FiringPinLock TheFiringPinLockengagesthefiringpintopreventitsmovementuntilthe triggerissqueezed.Housedintheslide,theFiringPinLockisspringloaded intoengagementwiththefiringpintopreventitstrikingthecartridgeprimer. SqueezingthetriggerdisengagestheFiringPinLockbeforethesearreleases thehammertostrikethefiringpinanddischargethepistol.Thissafetydevice minimizestheriskofaccidentaldischargethroughmishandlingsuchaswhena A loadedpistolisdroppedorreceivesablowtothemuzzle. iliCAUTION:DONOTCARRYYOURPISTOLWITHTHEHAMMERDOWNON ALIVECARTRIDGE.Todosomeansyoumustlowerthehammer.Tolower thehammeryoumustsqueezethetrigger.Whenyousqueezethetrigger youdisengagethefiringpinlock.Thisisnotasafecondition.Instead,we urgeyoutofollowtheinstructionsinthismanual.Whenyoudo,youcan enjoythesafeuseofyourpistol. SECTION4 , .., FUNCTION AColtMKIV/Series80and90semi-automaticpistolisreadytofirewhena loadedmagazineisinsertedintothepistol,theslidepulledbacktocock hammer,andreleasedtotravelforwardandfeedaroundfromthemagazine intothechamber.Finalforwardslidemovementlocksbarrelandslidetogether anddeactivatesdisconnector. Whenthepistolisgrasped,thegripsafetyisreleasedsothattriggermaynow besqueezed.Whenthetriggerissqueezedthetriggerbarleveractsonthe plungerlevertodisengagethefiringpinlockjustbeforetheseardisengages fromthehammer.Thehammerpivotsforwardundertheforceofthemainspring tostriketherearofthefiringpin.Thefiringpinisdrivenforwardtostrikeprimer inbaseofcartridge. Theenergyimpartedtotheprimerignitesit;theprimerinturnignitesthe mainpowderchargewhich,inburning,rapidlygeneratesextremelyhighgas pressuretodrivethebulletdownthebarrel.Riflinggroovesinthebarrel impartstabilizingspintothebulletsothatitwillfollowamoreaccuratepathto thetargetwhenitleavesthemuzzle. Coltfirearmsaredesignedtofunctionwithavarietyofbrandsandtypesof factory-manufacturedammunitionintheappropriatecaliber;butnotall ammunitionproducesthesameresult.Coltrecommendsthatafteryouread andunderstandthismanual,yougototherangeandfiredifferentammunition whichisappropriatetothecaliberofyourfirearm.Onceyoufindthe ammunitionwhichfunctionsbest,keepusingit.Everytimebeforeloading yourpistol,examinetheammunition,particularlyonandaroundthe primer.Lookfordents,scratchesandothersignsofdamage.Donotload damagedammunition.
