k 3Frame the photograph. 4Take the photograph. Self-timer mode: Press the shutter-release button halfway to focus, and then press the button the rest of the way down to start the self-timer (note that the timer will not star t if the camera is unable to focus or in other situations in which the shutter can not be released). The self-timer lamp will start to blink. Two seconds before the photogra ph is taken, the self-timer lamp will stop blinking. The shutter will be released ten seconds after the timer starts. Remote control mode : From a distance of 5 m (16 ft.) or less, aim the transmitter on the ML-L3 at either of the infrared receivers on the camera ( 03, 5) and press the ML-L3 shutter-release button. In delayed remote mode , the self-timer lamp will light for about two seconds before the shutter is released. In quick-response remote mode , the self-timer lamp will flash after the shutter has been released. In remote mirror- up mode , pressing the ML-L3 shutter-release button once raises the mirror; the shutter will be released and the self-timer lamp will flash after 30 s or when the button is pressed a second time. To cancel shooting, select another release mode. ACover the Viewfinder When taking photos without your eye to the viewfinder, remove the DK-21 rubber eyecup ( q) and insert the supplied DK-5 eyepiece cap as shown ( w). This prevents light entering via the viewfinder interfering with exposure. Hold the camera firmly when removing the rubber eyecup. DK-21 rubber eyecup DK-5 eyepiece cap
k DBefore Using the Remote Control Before using the remote control for the first t ime, remove the clear plastic battery-insulator sheet. DUsing the Built-in Flash Before taking a photograph with the flash in P, S, A , M , or 0 modes, press the Mbutton to raise the flash and wait for the M indicator to be displayed in the viewfinder ( 0143). Shooting will be interrupted if the flash is ra ised while remote control mode is in effect or after the self- timer has started. If the flash is required, the camera will only respond to the ML-L3 shutter- release button once the flash has charged. In auto or scene modes in which the flash pops up automatically, the flash will be gin charging when remote mode is selec ted; once the flash is charged, it will automatically pop up and fire when required. Note that only one photograph will be taken when the flash fi res, regardless of the number of exposures selected for Custom Setting c3 ( Self-timer; 0 214). In flash modes that support red-eye reduction, the red-eye reduction lamp will light for about one second before the shutter is released. In delayed remote mode, the self-timer lamp will light for two seconds, followed by the red-eye reduction lamp which light for one second before the shutter is released. AFocusing in Remote Control Mode The camera will not adjust focus in remote mirror-up mode or when continuous-servo autofocus is selected; note however that if any autofocus mode is selected, you can focus by pressing the camera shutter-release button ha lfway before shooting (pressing the button all the way down will not release the shutter). If auto- or single-servo autofocus is selected or the camera is in live view in delayed or quick-response remote mode, the camera will automatically adjust focu s before shooting; if the camera is unable to focus in viewfinder photography, it will return to stand-by without releasing the shutter. ARemote Mirror-up Mode Metering is not performed in remote mirror-up mode. Photos can not be framed in the viewfinder while the mirror is raised. AA In self-timer mode, a shutter speed of A is equivalent to approximately ¼ s. ASee Also For information on choosing the duration of th e self-timer, the number of shots taken, and the interval between shots, see Custom Setting c3 ( Self-timer; 0 214). For information on choosing the length of time the camera will remain in stand-by mode waiting for a signal from the remote control, see Custom Setting c5 ( Remote on duration; 0 215). For information on controlling the beeps that soun d when the self-timer and remote control are used, see Custom Setting d1 ( Beep; 0 215).

d d Image Recording Options Together, image quality and size determine how much space each photograph occupies on the memory card. Larger, higher quality images can be printed at larger sizes but also require more memory, meanin g that fewer such images can be stored on the memory card ( 0320). Image Quality Choose a file format and compression ratio (image quality). Image Quality and Size OptionFile typeDescription NEF (RAW ) NEF Raw data from the image sensor are saved directly to the memory card. Settings such as white balance and contrast can be adjusted on a computer after shooting. JPEG fine JPEGRecord JPEG images at a compression ratio of roughly 1:4 (fine quality). * JPEG normal Record JPEG images at a compression ratio of roughly 1:8 (normal quality).* JPEG basicRecord JPEG images at a compression ratio of roughly 1:16 (basic quality).* NEF (RAW )+ JPEG fine NEF/ JPEG Two images are recorded, one NEF (RAW ) image and one fine-quality JPEG image. NEF (RAW )+ JPEG normal Two images are recorded, one NEF (RAW ) image and one normal- quality JPEG image. NEF (RAW )+ JPEG basic Two images are recorded, one NEF (RAW ) image and one basic-quality JPEG image. * Size priority selected for JPEG compression .
d Image quality is set by pressing the QUAL button and rotating the main command dial until the desired setting is displayed in the control panel. AThe Shooting Menu Image quality can also be adjusted using the Image quality option in the shooting menu ( 0202). QUAL button Main command dial Control panel
d The following options can be accessed from the shooting menu. Press the G button to display the menus, high light the desired option and press 2. ❚❚ JPEG Compression Choose the type of compression for JPEG images. ❚❚NEF (RAW) Recording > Type Choose the type of compression for NEF (RAW ) images. ❚❚NEF (RAW) Recording > NEF (RAW) Bit Depth Choose a bit depth for NEF (RAW ) images. OptionDescription O Size priority Images are compressed to produce relatively uniform file size. P Optimal quality Optimal image quality. File size varies with scene recorded. OptionDescription N Lossless compressed NEF images are compressed using a reversible algorithm, reducing file size by about 20–40% with no effect on image quality. O Compressed NEF images are compressed using a non-reversible algorithm, reducing file size by about 40–55% with almost no effect on image quality. OptionDescription q 12-bit NEF (RAW ) images are recorded at a bit-depth of 12 bits. r 14-bit NEF (RAW ) images are recorded at a bit-depth of 14 bits, producing larger files but increasing the color data recorded. ANEF (RAW) Images NEF (RAW ) images can be viewed on the camera or using software such as Capture NX 2 (available separately; 0281) or ViewNX 2 (available on the supplied ViewNX 2 CD). JPEG copies of NEF (RAW ) images can be created using the NEF (RAW) processing option in the retouch menu ( 0258). Note that the option selected for image size does not affect the size of NEF (RAW ) images. ANEF+JPEG When photographs taken at settings of NEF (R AW ) + JPEG are viewed on the camera with only one memory card inserted, only the JPEG image will be displayed. If both copies are recorded to the same memory card, both copies will be erased when the photo is deleted. If the JPEG copy is recorded to a separate memory card using the Role played by card in Slot 2 > RAW Slot 1—JPEG Slot 2 option, deleting the JPEG copy will not delete the NEF (RAW ) image.
d Image Size Image size is measured in pixels.
