information ab out modem initialization strings, see Installation and
Switc h Ad ministration for the DEFINITY AUDIX System Release 4.0,
    585-300-122.
    Alarm Relay
Previous releases of the DEFINITY AUDIX system c ould use the two-wire
alarm relay to notify INADS of major alarms. Althoug h the DEFINTY
AUDIX system c an notify INADS of minor alarms via the external
mod em, the system will no longer use the two-wire alarm relay to sig nal
    minor alarms.
For more information ab out Alarm Orig ination for DEFINITY AUDIX
system Release 4.0, inc lud ing self-d iag nostic s, the external mod em,
and the alarm relay, see Chap ter 3
    .
    LEDs
DEFINITY AUDIX system Release 4.0 uses three lig ht-emitting d iod es
(LEDs) on its fac ep late to disp lay system status and health. Previous
system releases used a liq uid c rystal d isp lay (LCD) for the same
p urp ose. The LCD used three maintenanc e b uttons and a struc tured set
of menus to display messag es ab out system status.
The LEDs on Release 4.0 disp lay information similar to the messages on
the old LCD. However, tec hnic ians and system ad ministrators c annot
manipulate the LEDs to display different types of messag es while the
    system is running .
    NOTE:
The two rec essed maintenanc e b uttons on DEFINTY AUDIX
system Release 4.0 d o not p erform the same func tions as the three
maintenanc e b uttons for the LCD on p revious system releases. For
more information ab out the LEDs and rec essed maintenanc e
b uttons on Release 4.0, see Chapter 3
    .
    MO Disk Drive
DEFINITY AUDIX system Release 4.0 uses a mag neto-optic al (MO) d isk
d rive for b ac kup s and software up g rad es. Previous releases used a
    tape drive.
The MO d isk drive is smaller than the tap e drive, whic h helps reduc e the
system’s d emand for sp ac e in the c ustomer’s switc h. The rewritab le
disks for the MO disk drive offer slig htly more storage sp ac e than the
tap es for the tap e d rive, as well as flexibility for data ac c ess and reuse.
For more information ab out the MO d isk d rive, see Chap ter 2
    , Chap ter 3,
    and Chapter 3.

    Switch Integration
    Switch Integration
In most switc hes, the DEFINITY AUDIX system op erates in a mode
c alled d isplay set integration. In d isplay set integration, the DEFINITY
AUDIX system c ommunic ates with sub sc rib ers’ telep hones to p erform
suc h ac tions as lig hting MWIs and rec ord ing c allers’ names and
extensions. The four main c hapters of this b ook foc us solely on d isp lay
    set integ ration.
The DEFINITY AUDIX system c an, however, c ommunic ate with the
switc h in another mode, c alled
control link integration. In c ontrol link
integ ration mode, the DEFNITY AUDIX system c onnec ts to a Proc essor
Interfac e (PI) or a Proc essor Gateway (PGATE) c irc uit p ac k in the switc h.
When the DEFINITY AUDIX system integrates with the switc h in c ontrol
link mode, the system c ommunic ates d irec tly with the switc h, rather than
sub sc rib ers’ telephones. The switc h, for example, lights subsc rib ers’
MWIs when they have AUDIX messag es, and it c an route c alls away
from a DEFINITY AUDIX p ort that is b usy. Control link integ ration
streamlines the DEFINITY AUDIX system’s interac tions with the switc h,
so the system c an op erate faster and more effic iently.
    DCS Networking
Control link integration allows the DEFINTY AUDIX system to op erate
seamlessly in a Distrib uted Communic ation System (DCS) network—a
network of switc hes that are c onnec ted so they ac t as one switc h. In
c ontrol link mod e, the DEFINTY AUDIX system c an sup p ort sub sc ribers
on up to 20 remote switc hes (or
nod es) in a DCS network as loc al
    subscribers.
    Analog Port Emulation
In d isplay set integration, the DEFINITY AUDIX system c an emulate two
d ig ital station c irc uit pac ks: the TN754 8-p ort d igital c irc uit pac k or the
TN2181 16-p ort d ig ital c irc uit p ac k. In c ontrol link integ ration, the
DEFINTY AUDIX system c an also emulate a 16-p ort analog c irc uit pac k,
    the TN746.
Analog p ort emulation inc reases system sp eed and may b e less
exp ensive to install for some c ustomers. However, analog p ort emulation
is not c omp atib le with some features for d ig ital p ort emulation, suc h as
    Dig ital Networking .

The c ustomer need s an ind ivid ual to c oord inate p lanning efforts with a
p rojec t manag er and other Luc ent Tec hnolog ies staff to ensure that all
imp lementation tasks are c ompleted . This ind ivid ual should p erform
suc h tasks as the following :
nProvide Luc ent Tec hnolog ies initial subsc rib er information.
nEnsure the eq uip ment room is read y when the system arrives.
nProvid e for the eq uip ment’s sec urity.
In add ition to this c oord inator, the c ustomer should also selec t an
ind ividual who will c ond uc t ongoing system administration after
installation. For a d etailed desc ription of the system ad ministrator’s
rec ommend ed d uties and q ualific ations, see
    Planning for the DEFINITY
    AUDIX System Release 4.0, 585-300-602.
    Environmental Requirements
The DEFINITY AUDIX system must op erate in an environment that
c onforms to sp ec ific p arameters for its atmosp here and air q uality.
Installing the system in an environment that d oes not meet these
req uirements c an shorten its life and d isrup t its op eration.
