101 Using the audio/video controls www.gateway.com Using the Gateway M505 Music Player You can use the audio system on your notebook to play .MP3 and .WMA files stored on CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, Secured Digital memory cards, or the hard drive while your notebook is turned off. You can insert discs and SD memory cards into the notebook and play them using the Audio Player controls. To play songs stored on your hard drive, you must store the files on the D: hard drive, create a playlist, then use the Audio Player controls. To create the playlist for songs on the hard drive: 1Turn on your notebook. 2Use My Computer or Windows Explorer to copy or move the music files you want to play to your D: hard drive. 3Click Start, All Programs, SMI Bluebird Playlist Editor, then click Bluebird Playlist Editor. The Playlist Editor window opens. 4Click Create. The Create new/Change existing dialog box opens. 5Type the name of the playlist in the Playlist Name box, then click OK. 6Click Add Audio. The Open dialog box opens. Help and SupportFor more information about copying or moving files in Windows XP, click Start, then click Help and Support. Type the keyword copying files and folders or moving files and folders in the Search box , then click the arrow.
102 Chapter 7: Using Multimedia www.gateway.com 7Click the file you want to add to your playlist (hold down the CTRL key when you click to select multiple files), then click OK. The songs appear in the Song Name column. 8If you have more than one playlist, the playlist at the top of the Playlist Name column is the one that will be played. To set a different playlist to be the current playlist, click the playlist, then click Set Current. The highlighted playlist moves to the top of the Playlist Name column. To play your playlist, CD-R, DVD-R, or SD memory card: 1Turn off your notebook. 2If you are playing a CD-R, DVD-R, or SD memory card, insert the disc or card. 3Press the AV control panel Power button to turn on the audio system. 4Press the Source button to select the location of your music files. It may take a few moments for the notebook to recognize a disc. 5Press the Play button. The track number counter will count from 01 to 99. It will start over at 00 if you have more than 99 songs in your playlist or on a disc. ImportantYou cannot specify the order of the songs if you use the CTRL key method. To specify the song order, add one song at a time to your playlist.

Identifying drive types Your Gateway notebook may contain one of the following drive types. Look on the front of the drive for one of the following logos: If your drive has this logo...This is your drive type...Use your drive for... Combination DVD/CD-RW drive installing programs, playing audio CDs, playing DVDs, accessing data, and recording music and data to CD-R or CD-RW discs. You cannot use this drive to create DVDs. For more information, see“Creating CDs and DVDs using Nero Express” on page 117. Combination DVD-RW/CD-RW driveinstalling programs, playing audio CDs, playing DVDs, accessing data, recording music and data to CD-R or CD-RW discs, and recording video and data to DVD-R or DVD-RW discs. The drive will lock the disc into place and pull it inside. ImportantSome music CDs have copy protection software. You may not be able to play these CDs on your notebook. 105 Using the DVD/CD-RW or DVD-RW/CD-RW drive www.gateway.com To eject a CD or DVD: ■Press the eject button. The drive will push the disc outside. ImportantWhen you place a single-sided disc in the tray, make sure that the label side is facing up. If the disc has two playable sides, place the disc so the name of the side you want to play is facing up.
106 Chapter 7: Using Multimedia www.gateway.com Listening to CDs You can use the DVD/CD-RW or DVD-RW/CD-RW drive on your notebook to listen to music CDs. Use the Windows Media Player to listen to CDs. For more information about using the Windows Media Player, click Help. You can also use the Gateway M505 Music Player or MusicMatch to listen to CDs. For more information, see “Using the Gateway M505 Music Player” on page 101 and “Using MUSICMATCH” on page 108. You can use the audio buttons on the front of your notebook to control how you play your CDs. For more information, see “Using the audio/video controls” on page 97. To play a CD: 1Insert a CD into the DVD/CD-RW or DVD-RW/CD-RW drive. 2If a dialog box opens with a list of CD players, click Windows Media Player. The Windows Media Player opens. - OR - If a dialog box does not open with a list of CD players, click Start, All Programs , then click Windows Media Player. The Windows Media Player opens. ImportantSome music CDs have copy protection software. You may not be able to play these CDs on your notebook.

Playing CDs You can use the MUSICMATCH program to play music CDs. To play a music CD in Windows XP: 1To have MUSICMATCH automatically list the album, artist, and track names of your CD, connect to the Internet before inserting your CD. 2Insert the music CD into the DVD/CD-RW or DVD-RW/CD-RW drive on your notebook. The musicmatch window opens, the CD begins playing, and the names of the music tracks appear in the playlist area. - OR - If a dialog box does not open, click Start, All Programs, MUSICMATCH, then click MUSICMATCH Jukebox. The musicmatch window opens, the CD begins playing, and the names of the music tracks appear in the playlist area.
110 Chapter 7: Using Multimedia www.gateway.com Creating MP3 music files Using MUSICMATCH, you can copy the tracks from a music CD to your notebook’s hard drive as MP3 files. MP3 (MPEG Layer 3) is a standard for digitally compressing high-fidelity music into compact files without noticeably sacrificing quality. MP3 files end in the file extension .MP3. To create MP3 files: 1To have MUSICMATCH automatically list the album, artist, and track names of your CD, then use that information for naming and storing your MP3 files, connect to the Internet before inserting your CD. 2Insert a music CD into your DVD/CD-RW or DVD-RW/CD-RW drive. ImportantSome music CDs have copy protection software. You cannot copy tracks from these CDs.
