Replacing the hard drive
If you would like more hard drive capacity, you can replace your original drive 
with a higher-capacity drive.
To replace the hard drive:
1Back up any data you want to transfer to the new hard drive. For more 
information, see “Backing up files” on page 207.
2Follow the instructions under “Preventing static electricity discharge” on 
page 226.

by inserting a flat-blade screw driver in the small groove in the plastic.
10Pull the hard drive away from the connector at a 45° angle and remove it 
from the notebook.
11Insert the new hard drive into your notebook at a 45° angle and press the 
left side into place.
12Insert the hard drive cable directly into the connector.

13Rotate the brown bar on the connector 90° down to secure the cable to 
the connector.
14Replace the hard drive cover.
15Replace the screws that secure the hard drive cover to your notebook.
16Insert the battery and turn your notebook over.
17Connect the power adapter and modem and network cables, then turn on 
your notebook.

Safety guidelines
While troubleshooting your notebook, follow these safety guidelines:
■Never remove the memory bay cover or hard drive if your notebook is 
turned on, the battery is installed, or while the modem cable, network 
cable, or AC power adapter are connected to the notebook.
■Make sure that you are correctly grounded before accessing internal

First steps
If you have problems with your notebook, try these things first:
■Make sure that the AC power adapter is connected to your notebook and 
an AC outlet and that the AC outlet is supplying power.
■If you use a power strip or surge protector, make sure that it is turned on.
■If a peripheral device (such as a keyboard or mouse) does not work, make 
sure that all connections are secure.
■Make sure that your hard drive is not full.

Your notebook does not recognize a disc
■The disc may not be seated correctly in the tray. When you place a disc 
on the tray, make sure that you press the disc firmly onto the spindle so 
the retainers hold the disc in place.
■Make sure that the disc label is facing up, then try again.
■If you are trying to play a DVD, make sure that you have a DVD drive.
