    							Name Product number
    HP Designjet T790 24-in Stand Q6663A
    HP Jetdirect 635n IPv6/IPsec Print Server J7961A
    Introduction to the accessories
    PostScript upgrade
The PostScript upgrade enables a T790 or T1300 to print the same file types that a T790 PS or T1300
PS can print. The PostScript upgrade can be plugged into the printers USB host.
    Spindle
With extra spindles, you can change rapidly from one paper type to another.
    Jetdirect print server
Jetdirect print servers support extra connectivity and security options beyond those provided in the
standard Ethernet interface built into the printer.
External hard disk (T790 PS and T1300 series)
The external hard disk replaces the printers internal hard disk as a repository of personal data (the job
queue, including temporary files, accounting and so on). The external hard disk can be removed and
stored in a secure place when the printer has been turned off.
You cannot use the external hard disk to share files between HP Designjets or to download files from
    any computer to the printer.
For more information about the use of this accessory, see
    Troubleshooting on page 149.
CAUTION:The external hard disk has been designed to be used with HP Designjets only. It may be
damaged if you attempt to connect it to other devices.
NOTE:The printers USB device port is incompatible with the external hard disk. While the external
hard disk is connected, the USB device port is disabled, it is not recognized by your computers plug &
play subsystem and you cannot send jobs from your computer to the USB port. However, the USB host
port still works, and you can print jobs from a USB flash drive. If you require a point-to-point connection
between your computer and printer, without network infrastructure, please use a standard Ethernet
cable and install the driver from the HP Start-up Kit DVD in network mode.
    Installation
1.Attach the hard disk holder to the left leg of the stand using the adhesive patch on the holder
    (press firmly).
    ENWWIntroduction to the accessories
    147

2.Place the external hard disk into the holder and connect the USB cable to it as shown.
3.Ensure that the printer is turned on.
    4.
    At the front panel, press
, then , then Setup > External hard disk > Install
    external hard disk.
5.The front panel displays Connect external hard disk or press Cancel to abort.
    6.
Connect the other end of the USB cable to the rear of the printer where you see this symbol:
7.The front panel displays Select Secure Disk Erase Level or Cancel to abort.
8.Choose the SDE level to be applied to the internal hard disk.
Secure Disk Erase provides three different levels of security:
●Insecure Mode or Non-Secure Fast Erase: All pointers to the information are erased.
The information itself remains on the hard disk until the disk space it occupies is needed for
other purposes, and it is then overwritten. While it remains on the disk, it is difficult for most
people to access, but may be accessed using software designed for the purpose. This is the
normal method in which files are erased on most computer systems; it is the fastest method
    but the least secure.
●1-Pass Mode or Level 1: All pointers to the information are erased, and the information
itself is also overwritten with a fixed character pattern. This method is slower than Insecure
Mode/Non-Secure Fast Erase, but more secure. It may still be possible to access fragments of
the erased information by using special tools to detect residual magnetic traces.
●5-Pass Mode or Level 5: All pointers to the information are erased, and the information
itself is repetitively overwritten using an algorithm designed to eliminate any residual traces.
This is the slowest method, but the most secure; it meets the US Department of Defense

5220-22.m requirements for clearing and sanitization of disk media. This is the default
security level when using Secure Disk Erase. If you choose this level, the process can take up
    to six hours.

    7.Remove the external hard disk.
    8.The printer restarts.
    Troubleshooting
●The use of the external hard disk by any device other than an HP Designjet is not supported and
may cause severe damage to the hard disk, which is not covered by the warranty.
●If the external hard disk has been previously inserted into a different HP Designjet, the front panel
displays: External hard disk not valid for this machine. Power off, plug in the
correct hard disk and power on again.
    ENWWIntroduction to the accessories
    149

If you use an external hard disk with one HP Designjet and then want to connect it to another:
◦If the HP Designjet has already had an external hard disk installed, you must uninstall it from
the first HP Designjet and then install it on the HP Designjet you want to use.
◦If the HP Designjet has no external hard disk installed, the installation process starts and the
contents of the external hard disk are deleted.
●The printers USB device port is incompatible with the external hard disk. While the external hard
disk is connected, the USB device port is disabled, it is not recognized by your computers plug &
play subsystem and you cannot send jobs from your computer to the USB port. However, the USB
host port still works, and you can print jobs from a USB flash drive.
If you require a point-to-point connection between your computer and printer, without network
infrastructure, please use a standard Ethernet cable and install the driver from the HP Start-up Kit
    DVD in network mode.
If you later disconnect the external disk drive, and resume use of the internal disk drive, you will
be able to use the USB device port again.
●The external hard disk should not be removed while the printer is on. If you remove it, the front
panel displays the following error message (64:1:01): USB HDD accessory disconnected.
Please reconnect it and restart the printer.
If you turn on the printer while the external hard disk is not connected, the same message is
    displayed.
●If the external hard disk is lost or broken, you must reconfigure the printer to use the internal hard
    disk.
Turn on the printer. Wait until you see all of the fixed icons at the left and right of the front panel
displayed simultaneously. Then press three icons in the correct sequence:
    , then , then .
The front panel displays: Machine configured to use external hard disk. Do you want
to revert the configuration to internal hard disk? Press OK to continue.
    Press OK.
The front panel displays: Machine reconfigured to use internal hard disk. Press OK to
    reboot the machine.
Press OK. The printer restarts, and you can then use the printer with its internal hard drive.

The paper cannot be loaded successfully
    ●Ensure no paper is loaded.
●Ensure the paper is far enough inside the printer, you should feel the printer grab the paper.
●Do not attempt to straighten the paper during the aligning process, unless instructed to do so by
the front-panel display. The printer automatically attempts to straighten the paper.
●The paper may be crumpled, or warped, or may have irregular edges.
    General unsuccessful roll load issues
●If the paper does not load, the leading edge of the paper may not be straight or clean and needs
to be trimmed. Remove the initial 2 cm (1 in) from the roll and try again. This may be necessary
even with a new roll of paper.
●Ensure the roll ends are tight against the spindle ends.
●Check that the spindle is correctly inserted.
●Check that the paper is correctly loaded on the spindle, and that it loads over the roll towards
    you.
●Check that all roll end plugs have been removed.
●Check that the paper is wound tightly on the roll.
●Do not touch the roll or paper at during the alignment process.
●When loading a roll on the T1300 series, the roll cover must remain open until the front panel
    prompts you to close it.
●When loading the upper roll (the only roll on the T790), avoid inserting the paper into the cut
    sheet slot.
