Using Your Printer with a Macintosh 42 10Using Your Printer with a Macintosh Your machine supports Macintosh systems with a built-in USB interface or a 10/100 Base-TX network interface card. When you print a file from a Macint osh computer, you can use the PostScript driver by installing the PPD file. NOTE: Some printers do not support a network interface. Make sure that your printer supports a network interface by referring to Printer Specifications in your Printer User’s Guide. This chapter includes: • Installing Software • Uninstalling software • Setting Up the Printer •Printing • Scanning Installing Software The CD-ROM that came with your printer provides you with the PPD file that allows you to use the CUPS driver or Apple LaserWriter driver (only available when you use a printer which supports the PostScript driver) , for printing on a Macintosh computer. Also, it provides you with the Twain driver for scanning on a Macintosh computer. 1Make sure that you connect yo ur printer to the computer. Turn on your computer and printer. 2Insert the CD-ROM which came with your printer into the CD-ROM drive. 3Double-click CD-ROM icon that appears on your Macintosh desktop. 4Double-click the MAC_Installer folder. 5Double-click the Installer OS X icon. 6Enter the password and click OK. 7The Samsung Installer window opens. Click Continue 8Select Easy Install and click Install. Easy Install is recommended for most users. All components necessary for printer operations will be installed. If you select Custom Install, you can choose individual components to install. 9The message which warns all application will close on your computer appears, Click Continue. 10After the installation is finished, click Quit. NOTE: • If you have installed scan driver, click Restart. • After the installation is finished, see “Setting Up the Printer” on page 43 Uninstalling software Uninstall is required if you are upgrading the software, or if installation fails. 1Make sure that you connect your printer to the computer. Turn on your computer and printer. 2Insert the CD-ROM which came with your printer into the CD-ROM drive. 3Double-click CD-ROM icon that appears on your Macintosh desktop. 4Double-click the MAC_Installer folder. 5Double-click the Installer OS X icon. 6Enter the password and click OK. 7The Samsung Installer window opens. Using Your Printer with a Macintosh 43 Setting Up the Printer Set up for your printer will be different depending on which cable you use to connect the pr inter to your computer—the network cable or the USB cable. For a Network-connected NOTE: Some printers do not support a network interface. Before connecting your printe r, make sure that your printer supports a network inte rface by referring to Printer Specifications in your Printer User’s Guide. 1Follow the instructions on “Installing Software” on page 42 to install the PPD file on your computer. 2Open the Applications folder → Utilities, and Print Setup Utility . • For MAC OS 10.5~10.6, open System Preferences from the Applications folder, and click Printer & Fax. 3Click Add on the Printer List. • For MAC OS 10.5~10.6, press the “ +” icon then a display window will pop up. 4For Mac OS X 10.3, select the IP Printing tab. •For Mac OS X 10.4, click IP Printer. •For Mac OS X 10.5~10.6, click IP. 5Select Socket/HP Jet Direct in Printer Type. When printing a document containing many pages, printing performance may be enhanced by choosing Socket for Printer Type option. 6Enter the machine’s IP address in the Printer Address field. 7Enter the queue name in the Queue Name field. If you cannot determine the queue name for your machine server, try using the default queue first. 8For MAC OS 10.3, if Auto Select does not work properly, select Samsung in Printer Model and your printer name in Model Name. • For MAC OS 10.4, if Auto Se lect does not work properly, select Samsung in Print Using and your printer name in Model. • For MAC OS 10.5~10.6, if Auto Select does not work properly, select Select a driver to use... and your printer name in Print Using. Your machine appears on the Pr inter List and is set as the default printer. 9Click Add. However the composition of the printer properties window is similar. • You can check your printer name in the supplied CD-ROM. Printing a Document When you print with a Macintosh, you need to check the printer software setting in each application you use. Follow these steps to print from a Macintosh.w 1Open a Macintosh application and select the file you want to print. 2Open the File menu and click Page Setup (Document Setup in some applications). 3Choose your paper size, orientation, scaling, and other options and click OK. 4Open the File menu and click Print. 5Choose the number of copies yo u want and indicate which pages you want to print. 