Considerations for the DEFINTIY AUDIX system Native and Non-native Mode The DEFINITY AUDIX system c an op erate with almost any Luc ent Tec hnolog ies switc h release. However, only DEFINITY switc h releases 7.1 and later will rec ognize the DEFINITY AUDIX system’s TN568 c irc uit pack. The c irc uitry for the DEFINITY AUDIX system is assig ned a vintage numb er that c ommunic ates the system’s func tion to the switc h. The vintag e number for DEFINITY AUDIX system Release 4.0 is 48. Switc h releases 7.1 and later rec og nize this number as belonging to the DEFINITY AUDIX system’s TN568 c irc uit pac k. Switc h releases earlier than 7.1rec og nize vintag e numb er 48 as b elong ing to one of two d ig ital p ort c irc uit pac ks: nTN754, an 8-port digital circuit pack nTN2181, a 16-p ort d ig ital c irc uit p ac k4 When the DEFINTY AUDIX system operates in a switc h that rec og nizes its vintage numb er as a TN568, the system is op erating in native mod e. When the DEFINITY AUDIX system op erates in a switc h that rec og nizes the system as a TN754 or TN2181 c irc uit p ac k, it is op erating in non-native mod e.5 Switch releases Considerations for the DEFINTIY AUDIX system All Calls using loopb ac k trunks c annot terminate at the DEFINITY AUDIX system Earlier than 5.3 These switc hes d o not supp ort the use of multifunc tion analog telep hones (MFATs) Earlier than 2g.04.5.0.099These switc hes d o not sup p ort the Transfer Out of AUDIX feature 4. Even thoug h the TN2181 is a 16-p ort d ig ital station c irc uit p ac k, the DEFINITY AUDIX system will only sup port 12 voic e ports. Ad ministering the DEFINITY AUDIX system’s voic e p orts for TN2181 emulation requires the use of special p rocedures. For more information about voic e port administration, see Chap ter 2 , Chapter 3, Ap pend ix A, and Installation and Switc h Ad ministration for the DEFINITY AUDIX System Release 4.0, 585-300-122.5. Even thoug h the DEFINITY AUDIX system is emulating a c irc uit p ac k other than the TN568, the d ig ital p ort c irc uit p ac k the system is emulating will still reg ister a vintage numb er 48. This vintage numb er is uniq ue to DEFINITY AUDIX system Release 4.0. See the system desc ription for the c ustomer’s switc h for more information ab out ac c essing c irc uit p ac ks’ vintag e numb ers.
DEFINITY AUDIX System Release 4.0 System Description Pocket Reference 585-300-214 Issue 1 May 1999 Features and Compatibility 1-6 Compatibility Op erating in non-native mod e d oes not affec t sub sc rib ers’ or outsid e c allers’ use of the system. System ad ministrators, however, should b e aware that messages from the switc h, suc h as alarms, that refer to a TN754 or a TN2181 c irc uit p ac k the system is emulating may ac tually refer to the DEFINITY AUDIX system. NOTE: Luc ent Tec hnolog ies strong ly rec ommend s that the DEFINITY AUDIX system emulates a TN2181 dig ital port c irc uit p ac k in switc h versions 2 and later. A TN2181 emulation sup p orts a maximum of 12 voic e p orts, while a TN754 emulation only supp orts a maximum of 8 voic e p orts. If the DEFINITY AUDIX system emulates a TN2181 c irc uit pac k, system expansion may be easier. Switc h versions earlier than 2 d o not sup p ort TN2181 circuit pack emulation. Ta b l e 1 - 2 shows whic h switc hes and switc h software releases supp ort the DEFINITY AUDIX system and whether or not they sup port the system in native mod e. For more information ab out the TN568 c irc uit p ac k or the system’s op erations native and non-native mod e, see Chap ter 2 . DEFINITY AUDIX System Release 4.0 System Description Pocket Reference 585-300-214 Issue 1 May 1999 Design and Operation 2-2 TN568 Circuit Pack TN568 Circuit Pack The TN568 c irc uit p ac k hold s the systems main c irc uitry and p erforms system’s main p roc essing func tions, inc lud ing messag e routing , self-d iag nosis, and Alarm Orig ination. Port Board Emulation The TN568 holds the system’s voic e p orts. These voic e p orts c orresp ond to the voic e p orts on a TN754 or TN2181 c irc uit p ac k. DEFINITY switc h releases 7.1 and later rec og nize the TN568 c irc uit p ac k. However, the system’s voic e p orts interac t with the switc h like the voic e p orts on a TN754 or TN2181 c irc uit p ac k reg ard less of whether the system is op erating in native or non-native mod e. For more information ab out d ig ital p ort emulation, see Chap ter 1. Flashware The TN568 c irc uit p ac k uses flashware to store the sequenc es it uses to b oot the system and p rog rams sp ec ific to the TN568. Flashware are p rog rams that resid e on flash p rog rammab le read -only memory (FPROMs). FPROMs are hard ware that resid e on the TN568 and are p rotec ted from ac c id ental erases or rewrites. Cop ies of all the ac tive flashware p rog rams are also stored on the hard d isk. If the c ustomer installs software upg rad es or fixes, the new p rog ram is transferred from a MO d isk to the hard d isk. When the system reb oots, the new p rogram automatic ally transfers from the hard d isk to the FPROMs and rep lac es the existing flashware. Hard Disk Drive The hard d isk d rive stores the system’s AUDIX software, sub sc riber information and voic e messages. Voic e messag es that c ustomers may store on the system inc lud e voic e mail, p ersonal g reeting s, automated attend ants, and announc ement sets—the sets of automated, verbal instruc tions that c omp ose the system’s user interfac e. The hard d isk d rive p rovid es up to 100 hours of voic e storag e. The system c omes with a minimum of 10 hours of voic e storage. Customers c an p urc hase ad d itional voic e storag e in five-hour b loc ks.
