    TheFiringPinLockengagesthefiringpintopreventitsmovementuntilthe
    triggerissqueezed.Housedintheslide,theFiringPinLockisspringloaded
    intoengagementwiththefiringpintopreventitstrikingthecartridgeprimer.
    SqueezingthetriggerdisengagestheFiringPinLockbeforethesearreleases
    thehammertostrikethefiringpinanddischargethepistol.Thissafetydevice
    minimizestheriskofaccidentaldischargethroughmishandlingsuchaswhena

    loadedpistolisdroppedorreceivesablowtothemuzzle.

    thehammeryoumustsqueezethetrigger.Whenyousqueezethetrigger

    todischargebullets,anditwilldothisefficientlywhenitisloadedandyou

    AColtMKIV/Series80and90semi-automaticpistolisreadytofirewhena
    loadedmagazineisinsertedintothepistol,theslidepulledbacktocock
    hammer,andreleasedtotravelforwardandfeedaroundfromthemagazine
    intothechamber.Finalforwardslidemovementlocksbarrelandslidetogether
    anddeactivatesdisconnector.
    Whenthepistolisgrasped,thegripsafetyisreleasedsothattriggermaynow
    besqueezed.Whenthetriggerissqueezedthetriggerbarleveractsonthe
    plungerlevertodisengagethefiringpinlockjustbeforetheseardisengages
    fromthehammer.Thehammerpivotsforwardundertheforceofthemainspring
    tostriketherearofthefiringpin.Thefiringpinisdrivenforwardtostrikeprimer
    inbaseofcartridge.
    Theenergyimpartedtotheprimerignitesit;theprimerinturnignitesthe
    mainpowderchargewhich,inburning,rapidlygeneratesextremelyhighgas
    pressuretodrivethebulletdownthebarrel.Riflinggroovesinthebarrel
    impartstabilizingspintothebulletsothatitwillfollowamoreaccuratepathto
    thetargetwhenitleavesthemuzzle.
    Forcerearwardontheslidebreechfacestartsslideandbarrelontheir
    rearwardtravel;however,theslideunlocksfromthebarrelonlyaftergas

    pressureisreducedtoasafelevel.Rearwardslidetraveldepressesthe
    disconnector,carriesspentcartridgerearwardonextractoruntilbaseofcar-
    tridgeisstruckbyejectortopropelitthroughejectionport.
    Slidemovementcontinuesundermomentumtofullycockthehammer.Iflast
    roundhasbeenfired,themagazinefollowerwillactivatetheslidestoptohold
    slidetorear,butifaroundremainsinmagazine,theslidewillmoveforwardto
    feedandlockthenextroundinthechamber.Thetriggermustbereleasedand
    squeezedagaintofirethenextround.
    Coltfirearmsaredesignedtofunctionwithavarietyofbrandsandtypesof
    factory-manufacturedammunitionintheappropriatecaliber;butnotall
    ammunitionproducesthesameresult.Coltrecommendsthatafteryouread
    andunderstandthismanual,yougototherangeandfiredifferentammunition
    whichisappropriatetothecaliberofyourfirearm.Onceyoufindthe
    ammunitionwhichfunctionsbest,keepusingit.Everytimebeforeloading
    yourpistol,examinetheammunition,particularlyonandaroundthe
    primer.Lookfordents,scratchesandothersignsofdamage.Donotload
    damagedammunition.
