Printing From Start to Finish31 Basic Printing With Mac OS X Follow the steps below to print a document or image on a Macintosh® using the basic printer settings. For roll paper printing, see page 39. For borderless printing, see page 45. For CD/DVD printing, see page 65. Note: Make sure you added your printer in the Printer Setup Utility or Print Center, as described on the Start Here sheet. 1. From the File menu, select Page Setup. 2. Open the Format for menu and select your printer. Select Stylus Photo R1800 Select your document or image orientation

Choose the paper size for the paper you loaded, then select the source setting from the submenu for that size. ■For prints on paper loaded in the sheet feeder with borders around the image, select just a paper size in the menu and submenu. ■For borderless prints on paper loaded in the sheet feeder, select a size with Sheet Feeder - Borderless as the source. ■For prints with borders around the image on paper loaded in the single sheet guide, select a size with Manual - Roll as the source. ■For borderless prints on paper loaded in the single sheet guide, select a size with Manual - Roll (Borderless) as the source. For roll paper printing instructions, see page 39. For CD/DVD printing instructions, see page 65. Note: For more information on borderless printing, see page 45. Caution: When printing non-borderless print jobs using a custom paper size, make sure the selected size matches the paper you loaded and is within the printable area for your printer. For example, never choose a paper size wider than your printer’s sheet feeder or longer than your paper length. Choose a source setting Choose the paper size
Printing From Start to Finish33 4. Select the direction you want your image or document to print as the Orientation setting. Select for vertical orientation, for horizontal facing right, or for horizontal facing left. 5. Click OK. 6. Select Print from the File menu. You see a screen like this: 7. Open the Printer menu and select Stylus Photo R1800. 8. Select Print Settings from the pop-up menu. You see your basic print settings. Note: In certain programs you may need to select Advanced before you can select Print Settings. Click here and select Print Settings Select Stylus Photo R1800 Select Quality or Speed Select your paper type (see page 38) Select Automatic mode Select the ink color
34Printing From Start to Finish 9. Select the type of paper you loaded as the Media Type setting. See page 38. Note: If you can’t choose your paper type, check your Page Setup settings to make sure you selected the correct paper size and source. (See page 32.) 10. For the ink setting, select Color (for color documents and black and white photographs) or Black (for black text documents). 11. Select Automatic as the Mode setting for the best results printing basic documents or images. (For instructions on using Advanced mode, see page 36.) 12. Move the slider to the Quality setting to print images or documents using higher print quality, or to the Speed setting for faster printing. Note: For more information about printer settings, click Help. 13. You can also choose these options in the pop-up menu: ■Copies & Pages, to select the number of copies or a page range ■Layout, to select page layout options ■Output Options, to save your print job as a PDF file ■Scheduler, to specify a time for a document to print ■Paper Handling, to reverse page order and set other page options ■ColorSync, to select Quartz® filters through ColorSync® ■Color Management, to select ColorSync, adjust the color controls, change the gamma setting, or turn off color adjustments by the printer software (see page 37 for color management details) ■Expansion (if you selected a Borderless option as the paper size/source setting), adjusts the borderless image size to remove borders completely ■Extension Setting, select Thick media here to correct ink smearing when printing on thick paper ■Summary, to view a list of all your selections 14. Click Print.
Printing From Start to Finish35 Caution: Don’t pause printing or respond to ink messages when your printer is printing. This may cause your printer to pause and leave an uneven surface on your printout. If ink is low, wait until printing finishes before checking ink levels or replacing a cartridge. If you replace an ink cartridge in the middle of a print job, the quality of your printout may decline. For best results, check ink levels and replace cartridges, if necessary, before printing large or high-resolution print jobs. 15. To monitor the progress of your print job, click your printer’s icon or the Print Center icon when it appears in the dock. Then double-click Stylus Photo R1800 . You see this screen: 16. Monitor the progress of your print job or do one of the following: ■Click the print job, then click Delete to delete the job ■Click the print job, then click Hold to pause printing ■Click a print job marked “Hold” and click Resume to resume printing ■If multiple print jobs are listed, click a print job, then click the Priority arrow as necessary to reorder the jobs 17. When you’re finished, close your printer’s status window (OS X 10.4 and 10.3) or Print Center (OS X 10.2).
