24 Chapter 4 Connecting the Scanner Connect the scanner to the computer and power outlet. Connecting the Scanner to the Computer........................................ 24 Turning the Power ON ........................................................................ 25 Connecting the Scanner to the Computer Connect the scanner to the computer. Connecting the Scanner to the Computer Turn OFF the Auto Start switch on the rear of the scanner, and use the supplied USB cable to connect the scanner to the computer. Take care not to disconnect the USB cable while data is being transferred between the scanner and computer during scanning. The USB connector to which the scanner is connected on your computer must be one capable of supplying 500 mA / 5 V of power. Do not connect the scanner to the computer before installing the software. Using a USB Hub The scanner cannot be used when it is connected to a computer via a bus- powered USB hub. A self-powered USB hub can be used, but operation is not guaranteed. When connected to a USB port that supports USB 3.0, the scanner operates on 900 mA bus power and is capable of high-speed scanning. Using the power supply cable in such cases will not increase the scanning speed. Although this scanner supports USB 3.0 bus power, USB data transfer rates remain at USB 2.0 speeds.
25 Auto Start Switch There is an Auto Start switch at the rear of the scanner for setting whether to operate the scanner as a storage device. Depending on the position of the Auto Start switch, the scanner operates as shown below. Turn the Auto Start switch ON or OFF before you connect the scanner to a computer. If it is turned ON or OFF after the scanner is connected to a computer, the scanner may not operate properly. When you use the scanner with the Auto Start switch turned ON, the computer needs to be started before you connect the scanner to the computer. If the scanner is connected to a computer that is not started and the feed tray of the scanner has been opened to turn ON the power, the computer may not be able to start. Turning the Power ON 1Raise the feed tray slightly while pressing the feed tray release lever. Opening the scanner document feed tray switches on the power supply automatically. 2Extend the front panel of the feed tray before opening the entire feed tray. Starting CaptureOnTouch Lite preinstalled in the scanner enables you to perform scanning on a computer without the scanner driver installed. (However, you cannot store scanned images or any other data on the scanner.) OFFThe scanner is recognized as a scanning device by the computer. You can connect the scanner to a computer with the scanner driver installed, and perform scanning using an application, such as the supplied CaptureOnTouch.
26 When the scanner is turned on for the first time, the balloon message shown below appears on the Windows task bar. If you wait a while, automatic scanner recognition will end and the scanner will become ready to use. When the scanner is properly connected to the computer, the (CaptureOnTouch) icon appears on the taskbar as follows. If the taskbar icon appears as or the scanner is not properly connected to the computer. Check the status of the power and USB cable.

Postcard Business Card Card (Plastic cards) Use the card slot when scanning plastic cards. Embossed cards may not be able to be scanned correctly, depending on the type of embossment. A document must meet the following criteria to be scannable: ●When scanning multiple documents of different sizes, place the documents so that they cover the entire span of the feed rollers. ●It is recommended that documents exceeding 356 mm (14) in size are fed one sheet at a time. ●Scanning documents before the ink is dry can cause problems with the scanner. Always make sure that the ink on a document is dry before scanning it. ●Scanning documents that are written in pencil or similar material may make the rollers and scanning glass dirty, which can lead to smudges on the scanned image and transfer the dirt to subsequent documents. Always clean the internal parts of the scanner after scanning such documents. ●When scanning a two-sided document that is printed on thin paper, the image on the opposite side of each page may show through. In this case, adjust the scanning intensity in the application software before scanning the document. ●It is recommended that thin documents are fed one sheet at a time.Wrinkled or creased documentsCarbon paper Curled documents Coated paper Torn documentsExtremely thin, translucent paper Documents with paper clips or staplesDocuments with excessive paper dust particles. Straighten out the creases and folds at the ends of the manuscript. Load the document into the feed inlet of the scanner with the scanning side of the document face down and the top of the document pointing down. 4Align the document guides with both edges of the loaded document. Press the document beneath the tabs of the document guides. Up to 20 pages of plain paper can be loaded at the same time. Make sure that the document does not exceed the loading limit marks ( ) on the document guides. When loading a multi-page document, place the pages of the document with their edges slightly askew. If the document is curved, straighten the document before loading it. The scanned document is ejected from the front. Do not place any objects in front of the scanner.
