This chapter includes: • Loading originals • Selecting print media • Changing the size of the paper in the paper tray • Loading paper • Setting the paper size and type Loading originals You can use the scanner glass or DADF to load an original for copying, scanning, and sending a fax. On the scanner glass Make sure that no originals are in the DADF. If an original is detected in the DADF, the machine gives it priority over the original on the scanner glass. To get the best scan quality, especially for colored or gray-scaled images, use the scanner glass. 1 Lif t and open the scanner lid. 2Place the original face down on the scanner glass and align it with the registration guide at the top left corner of the glass. 3 Close the scanner lid. In the DADF Using the DADF, you can load up to 100 sheets of 75 g/m2 (20 lb bond) paper for one job. When you use the DADF: • Do not load paper smaller than 69(W) x 145(L) mm (2.7 x 5.7 inches) or larger than 216(W) x 356(L) mm (8.5 x 14 inches). • Do not attempt to load the following types of paper: - carbon-paper or carbon-backed paper - coated paper - onion skin or thin paper - wrinkled or creased paper - curled or rolled paper - torn paper • Remove all staples and paper clips before loading. • Make sure any glue, ink, or correction fluid on the paper is completely dry before lo ading. • Do not load originals that include different sizes or weights of paper. • Do not load booklets, pamphlets, transparencies, or documents ha ving other unusual characteristics. Note • Leaving the scanner lid open while copying may affect copy quality and toner consumption. • Dust on the scanner glass may cause black spots on the printout. Always keep it clean. (Page 13.2 ) • If you are copying a page from a book or magazine, lift the scan ner lid until its hinges are caught by the stopper and then close the lid. If the book or magazine is thicker than 30 mm, st art copying with the lid open. Downloaded From ManualsPrinter.com Manuals
4.2 To load an original into the DADF: 1 Flex or fan the edge of the paper stack to separate the pages before loading originals. 2 Load the originals face up into the DADF. Make sure that the bottom of the original stack matches the paper size marked on the document input tray. 3 Ad just the document width guides to the paper size. Caution Dust on the DADF glass may cause black streaks on the printout. Always keep it clean. Selecting print media You can print on a variety of print media, such as plain paper, envelopes, labels, and transparencies. Always use print media that meet the guidelines for use with your machine. Print media that does not meet the guidelines outlined in this user’s guide may cause the following problems: • Poor print quality • Increased paper jams • Premature wear on the machine. Properties, such as wei ght, co mposition, grain, and moisture content, are important factors that affect the machine’s performance and the output quality. When you choose print materials, consider the following: • The type, size and weight of the print media for your machine are de scribed later in this section. • Desired outcome: The print media you choose should be appropriate for yo ur project. • Brightness: Some print media are whiter than others and produce sharp er, more vibrant images. • Surface smoothness: The smoothness of the print media affects how crisp th e printing looks on the paper. Caution Using print media that does not meet these specifications may cause problems, requiring repairs. Such repairs are not covered by Samsung’s warranty or service agreements. Note • Some print media may meet all of the guidelines in this section and still not produce satisfactory results. This may be the result of improper handling, unacceptable temperature and humidity levels, or other variables over which Samsung has no control. • Before purchasing large quantities of print media, ensure that it meets the requirements specified in this user’s guide. 4.4 Media sizes supported in each mode Guidelines for selecting and storing print media When selecting or loading paper, envelopes, or other print materials, keep these guidelines in mind: • Always use print media that conform with th e specifications listed on page 4.3 . • Attempting to print on damp, curled, wrinkled, or torn paper can cause p aper jams and poor print quality. • For the best print quality, use on ly high quality copier grade paper specifically recommended for use in laser printers. • Avoid using the following media types: - Paper with embossed lettering, perfora tion s, or a texture that is too smooth or too rough - Erasable bond paper - Multi-paged paper - Synthetic paper and thermally reactive paper - Carbonless paper and Tracing paper. Use of these types of paper could result in paper jams, chemical sme lls, and damage to your machine. • Store print media in its ream wrapper until you are ready to use it. Place cartons on pallets or shelves, not on the floor. Do not place heavy objects on top of the paper, whether it is packaged or unpackaged. Keep it away from moisture or other conditions that can cause it to wrinkle or curl. • Store unused print media at temperatures between 15 °C and 30 °C. Th e relative humidity should be