www.gateway.com 103 Adding or replacing memory modules Your notebook uses memory modules called SO-DIMMs (Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Modules). The modules are available in various capacities and any module can be placed in any slot. To add or replace memory modules: 1Follow the guidelines under “Preventing static electricity discharge” on page 102. 2Turn off your notebook. 3Disconnect the AC adapter, modem cable, and network cable. 4Disconnect all peripheral devices connected to the notebook and remove any Express and memory cards. 5Tu rn yo u r n ote bo o k ove r so th e bo tto m i s fa ci n g u p, th e n remove the battery. CHAPTER 8: Upgrading Your Notebook 104 6Loosen the memory bay cover screws (these screws cannot be removed). 7Use the thumb notch to lift the memory bay cover, then remove it. Be careful not to break off the tabs located on the end of the cover opposite the thumb notch. 8If you are removing a module, gently press outward on the clip at each end of the memory module until the module tilts upward. www.gateway.com 105 9Pull the memory module out of the slot. 10Hold the new or replacement module at a 30-degree angle and press it into the empty memory slot. This module is keyed so it can only be inserted in one direction. If the module does not fit, make sure that the notch in the module lines up with the tab in the memory bay. 11Replace the memory bay cover, then tighten the cover screws. 12Insert the battery, then turn your notebook over. 13Connect the power adapter, modem cable, and network cable. 14Reconnect all peripheral devices and replace any Express and memory cards.
CHAPTER 8: Upgrading Your Notebook 106 Replacing a hard drive kit If you would like more hard drive capacity, you can replace an original drive with a higher-capacity drive. To replace the hard drive kit: 1Create a Drivers and Applications Recovery disc using the Gateway Recovery Center. For more information, see “Recovering pre-installed software and drivers using recovery discs” on page 93. 2Back up any data you want to transfer to the new hard drive. For more information, see “Backing up files” in your online User Guide. 3Follow the guidelines under “Preventing static electricity discharge” on page 102. 4Turn off your notebook. 5Disconnect the AC adapter, modem cable, and network cable. 6Disconnect all peripheral devices connected to the notebook and remove any Express and memory cards. CHAPTER 8: Upgrading Your Notebook 108 10Using the plastic tab, slide the old hard drive, then remove it. 11If your new hard drive already includes the hard drive bracket, go to step 16. -OR- If you need to move the hard drive bracket from your old hard drive to your new hard drive, go to step 12.

CHAPTER 8: Upgrading Your Notebook 110 15Replace the screws that secure the bracket to the drive. 16Slide the new hard drive kit into your notebook. 17Replace the cover, then tighten the screws. 18Insert the battery, then turn your notebook over. 19Connect the power adapter, modem cable, and network cable. 20If your notebook uses RAID, read the section “Setting up an optional RAID” on page 52, then go to step 23. -OR- If your notebook does not use RAID and the drive you replaced was the C drive, go to step 21 to install Windows. -OR- If your notebook does not use RAID and the drive you replaced was not the C drive, complete any instructions that came with your drive regarding partitioning and formatting the drive, then go to step 23. 21Turn on your notebook, open the DVD drive, insert the Windows DVD, close the DVD drive, then restart your notebook. 22When the prompt “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD” appears, press any key on your keyboard and follow the on-screen instructions. As part of the process you may be prompted to insert your Drivers and Applications Recovery disc. 23Reconnect all peripheral devices and replace any Express and memory cards.

CHAPTER 9: Troubleshooting 112 Safety guidelines While troubleshooting your notebook, follow these safety guidelines: Never remove the memory bay cover or hard drive bay cover while your notebook is turned on, while the battery is installed, and while the modem cable, network cable, and AC power adapter are connected to your notebook. Make sure that you are correctly grounded before accessing internal components. After you complete any maintenance tasks where you remove the memory bay cover or hard drive bay cover, make sure that you replace the cover, reinstall any screws, then replace the battery before you start your notebook. First steps If you have problems with your notebook, try these things first: Make sure that the AC power adapter is connected to your notebook and an AC outlet and that the AC outlet is supplying power. Make sure that the p ower cord is firmly con nected to the AC power adapter. If you use a power strip or surge protector, make sure that it is turned on. Warning Do not try to troubleshoot your problem if power cords or plugs are damaged, if your notebook was dropped, or if the case was damaged. Instead, unplug your notebook and contact a qualified computer technician.