6Click Print when you finish setting the options. S Mac OS 10.3 Make sure that your printer is selected. Changing Printer Settings You can use advanced printing features when using your printer. From your Macintosh application, select Print from the File menu. The printer name which appears in the printer properties window may differ depending on the printer in use. Except for the name, the composition of the printer properties window is similar. NOTE: The setting options may differ depending on printers and Macintosh OS version. Layout The Layout tab provides options to adjust how the document appears on the printed page. You can print multiple pages on one sheet of paper. Select Layout from the Presets drop-down list to access the following features. • Pages per Sheet: This feature determines how many pages printed on one page. For details, see Printing Multiple Pages on One Sheet of Paper on the next column. • Layout Direction: You can select the printing direction on a page as like the examples on UI. • Border: This option allows you to print a border around each page on the sheet. • Two-Sided: This option allows you to print on both sides of a paper. Using Your Printer with a Macintosh 45 Graphics The Graphics tab provides options for selecting Resolution(Quality) and Color Mode. Select Graphics form the Presets drop-down list to access the graphic features. • Resolution(Quality): You can select the printing resolution. The higher the setting, the sharper the clarity of printed characters and graphics. The higher setting also may increase the time it takes to print a document. • Color Mode: You can set the color options. Setting to Color typically produces the best possible print quality for color documents. If yo u want to print a color document in grayscale, select Grayscale. Paper Set Paper Type to correspond to the paper loaded in the tray from which you want to print. This will let you get the best quality printout. If you load a different type of print material, select the corresponding paper type. SMac OS 10.5 S Mac OS 10.5 Job Accounting This feature lets you control an d lock all outgoing data, or change the password. • User permission: If you check this option, only users with user permission can start a print job. • Group permission: If you check this option, only groups with group permission can start a print job. Job Setting This option allows you to choose how to print or save the printing file by using the HDD . • Print Mode: The default Print Mode is Normal which is for printing without saving the printing file in the optional HDD. • User ID: This option is used when you need to find a saved file using th e control panel. • Job Name: This option is used when you need to find a saved file using the control panel. Using Your Printer with a Macintosh 46 Printer Features Advanced Options •Reverse Duplex Printing: Allows you to select general print order compare to duplex print order. If this option does not appear, your printer does not have this feature. •Darken Text: Allows you to print all the text on your document darker than on a normal document. • Fit to Page: This setting allows you to scale your print job to any selected paper size regardless of the digital document size. This can be useful when you want to check fine details on a small document. • RGB Color: This setting determines how colors are rendered. Standard is the most widely used setting which the color tone of this mo de is the closest to that of standard monitor (sRGB Monitor). Vivid mode is appropriate for printing pres entation data and charts. The color tone of Vivid mode produces more Vivid color i m a g e s t h a n t h a t o f S t a n d a r d m o d e . Device mode is best used for printing fine lines, small characters and color drawings. The color tone of Device mode may be different from that of monitor, the pure toner colors are used for printing Cyan, Ma genta and Yellow colors. SMac OS 10.5 Optional Finisher •Output Mode: This option allows you to choose the way printouts are to be arranged. ( You need to install an optional finisher such as 2- Bin Finisher or 4-Bin Mailbox. ) •Output Bin: This option allows you to choose the output bin for prinouts. (You need to install an optional finisher such as 2-Bin Finisher or 4-Bin Mailbox.) • Staple: This option staples the print outs. •Request Offset: If you don’t want the printout-sets to be in one stack, the machine places printout-sets slightly offset from one another. Front Cover •Front Cover Option: Allows you to choose the option for printing a front cover page. You can choose to print the front cover blank, preprinted, 1-sided printed or 2-sided printed. • Front Cover Source: Allows you to choose the paper source for the front cover. • Front Cover Type: Allows you to choose the paper type for the front cover. You can choose to print the back cover blank, preprinted, 1-sided printed or 2-sided printed. • Back Cover Source: Allows you to choose the paper source for the back