36Printing From Start to Finish Customizing Your Macintosh Print Settings Follow these steps to print using advanced printer settings on a Macintosh: 1. From the File menu, select Print. 2. Select Print Settings from the pop-up menu. 3. To access advanced settings, click Advanced. 4. In addition to the basic settings, you can select these advanced options: ■Print Quality: Lets you specify a print quality for your selected paper type, including Photo (1440 × 720 dpi), Best Photo (1440 × 1440 dpi), or Photo RPM (5760 × 1440 dpi) for the highest print quality on certain paper types. (Printing takes a bit longer in Photo RPM mode.) ■High Speed: Speeds up printing by allowing printing back and forth across the page, instead of in just one direction. ■Mirror Image: Inverts the image horizontally. ■Finest Detail: Places ink droplets in the most precise manner for high quality printing. (Printing takes longer in this mode.) ■Gloss Optimizer: Applies gloss optimizer on certain paper types.
Printing From Start to Finish37 Note: For more information on advanced settings, or instructions on saving them as a group so you can reuse them later, click ? 5. To select Color Management options, select Color Management from the pop-up menu. Select Color Management options as follows: ■Color Controls: Let you adjust the Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Gamma, and cyan, magenta, and yellow levels in your printout. ■ColorSync: Uses standard ColorSync profiles for your printer to help match colors in your image (for ColorSync-enabled applications). If you’re using custom profiles or the Epson Premium ICC profiles in an application such as Adobe Photoshop, select Off (No Color Adjustment) instead. ■No Color Adjustment: Turns off your printer’s color management features so you can use ICC profiles in an ICC-aware application such as Adobe Photoshop instead. Note: To print with custom or Premium ICC color profiles when you’re using Photoshop, see “Managing Color With Profiles” on page 49. 6. Click Print.

39 Printing Special Photos When you need to print photos using the special Stylus Photo R1800 printing features, follow the instructions in these sections: ■“Printing on Roll Paper or Canvas” below ■“Printing Borderless Cut Sheets” on page 45 ■“Managing Color With Profiles” on page 49 ■“Easy Printing With Photoshop Elements 3.0” on page 63 Printing on Roll Paper or Canvas Before you print on roll paper or canvas, load it as described on page 20. Then follow the steps in the next sections to select your settings, control printing, and remove and store the roll paper or canvas. Caution: Don’t open Epson Status Monitor, pause printing, or respond to any on-screen, low ink messages when your printer is printing. This may cause your printer to pause and leave an uneven surface on your printout. If your ink is running low, wait until printing finishes before checking ink levels or attempting to replace a cartridge. If you must replace an ink cartridge in the middle of a print job, the quality of your printout may decline. For best results, check your ink levels and replace ink cartridges, if necessary, before printing large or high-resolution print jobs.
40Printing Special Photos Selecting Roll Paper Print Settings Follow the steps in one of these sections to select your roll paper print settings: ■“Windows” below ■“Mac OS X” on page 41 Windows 1. Start your print application, open your photo file, and resize it as necessary. 2. Open the File menu, click Print, then click Properties or Preferences. 3. Select the type of roll paper you loaded as the Type option: ■Premium Photo Paper Semi-gloss ■Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster ■Premium Photo Paper Glossy Note: For PremierArt Water Resistant Canvas, choose Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster. For Piezo Pro Matte Canvas, choose Premium Presentation Paper Matte. Choose Best Photo or Photo RPM and uncheck High Speed (on the Advanced screen) when printing on canvas. For the best color prints on either Epson canvas medium, make sure you use the Premium ICC profile. 4. If you’ll be printing photos without any borders, click the Borderless box. 5. Select the photo size as the Size setting. If you’re printing a panoramic photo, select User Defined from the Size list and enter the size of your photo. Make sure the width of your photo is 4, 8.3, or 13 inches maximum, depending on the width of the roll paper you loaded. Also set the margins to 0 in your printing software. Note: Don’t select PhotoEnhance or Reverse Order when printing on roll paper or canvas. For the source, don’t choose Sheet, Manual - Roll, or CD/DVD.
