The router automatically detects the information in the following fields\ : • Router’s IPv6 Address on WAN. This field shows the IPv6 address that is acquired for the router’s WAN (or Internet) interface. The number after the slash (/) is the length of the prefix, which is also indicated by the underline (_) und\ er the IPv6 address. If no address is acquired, the field displays Not Available. • Router’s IPv6 Address on LAN. This field shows the IPv6 address that is acquired for the router’s LAN interface. The number after the slash (/) is the length of the prefix, which is also indicated by the underline (_) under the IPv6 address. I\ f no address is acquired, the field displays Not Available. 6. In the Login field, enter the login information for the ISP connection. This is usually the name that you use in your email address. For example\ , if your main mail account is JerAB@ISP .com, you would enter JerAB in this field. Some ISPs (like Mindspring, Earthlink, and T-DSL) require that you use your full email address when you log in. If your ISP requires your full email address, enter it in this f\ ield. 7. In the Password field, enter the password for the ISP connection. 8. In the Service Name field, enter a service name. If your ISP did not provide a service name, leave this field blank.
Specify Your Internet Settings 62 Nighthawk DST AC1900 DST Router and DST Adpater Model R7300DST Note:The default setting of the Connection Mode menu is Always On to provide a steady IPv6 connection. The DST router never terminates the connection. If the connection is terminated, for example, when the modem is turned off, the DST router attempts to reestablish the connection immediately after the PPPoE connection becomes available again. 9. Select an IPv6 Domain Name Server (DNS) Address radio button: • Get Automatically from ISP. Your ISP uses DHCP to assign your DNS servers. Your ISP automatically assigns this address. • Use These DNS Servers. If you know that your ISP requires specific servers, select this option. Enter the IP address of your ISP’s primary DNS server. If a secondary DNS server address is available, enter it also. 10. Select an IP Address Assignment radio button: • Use DHCP Server. The DST router assigns IPv6 addresses to the devices on your home network (the LAN) through a DHCP server. This method passes more information to LAN devices, but some IPv6 systems might not support the DHCv6 client function. • Auto Config. This is the default setting. 11. To specify the interface ID for the IPv6 address of the DST routers LAN interface, select the Use This Interface ID check box and enter the interface ID. If you do not specify an ID here, the DST router generates one automatically from its MAC address. 12. Click the Apply button. Your settings are saved. Change the MTU Size The maximum transmission unit (MTU) is the largest data packet a network device transmits. When one network device communicates across the Internet with another, the data packets travel through many devices along the way. If a device in the data path has a lower MTU setting than the other devices, the data packets must be split or “fragmented” to accommodate the device with the smallest MTU. The best MTU setting for NETGEAR equipment is often the default value. In some situations, changing the value fixes one problem but causes another. Leave the MTU unchanged unless one of these situations occurs: •You experience problems connecting to your ISP or other Internet service, and the technical support of either the ISP or NETGEAR recommends changing the MTU setting. These web-based applications might require an MTU change: -A secure website that does not open, or displays only part of a web page -Yahoo email
Specify Your Internet Settings 63 Nighthawk DST AC1900 DST Router and DST Adpater Model R7300DST - MSN portal - America Online’ s DSL service • Y ou use VPN and experience severe performance problems. •Y ou used a program to optimize MTU for performance reasons, and now you a\ re experiencing connectivity or performance problems. Note: An incorrect MTU setting can cause Internet communication problems. For example, you might not be able to access certain websites, frames within websites, secure login pages, or FTP or POP servers. To change the MTU size: 1. Launch a web browser from a computer or WiFi device that is connected to\ the network. 2. Enter http://www .routerlogin.net. A login window displays. 3. Enter the DST router user name and password. The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive. The BASIC Home page displays. 4. Select ADV ANCED > Setup > WAN Setup . 5. In the MTU Size field, enter a value from 64 to 1500. 6. Click the Apply button. Your settings are saved. If you suspect an MTU problem, a common solution is to change the MTU to\ 1400. If you are willing to experiment, you can gradually reduce the MTU from the maximum\ value of 1500
Specify Your Internet Settings 64 Nighthawk DST AC1900 DST Router and DST Adpater Model R7300DST until the problem goes away. The following table describes common MTU sizes and applications. Table 4. Common MTU sizes MTUApplication 1500 The largest Ethernet packet size. This setting is typical for connections that do not use PPPoE or VPN, and is the default value for NETGEAR DST routers, adapters\ , and switches. 1492 Used in PPPoE environments. 1472 Maximum size to use for pinging. (Larger packets are fragmented.) 1468 Used in some DHCP environments. 1460 Usable by AOL if you do not send or receive large email attachments, for example. 1436 Used in PPTP environments or with VPN. 1400 Maximum size for AOL DSL. 576 Typical value to connect to dial-up ISPs. Enable the Bridge or Add a VLAN Tag Group Some devices, such as an IPTV, cannot work behind a router’s network address translation (NAT) or firewall. Based on what your Internet service provider (ISP) re\ quires, for the device to connect to the ISP’s network directly, you must enable the bridge between the device and the router’s Internet port or add new VLAN tag groups to the bridge. Enable the Bridge If your device, such as an IPTV, is connected to the DST router’s Ethernet port or WiFi network, you can enable the bridge so that the packets sent between the \ device and the DST router’s Internet port are not processed through the DST router’s network address translation (NAT). To enable the bridge: 1. Launch a web browser from a computer or WiFi device that is connected to\ the network. 2. Enter http://www .routerlogin.net. A login window displays. 3. Enter the DST router user name and password. The user name is admin. The default password is password . The user name and password are case-sensitive.

68 6 6. Optimize Performance You can set up the DST router to optimize performance for applications such as Internet gaming, high-definition video streaming, and VoIP communication. By default, the DST router uses Wi-Fi Multimedia Quality of Service (WMM QoS). This chapter contains the following sections: •Use Dynamic QoS to Optimize Internet Traffic Management •Improve Network Connections With Universal Plug and Play •Wi-Fi Multimedia Quality of Service
Optimize Performance 69 Nighthawk DST AC1900 DST Router and DST Adpater Model R7300DST Use Dynamic QoS to Optimize Internet Traffic Management Dynamic Quality of Service (QoS) helps improve your DST router’s Internet traffic management capabilities through better application and device identifica\ tion, bandwidth allocation, and traffic prioritization techniques. Dynamic QoS resolves traffic congestion when the Internet bandwidth is limited and different demands compete for bandwidth. If your Internet download and upload speed is 250 Mbps or less and you l\ ike gaming and streaming video, then you can benefit from enabling Dynamic QoS. Note: If you use a gigabit Internet connection, or your Internet download and \ upload speed is 300 Mbps or faster, then you don’t need to use Dynamic QoS.