DEFINITY AUDIX System Release 4.0 System Description Pocket Reference 585-300-214 Issue 1 May 1999 Design and Operation 2-3 Hard Disk Drive Software AUDIX software allows the DEFINITY AUDIX system to c ommunic ate with the switc h throug h a telep hone-like interfac e. This typ e of op eration is c alled set-typ e emulation. The c ommand s that sub sc rib ers and the switc h use to ac c ess the system’s software c orresp ond to the interfac e on a d ig ital telep hone, or set. The d ig ital set the system emulates d ep ends on whether the system is op erating in native or non-native mod e. In switc h releases earlier than 7.1, the DEFINITY AUDIX system emulates a 7405D d ig ital telephone. In switc h releases 7.1 and later, the system c ommunic ates with the switc h using an ADX16D set-typ e interfac e, throug h whic h the switc h c an rec ognize the system’s AUDIX software. 1 Networking Bec ause of its telep hone-like interfac e, the system c an send and rec eive messages from other voic e messag ing systems as a telephone c an. AUDIX software help s the system to c ommunic ate effic iently with other AUDIX systems. The DEFINITY AUDIX system has two networking op tions that use these c apabilities for message exc hange: nAMIS Analog Networking nDig ital Networking AMIS Analog Networking AMIS is a stand ard p rotoc ol among voic e messag ing systems. AMIS Analog Networking uses the Messag e Delivery feature to send messages to sub sc ribers on other voic e messag ing systems that use the AMIS p rotoc ol. AMIS Analog Networking sends a message throug h the system’s voic e p orts muc h like a telephone c all. The rec ipient’s voic e mail system rec eives the messag e as it would rec eive any other voic e messag e and stores it in the rec ip ient’s voic e mailbox. Other voic e messag ing systems c an send messages to the DEFINITY AUDIX system in the same way. Digital Networking Dig ital Networking is an effic ient way for DEFINITY AUDIX, AUDIX R1, INTUITY, and Interc hang e systems to c ommunic ate with eac h other without using the systems’ voic e p orts. The DEFINITY AUDIX system has one Dig ital Networking p ort that c an be dedic ated solely to Dig ital 1. For more information ab out d ig ital station emulations, see Installation and Switc h Administration for the DEFINITY AUDIX System Release 4.0, 585-300-122.
DEFINITY AUDIX System Release 4.0 System Description Pocket Reference 585-300-214 Issue 1 May 1999 Design and Operation 2-4 Hard Disk Drive Networking features. In its maximum c onfig uration, the DEFINITY AUDIX system c an c onnec t through this Digital Networking c hannel to up to 100 remote systems, or nod es.2 Dig ital Networking offers several ad vantag es over AMIS Analog Networking : nDig ital Networking is more sec ure than AMIS Analog Networking. nDig ital Networking uses Luc ent Tec hnolog ies’ Dig ital Communic ations Protoc ol (DCP) to send sub sc rib er p rofiles and messag e status information along with messag es, while AMIS d oes not send this information. nDig ital Networking messages have higher voic e q uality than AMIS messag es bec ause Dig ital Networking uses CELP enc od ing. There is one imp ortant c onsid eration, however, for c ustomers who want to use Digital Networking . If c ustomers use Digital Networking, the DEFINITY AUDIX system will have a maximum of 8 voic e ports, rather than 12. Ta b l e 2 - 1 shows the maximum number of voic e p orts the DEFINTIY AUDIX system c an have with and without Dig ital Networking . High-speed Digital Networking Connections The DEFINTIY AUDIX system offers three types of Digital Networking c onfig urations: DCP Mod e 1, DCP Mod e 2, and DCP Mod e 3. DCP Mod e 1 and DCP Mod e 3 c onnec tions are hig h-sp eed Dig ital Networking c onnec tions. DCP Mod e 1 and DCP Mod e 3 c onnec tions require hig h-sp eed fac ilities to op erate, b ut these c onnec tions offer ad vantag es where there is heavy voic e messag ing traffic among c ustomer sites. These hig h-speed Dig ital Networking c onnec tions c an ac c ommod ate the maximum numb ers of loc al sub sc rib ers (2000) and remote sub sc rib ers (100,000) the system allows. 2.
