconnect all cables. Turn on the machine’s power switch. Cleaning the laser scanner windowsC CAUTION DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol to clean the laser scanner windows. DO NOT touch the laser scanner windows with your fingers. aTurn off the machine’s power switch. Disconnect all cables, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical socket. bPress the front cover release button and then open the front cover.
98 cHold the green handle of the drum unit. Lift the drum unit up and then pull it out until it stops. dRelease the grey lock lever (1) that is on the left side of the machine. Lift the front of the drum unit and pull the drum unit completely out of the machine using the green handles on the drum unit.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 99 C HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. When you open the front cover of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. CAUTION Make sure that you use the drum unit handles when carrying it. DO NOT hold the sides of the drum unit. We recommend that you place the drum unit on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.
100 eWipe the scanner windows (1) with a dry, lint-free cloth. fPut the drum unit back in the machine as follows. 1Make sure that the grey lock lever (1) is in the up position and put the drum unit in the machine. Push down the grey lock lever (1). 1
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance 101 C Note When you put the drum unit in the machine, match the green guides (1) of the drum unit handle to the green arrows (2) on both sides of the machine. 2Push the drum unit in until it stops. gClose the front cover of the machine. hPlug the machine’s power cord back into the AC electrical socket first, and reconnect all cables. Turn on the machine’s power switch.
102 Cleaning the corona wiresC If you have print quality problems, clean the corona wires as follows: aTurn off the machine’s power switch. Disconnect all cables, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical socket. bPress the front cover release button and then open the front cover. cHold the green handle of the drum unit. Lift the drum unit up and then pull it out until it stops. dUsing their coloured handles to lift them out, remove all four toner cartridges from the drum unit.