cover. • Back Cover Type: Allows you to choose the paper type for the back cover. Front and Back Cover Option •Front and Back Cover Option: Allows you to choose the option for printing a front and back cover page. You can choose to print the front and back cover blank, preprinted, 1-sided printed or 2-sided printed. • Front and Back Cover Source: Allows you to choose the paper source for the front and back cover. • Front and Back Cover Type: Allows you to choose the paper type for the front and back cover. Smart Color •Fine Edge:Allows users to emphasize edges of texts and fine lines for improving readability and align each color channel registration in color printing mode. Using Your Printer with a Macintosh 48 Printing Multiple Pages on One Sheet of Paper You can print more than one page on a single sheet of paper. This feature provides a cost-effective way to print draft pages. 1From your Macintosh application, select Print from the File menu. 2Select Layout. 3Select the number of pages you want to print on one sheet of paper on the Pages per Sheet drop-down list. 4Select the page order from the Layout Direction option. To print a border around each page on the sheet, select the option you want from the Border drop-down list. 5Click Print, and the printer prints the selected number of pages on one side of each page. S Mac OS 10.5 Duplex Printing You can print on both sides of the paper. Before printing in the duplex mode, decide on which edge you will be binding your finished document. Th e binding options are: •Long-Edge Binding: Which is the conventional layout used in book binding. • Short-Edge Binding: Which is the type often used with calendars. 1From your Macintosh application, select Print from the File menu. 2Select the Layout. 3Select a binding orientation from Two Sided Printing option. 4Click Print and the printer prints on both sides of the paper. CAUTION: If you have selected duplex printing and then try to print multiple copies of a document, the printer may not print the document in the way you want. In case of Collated copy , if your document has odd pages, the last page of the first copy and the first page of the next copy will be printed on the front and back of one sheet. In case of Uncollated copy, the same page will be printed on the front and back of one sheet. Therefore, if you need multiple copies of a document and you want those copies on both sides of the paper, you must print them one at a time, as separate print jobs. Using Your Printer with a Macintosh 49 Scanning You can scan docoments using Image Capture program. Macintosh OS offers Image Capture program. Scanning with USB 1Make sure that your machine and computer are turned on a nd properly connected to each other. 2Place a single document face down on the document glass. OR load the document(s) face up into the ADF (or DADF). 3Start Applications and click Image Capture. NOTE: If No Image Capture device connected message ap pears, disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it. If the problem persists, please refer to the Image Capture’s help. 4Set the scan options on this program. 5Scan and save your scanned image. NOTE: • For more information about using Image Capture, please r efer to the Image Capture’s help. • Use TWAIN-compliant softwares to apply more scan options. • Yo u can also scan using TWAIN-compliant softwares, such as Ad obe Photoshop. • Scan process differs according to TWAIN-compliant so ftwares. Please refer to the user’s guide of the software. • When scanning does not operate in Image Capture, update M ac OS to the latest version. Scanning operates propery in Mac OS 10.3.9 or higher and Mac OS 10.4.7 or higher. Scanning with network 1Make sure that your machine and computer are turned on. 2Place a single document face down on the document glass. OR l oad the document(s) face up into the ADF (or DADF). 3Start Applications and click Image Capture. 4For MAC OS X 10.4~10.5 C lick Devices and click Browse Devices. For MAC OS X 10.6 Se lec t your device below SHARED. Skip to step 7. 5For MAC OS X 10.4: S el ect your machine in Twain devices option. Make sure th at Use TWAIN software checkbox is checked, and click Connect. If a warning message appears, click Change Port.. to select port. If TWAIN UI appears, from the Preference tab, click Change Port.. to select port. For MAC OS X 10.5: Ma ke s ure that Connected checkbox is checked beside y our machine in Bonjour Devices. If you want to scan using TWAIN, refer to the MAC OS X 1 0.4 procedure above. 6Set the scan options on this program. 7Scan and save your scanned image. NOTE: • For more information about using Image Capture, please r efer to the Image Capture’s help. • Use TWAIN-compliant softwares to apply more scan options. • You can also scan using TWAIN-compliant softwares, such as A dobe Photoshop. • Scan process differs according to TWAIN-compliant so ftwares.
