To adjust specific volume levels: 1Click Start, then click Control Panel. The Control Panel window opens. If your Control Panel is in Category View, click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices. 2Click/Double-click the Adjust the system volume or Sounds and Audio Devices . 93 Recording and playing audio www.gateway.com Recording and playing audio Use the following instructions to make an audio recording by speaking into the built-in microphone or an optional external microphone. To make an audio recording: 1Plug a microphone into the Microphone jack on your notebook. For the location of the Microphone jack, see “Back” on page 5. -OR- Use the built-in microphone located on the LCD panel. Microphone

The Sound Recorder opens. 3Click (record), then speak into the microphone. 4When you finish recording, click (stop). 5Click File, then click Save As. The Save As dialog box opens. 6Name the recording, specify the location where you want to save the recording, then click Save. The recording is saved. To play an audio recording in Sound Recorder: 1Open the Sound Recorder. 2Click File, then click Open. For more information about the using the Windows Media Player, click Help. To play a file using the Windows Media Player: 1Click Start, All Programs, then click Windows Media Player. Through this AV control panel, you can play most of your audio/video CD, DVD, MP3, and SD media. Locating the controls Component Icon Description Source Selects the playback source (DVD/CD-RW or DVD-RW/CD-RW drive, hard drive, or SD memory card. Play/Pause Start or pause playing. Fast rewind/ fast forwardUse this dial to fast rewind or fast forward the track currently playing. Back Skip back one song or track. Next Skip ahead one song or track. LCD display Displays the current media status. Power Turns the AV control panel on or off. Volume down Press to decrease the volume. Volume up Press to increase the volume. Mute Mutes the sound coming out of the speakers. Important The volume buttons control the volume level of the built-in speakers and headphones plugged into the headphone jack. The play/pause, back, next, and stop buttons may control multimedia programs such as Windows Media Player, Windows CD Player, MusicMatch, and the InterVideo DVD Player. Component Icon Description
99 Using the audio/video controls www.gateway.com Understanding the AV controls LCD panel The AV controls LCD panel displays all the information pertaining to the audio/video media that is being played in your notebook. Component Description Hard drive Indicates a file on the hard drive is playing. Audio CD Indicates a CD is playing. Video CD/DVD Indicates a DVD or video CD is playing. Track number Displays which track is playing. Elapsed time Displays the amount of time the track has been playing. Volume/mute Displays the volume level and indicates if the sound has been muted. SD memory card Indicates a file on the SD memory card is playing. CD playback Indicates that a CD is playing. The subwoofer carries low-frequency sound to give a bass boost and create a rumbling effect for certain special effects sounds, such as explosions and trains. To turn the subwoofer on: ■Slide the subwoofer switch to the on position to turn the subwoofer on. MP3 playback Indicates that an MP3 file is playing. Playback progress Shows the progress of the playback. Repeat Indicates if the media being played is repeat none, repeat one track, or repeat all tracks. Component Description
