Hardware Setup 21 Nighthawk DST AC1900 DST Router and DST Adpater Model R7300DST If your modem uses a battery backup, remove the battery. 2. Plug in and turn on your modem. If your modem uses a battery backup, replace the battery. 3. Connect your modem to the Internet port of your DST router with the yellow Ethernet cable that came with your DST router. 4. Connect the power cord to your DST router and plug the power cord into an outlet. Note:Do not plug the power cord into a surge protector. 5. Wait for the Power LED on the front panel to light amber and turn white. 6. If no LEDs are lit, slide the Power On/Off switch on the rear panel of the DST router to the On position. 7. If only the Power LED is lit and the other LEDs are not lit, press the LED On/Off button on the rear panel of the DST router to the On position. In the room where you want to improve WiFi coverage or add Ethernet, plu\ g your DST adapter into an electrical outlet and wait for the Power LED to light so\ lid green. Connect Add-On DST Adapters to the DST Router After you set up your DST network, you can add up to 8 DST adapters to e\ xtend your DST network to 8 more locations. Connect to the DST Router Network and Access the DST Router 26 Nighthawk DST AC1900 DST Router and DST Adpater Model R7300DST Connect to the DST Router You can connect to the DST router’s network through a wired or WiFi connection. If you set up your computer to use a static IP address, change the settings so that it uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Connect to the DST Router With an Ethernet Cable You can connect your computer to the DST router using an Ethernet cable and join the DST router’s local area network (LAN). To connect your computer to the DST router with an Ethernet cable: 1. Make sure that the DST router is receiving power (its Power LED is lit). 2. Connect an Ethernet cable to an Ethernet port on your computer. 3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to one of the numbered Ethernet ports. Your computer connects to the local area network (LAN). A message might display on your computer screen to notify you that an Ethernet cable is connected. Connect to the DST Router With a WiFi Connection You can connect to the DST router’s WiFi network manually buy finding and selecting the WiFi network or using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), or you can manually find and select the WiFi network. Manual Method To manually find and select the WiFi network: 1. Make sure that the DST router is receiving power (its Power LED is lit). 2. On the WiFi device that you want to connect to your router, open the software application that manages your WiFi connections. This software scans for all WiFi networks in your area. 3. Look for the DST router’s WiFi network name (SSID) and select it.

The default SSID is on the product label. 4. Enter the DST router WiFi password. The default WiFi password (also referred to as the network key or passp\ hrase) is also on the product label. Your WiFi device connects to the WiFi network. WPS Method Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a standard for easily adding computers \ and other devices to a home network while maintaining security. To use WPS (Push N Connect), make sure that all WiFi devices to be connected to the network are Wi-Fi certified and \ support WPS. During the connection process, the client gets the security settings from the D\ ST router so that every device in the network supports the same security settings. To use WPS to connect to the WiFi network: 1. Make sure that the DST router is receiving power (its Power LED is lit)\ . 2. Check the WPS instructions for your computer or WiFi device. 3. Press the WPS button on the DST router for 3–5 seconds. The WPS and DST Adapter Sync LED on the DST router blinks. 4. Within two minutes, on your computer or WiFi device, press its WPS button or follow its instructions for WPS connections. The WPS and DST Adapter Sync LED on the DST router lights solid white when the computer or WiFi device connects to your DST router . Your computer or WiFi device connects to the WiFi network.

It is important that you understand the difference so that you know which login to use when. Types of logins: • ISP login. The login that your ISP gave you logs you in to your Internet service. Your service provider gave you this login information in a letter or some other way. If you cannot find this login information, contact your service provider. • WiFi network key or password. Your DST router is preset with a unique WiFi network name (SSID) and password for WiFi access. This information is on the DST router label. • Router login. This logs you in to the DST router interface from a web browser as admin. Use a Web Browser to Access the DST Router When you connect to the DST router’s network (either with WiFi or with an Ethernet cable), you can use a web browser to access the DST router to view or change its settings. The first time you access the DST router, the DST router’s installation assistant automatically checks to see if your DST router can connect to your Internet service and checks if there are any DST adapters on the network. If the DST router’s installation assistant detects a DST adapter, it helps you set up your DST network. If you are unable to log in to the DST router using a web browser, see Cannot Log In to the DST Router on page 250 for more information. Automatic Internet and DST Network Setup You can use the DST router’s installation assistant to set up your Internet and DST network automatically, or you can log in to the DST router and use the DST router’s setup pages to set up your Internet and DST network manually. Before you start the setup process, get your ISP information and make sure that the computers and devices in the network are using the settings described here. When your Internet service starts, your Internet service provider (ISP) typically gives you all the information needed to connect to the Internet. For DSL service, you might need the following information to set up your DST router: •The ISP configuration information for your DSL account •ISP login name and password •Fixed or static IP address settings (special deployment by the ISP; this setting is rare) If you cannot locate this information, ask your ISP to provide it. When your Internet connection is working, you no longer need to launch the ISP login program on your computer to access the Internet. When you start an Internet application, your DST router automatically logs you in.

Installation and basic setup takes about 15 minutes to complete. To automatically set up your Internet and DST network: 1. Make sure the DST adapter is connected to the DST router by checking the\ following LEDs: • The DST LED on the DST adapter is solid green or amber . • The DST LED on the DST router is solid blue. If the DST LED on the DST adapter is red, the link performance is weak. \ You might want to move the DST adapter to another electrical outlet with a faster conne\ ction. For more information, see Connect the DST Adapter to the DST Router on page 22. 2. Connect a computer or WiFi device to the DST router. You can use a wired connection to connect a computer to the DST router, or you can use a WiFi connection to connect a computer or WiFi device to the DST router\ . For more information, see Connect to the DST Router on page 26. 3. Launch a web browser . The page that displays depends on whether you accessed the DST router be\ fore and whether the DST router is connected to a modem or another router or gate\ way: • The first time that you are setting up the Internet connection for your \ DST router, the browser goes to http://www .routerlogin.net and one of the following pages displays: - If the DST router’s installation assistant detects that the DST router is connected to a modem, the following page displays:

For more information, see Log In to the DST Router on page 31. 4. If a modem is detected, select how you want to set up your Internet and \ click the Next button. 5. If an existing router or gateway is detected, select the Help Me Choose radio button or Let Me Choose radio button: • Help Me Choose. If you select the Help Me Choose radio button, NETGEAR genie asks you a few questions to determine if you should set the DST router i\ n router mode or access point mode. W e recommend that you select the Help Me Choose radio button. • Let Me Choose. If you select the Let Me Choose radio, you must select the Router Mode radio button or the Access Point Mode radio button. You can change the mode by running the Setup Wizard again. Follow the onscreen instructions. The DST router connects to the Internet. 7. After the DST router detects your Internet connection, you are prompted \ to download the free genie app and free ReadySHARE V ault app. 8. Select the check box next to the apps that you want to download and clic\ k the Next button. The DST router’s installation assistant checks the DST router’s firmware version. 9. If the DST router’ s firmware needs to be updated, follow the onscreen instructions to upda\ te the firmware.
