Printing Special Photos51 Note: Assigning a profile to the image doesn’t alter the image data, only the interpretation of the data by your software and how it appears on your monitor and in a printout. This is the best way to improve the color balance and contrast in your image. Selecting Your Print Settings 1. Select File > Print or Print with Preview . 2. If you see the window on the right, click More Options or Show More Options . Then select Color Management from the pop-up menu. 3. Click the Page Setup button to change the page size and orientation settings as necessary, then click OK. 4. Under Color Handling in Photoshop CS2, select Let Photoshop Determine Colors . In CS3, select Photoshop Manages Colors. 5. Under Print Space: Profile or Options: Printer Profile, select a profile for your printer and the paper you’ll use for the print. If you’re printing with Epson Premium ICC profiles, select the profile that matches the print quality you want to use. Note: The Epson Premium ICC profiles can be identified with the suffix “.icc,” for example, “SPR1800 PrmGlsy BstPhoto.icc.” Photoshop CS and 7 Photoshop CS3
52Printing Special Photos 6. As the Print Space: Intent setting, select Relative Colorimetric. Note: If your image contains very saturated colors, select Perceptual. This reduces the color saturation so that the colors fit within the printer’s color gamut. 7. Select the Black Point Compensation checkbox. Printing Your Color-Managed Photo 1. Click the Print button. 2. Select Stylus Photo R1800 from the Printer menu. 3. Select Print Settings from the pop-up menu. 4. Select the Media Type setting for the paper you’ll use for the printer. 5. Click the Advanced button. 6. If you are using an Epson Premium ICC profile, set the Print Quality setting to match your profile.

If you are printing on any of the following glossy media, make sure Gloss Optimizer is set to On: ■Ultra Premium Photo Paper Glossy or Ultra Premium Glossy Photo Paper ■Premium Photo Paper Glossy or Premium Glossy Photo Paper ■Premium Photo Paper Semi-gloss or Premium Semigloss Photo Paper ■Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster or Premium Luster Photo Paper ■PremierArt Water Resistant Canvas 8. Turn off the High Speed option. 9. Select Color Management from the pop-up menu. 10. Select Off (No Color Adjustment). Note: Make sure that you select Off (No Color Adjustment). If you don’t, the printer driver will apply additional correction to the image data, producing inaccurate results. 11. Click Print to print your photo. IMPORTANT! Select Off (No Color Adjustment)
54Printing Special Photos Windows Opening Your Image 1. Open Adobe Photoshop. 2. Select Edit > Color Settings. 3. Select U.S. Prepress Defaults or North American Prepress 2 from the Settings pull-down menu. This sets Adobe RGB (1998) as the RGB working space and activates warning messages for profile mismatches and missing profiles. Then click OK. 4. Open the photo you want to print. 5. If you see a message like the one below, select Use the embedded profile (instead of the working space) option and click OK. It is generally best to use the embedded profile. 6. If you see a message like the one below, select Assign working RGB: Adobe RGB (1998) and click OK.
Printing Special Photos55 7. When your image appears, evaluate the color balance and contrast as displayed on your monitor. If they need improvement, select Image > Mode > Assign Profile (for Photoshop CS and 7) or Edit > Assign Profile (for Photoshop CS2 and CS3). Select one of the following as the Profile setting: ■A different RGB working space (or Profile), such as ColorMatch RGB or sRGB IEC61966-2.1 ■A scanner profile for your scanner ■A camera profile for your digital camera Also click the Preview box so you can see the effects of your profile choice on the screen. Printing Special Photos57 Printing Your Color-Managed Photo 1. Click the Print button. 2. Make sure your printer is selected, and click the Properties or Preferences button. 3. If you are using an Epson Premium ICC profile, set the Quality Option setting to match your profile. 4. Select the Type setting for the paper you’ll use for the print. 5. Click the Advanced button and click Continue. 6. Turn off the High Speed and Edge Smoothing options, if they are available. 7. Select the ICM button under Color Management, then check the Off (No Color Adjustment) box. Note: Make sure that you select Off (No Color Adjustment). If you don’t, the printer driver will apply additional correction to the image data, producing inaccurate results. IMPORTANT! Select ICM, then check the Off (No Color Adjustment) box

If you are printing on any of the following glossy media, make sure the Gloss checkbox is selected: ■Ultra Premium Photo Paper Glossy or Ultra Premium Glossy Photo Paper ■Premium Photo Paper Glossy or Premium Glossy Photo Paper ■Premium Photo Paper Semi-gloss or Premium Semigloss Photo Paper ■Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster or Premium Luster Photo Paper ■PremierArt Water Resistant Canvas 9. Click OK. 10. Click OK or Print to print. Solving Color Management Problems If you selected the wrong combination of source profile, printer profile, and color management settings, you’ll get unexpected results. Try these solutions: ■If your printed image is darker than expected and/or has a strong yellow-brown cast, you probably turned off color management in both Photoshop and the Epson printer driver. Return to the Print or Print with Preview instructions for Adobe Photoshop on page 51 (for Mac OS X) or page 55 (for Windows). Make sure the Source Space - Document option is not set to Untagged RGB. Also make sure you selected the correct profile for your printer in the Print Space - Profile menu. ■If your printed image is lighter than expected and/or has a strong light blue cast, you probably turned on color management in both Photoshop and the Epson printer driver. Return to the instructions on page 53 (for Mac OS X) or page 57 (for Windows). Make sure to select Off (No Color Adjustment) in the printer driver Advanced screen or Color Management menu to turn off color management in your Epson printer driver.
Printing Special Photos59 Printing a Custom Profile Test Target Follow the steps in this section to create and print individual custom profile test targets for each paper type you plan to print on. When you’re ready to print the test target, follow the steps for your operating system below. Mac OS X 1. Open Adobe Photoshop and open the profile target file provided by your profile-building software manufacturer. 2. If you see a missing profile screen, select Leave as is (don’t color manage). 3. Select File > Print with Preview. 4. In the Print window, click the Show More Options checkbox (if necessary), then choose Color Management in the pop-up menu. 5. Select No Color Management in Photoshop CS2 and CS3 or Same as Source as the Print Space: Profile setting in Photoshop CS and 7.
60Printing Special Photos 6. Click the Page Setup button. 7. Select Stylus Photo R1800 from the Format for menu. 8. Select the appropriate Paper Size and Orientation settings, then click OK. 9. Click the Print button. 10. Select your printer from the Printer menu, then select Print Settings from the pop-up menu. 11. Select the Media Type setting for the profile you’re printing. 12. Click the Advanced button. 13. Select your desired level as the Print Quality setting. 14. Turn off the High Speed option.
