Adding or replacing memory 
modules
Your notebook uses memory modules called SO-DIMMs (Small 
Outline Dual Inline Memory Modules). The modules are 
available in various capacities and any module can be placed 
in any slot.
To add or replace memory modules:  
1Follow the guidelines under “Preventing static electricity 
discharge” on page 102.
2Turn off your notebook.
3Disconnect the AC adapter, modem cable, and network 
cable.

6Loosen the memory bay cover screws (these screws 
cannot be removed).
7Use the thumb notch to lift the memory bay cover, then 
remove it. Be careful not to break off the tabs located 
on the end of the cover opposite the thumb notch.
8If you are removing a module, gently press outward on 
the clip at each end of the memory module until the 
module tilts upward.

9Pull the memory module out of the slot.
10Hold the new or replacement module at a 30-degree 
angle and press it into the empty memory slot. This 
module is keyed so it can only be inserted in one 
direction. If the module does not fit, make sure that the 
notch in the module lines up with the tab in the memory 
bay.
11Replace the memory bay cover, then tighten the cover 
screws.
12Insert the battery, then turn your notebook over.

Replacing a hard drive kit
If you would like more hard drive capacity, you can replace an 
original drive with a higher-capacity drive.
To replace the hard drive kit:  
1Create a Drivers and Applications Recovery disc using the 
Gateway Recovery Center. For more information, see 
“Recovering pre-installed software and drivers using 
recovery discs” on page 93.
2Back up any data you want to transfer to the new hard 
drive. For more information, see “Backing up files”...

10Using the plastic tab, slide the old hard drive, then 
remove it.
11If your new hard drive already includes the hard drive 
bracket, go to step 16.
-OR-
If you need to move the hard drive bracket from your old 
hard drive to your new hard drive, go to step 12.

12Remove the screws that secure the hard drive to the hard 
drive bracket.
13Remove the bracket from the old drive.
14Insert the new drive label side up onto the bracket so the 
screw holes line up.

15Replace the screws that secure the bracket to the drive.
16Slide the new hard drive kit into your notebook.
17Replace the cover, then tighten the screws.
18Insert the battery, then turn your notebook over.

an optional RAID” on page 52, then go to step 23.

Safety guidelines
While troubleshooting your notebook, follow these safety 
guidelines:
Never remove the memory bay cover or hard drive bay 
cover while your notebook is turned on, while the 
battery is installed, and while the modem cable, network 
cable, and AC power adapter are connected to your 
notebook.
Make sure that you are correctly grounded before 
accessing internal components.