between 10% and 70%. • Store unused print media in a moisture-proof wrap, such as a plastic cont ainer or bag, to prevent dust and moisture from contaminating your paper. • Load special media types one sheet at a time through the multi- purp ose tray to avoid paper jams. • To prevent print media, such as transparencies and label sheets, from sticking together, remove them as they print out. When selecting envelopes, consider the following factors: - Weight: The weight of the envelope paper shou ld not exceed 90 g/m2 (20 to 24 lb bond) or jamming may occur. - Construction: Prior to printing, envelopes shou ld lie flat with less than 6 mm curl, and shou ld not contain air. - Condition: Envelopes should not be wrinkled, nicked , or otherwise damaged. - Temperature: You should use envelopes that are comp atible with the heat and pressure of the machine during operation. • Use only well-constructed envelopes with sharp an d well creased folds. • Do not use stamped envelopes. • Do not use envelopes with clasps, snaps, win dows, coated lining, se lf-adhesive seals, or other synthetic materials. • Do not use damaged or poorly made envelopes. • Be sure the seam at both ends of the envelope extend s all the way to the corner of the envelope. • Envelopes with a peel-off adhesive strip or with more than on e flap that folds over to seal must use adhesives compatible with the printer’s fusing temperature for 0.1 second. Check your machine’s specification to view the fusing temperature, see page 17.1. The extra flaps and strips might cause wrinkling, creasing, or jams, an d may even damage the fuser. • For the best print quality, position margins no close r than 15 mm from the edges of the envelope. • Avoid printing over the area where the en velope’s seams meet. Acceptable Unacceptable Downloaded From ManualsPrinter.com Manuals
4.5 Transparencies • To avoid damaging the machine, use only tra nsparencies designed for use in laser printers. • Transparencies used in the printer must be able to withstand the machine’s fusing temperature. Check your machine’s specification to view the fusing temperature, see page 17.1. • Place them on a flat surface after removing them fro m the machine. • Do not leave them in the paper tray for long peri ods of time. Dust and dirt may accumulate on them, resulting in spotty printing. • To avoid smudging caused by fingerprints, han dle them carefully. • To avoid fading, do not expose printed tra nsparencies to prolonged sunlight. • Ensure that transparen ci es are not wrinkled, curled, or have any torn edges. • When you use the color printed transparency on a bea m projector, due to toner’s characteristics, it won’t be reflected in colors. Caution • Recommended media: Transparency for a Color Laser Printers produced by HP, Xerox and 3M. • It is not recommended to use paperbacked transparencies such as Xerox 3R91334, which can cause a jam or be scratched. Media typeGuidelines Note Using photographic paper or coated paper may cause problems, requiring repairs. Su ch repairs are not covered by Samsung’s warranty or service agreements. Labels • To avoid damaging the machine, use only labels de signed for use in laser printers. • When selecting labels, consider the following factors: - Adhesives: The adhesive material should be stable at your machine’s fusing temperature. Check your machine’s specification to view the fusing temperature, see page 17.1. - Arrangement: Only use labels with no exposed backing between them. Labels can peel off sheets that have spaces between the labels, causing serious jams. - Curl: Prior to printing, labels must lie flat with no more than 13 mm ( 5 inches) of curl in any directio n. - Condition: Do not use labels with wrinkles, bub bles, or other indications of separation. • Make sure that there is no exposed adhesive material between labels. Exposed areas can cause labels to peel off during printing, which can cause paper jams. Exposed adhesive can also cause damage to machine components. • Do not run a sheet of labels through the machine more than on ce. The adhesive backing is designed for only a single pass through the machine. • Do not use labels that are separating from the ba cking sheet or are wrinkled, bubbled, or otherwise damaged. Card stock or custom-sized materials Do not print on media smaller than 98 mm (3.86 i nches) wide or 148 mm (5.83 inches) long. • In the software application, set margins at least 6.4 mm (0.25 inches) away from the edges of the material . Preprinted p aper • Letterhead must be printed with heat-resistant in k that will not melt, vaporize, or release hazardous emissions when subjected to the printer’s fusing temperature for 0.1 second. Check your machine’s spec ification to view the fusing temperature, see page 17.1. • Letterhead ink must be non-flammable and sho uld not adversely affect printer rollers. • Forms and letterhead should be sealed in a moisture-p roof wrapping to prevent changes during storage. • Before you load preprinted paper, such as forms and letterhead, verify that the ink on the paper is dry. During the fusing process, wet ink can come off preprinted paper, reducing print quality. Media typeGuidelines Downloaded From ManualsPrinter.com Manuals
