ENGINE DESCRIPTION ANDOPERATION 15 OPERATION The 300TDiisa4cylinder, watercooled, turbocharged dieselengine withacapacity of2.5 litres.The cast ironcylinder blockisintegral withthe crankcase andincorporates directbored cylinders. The crankshaft iscarried in5main bearings, end-float beingcontrolled bythrust washers which are positioned onboth sides ofthe centre main bearing.The flywheel/drive platehousing isan aluminium alloy casting secured tothe rear ofthe cylinder block, italso forms themounting forthe starter motor. Aplugged aperture inthe housing allows access forthe insertion ofthe timing pin. The aluminium alloycylinder headcarries a conventional rockershaftandrockers, operating 2 valves percylinder viacamshaft followersandpush rods from asingle camshaft, supported inthe cylinder blockby4bearings anddriven byagear and toothed beltfrom thecrankshaft. Alobe formed between the2inner bearing journals provides drive for the fuel liftpump andanother lobe,between the2 drive endjournals provides driveforthe brake servo pump. Camshaft end-floatiscontrolled byathrust plate bolted tothe cylinder block. Graphite coated,aluminium alloypistons arefitted with 2compression andanoilcontrol ringand are secured tothe connecting rodsbysemi-floating gudgeon pinswhich areaninterference fitin the small endbush. Aswirl chamber isincorporated in the piston crowntofacilitate combustion. The timing caseconsists ofcast aluminium alloy front andrear covers whichhouse theoilpump, crankshaft andcamshaft frontoilseals andwhich also carry thefuel injection pumpanddrive beltidler pulley. Housed withinthetiming casehousing isthe crankshaft gearwhich provides driveforthe camshaft andfuelinjection pumpgearsviaarubber toothed belt.
