109 9 9. Manage Dynamic DNS and Access Storage Devices Through the Internet With Dynamic DNS, you can use the Internet and a personal domain name to access a USB storage device that is attached to a USB port on the DST router when you are not home. If you know the IP address of the DST router (and the IP address did not change), you can also access the USB storage device by using the IP address. This chapter includes the following sections: •Set Up and Manage Dynamic DNS •Access Storage Devices Through the Internet •Remotely Access a USB Device Using ReadyCLOUD For information about how to connect the USB drive and to specify its settings, see Chapter 8, Share USB Devices Attached to the Router.
Manage Dynamic DNS and Access Storage Devices Through the Internet 110 Nighthawk DST AC1900 DST Router and DST Adpater Model R7300DST Set Up and Manage Dynamic DNS Internet service providers (ISPs) assign numbers called IP addresses t\ o identify each Internet account. Most ISPs use dynamically assigned IP addresses. This means that the IP address can change at any time. You can use the IP address to access your network remotely, but most people don’t know what their IP addresses are or when thes\ e numbers change. To make it easier to connect, you can get a free account with a Dynamic D\ NS service that lets you use a domain name to access your home network. To use this account, you must set up the DST router to use Dynamic DNS. Then the DST router notifies the Dynamic DNS service provider whenever its IP address changes. When you access your D\ ynamic DNS account, the service finds the current IP address of your home network a\ nd automatically connects you. If your ISP assigns a private WAN IP address (such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x), the Dynamic DNS service does not work because private addresses are not routed on th\ e Internet. Your Personal FTP Server With your customized free URL, you can use FTP to access your network wh\ en you aren’t home through Dynamic DNS. To set up your FTP server, you must register for a free NETGEAR Dynamic DNS (DDNS) service account and specify the account set\ tings on the DST router’s Dynamic DNS page. You can use DDNS with a VPN tunnel for a secure connection.
