321 Troubleshooting Guide Use a fully-charged battery pack (p.28). The rechargeable battery pack performance will degrade over repeated use. Purchase a new one. The number of possible shots will decrease with any of the following operations: • Pressing the shutter button hal fway for a prolonged period. • Often activating only the AF without taking a picture. • Using the lens’ Image Stabilizer. • Using the LCD monitor often. • Continuing Live View shooting or movie shooting for a prolonged period. Auto power off is in effect. If you do not want auto power off to take effect, set [ 52: Auto power off ] to [Disable ] (p.201). Even if [ 52: Auto power off ] is set to [Disable], the LCD monitor will still turn off after the camera is le ft idle for 30 min. (The camera’s power does not turn off.) Press the button to turn on the LCD monitor. Make sure the card is properly inserted (p.31). Slide the card’s write-protect switch to the Write/Erase position (p.31). If the card is full, replace the card or delete unnecessary images to make room (p.31, 264). If you try to focus in the One-Shot AF operation while the focus confirmation light < o> in the viewfinder blin ks, a picture cannot be taken. Press the shutter button halfw ay again to refocus automatically, or focus manually (p.43, 100). The battery becomes exhausted quickly. The camera turns off by itself. Shooting-Related Problems No images can be shot or recorded. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 322 If a card error message is di splayed, see page 32 or 331. Set the lens focus mode switch to < AF> (p.39). To prevent camera shake, press t he shutter button gently (p.42, 43). If the lens has an Image Stabiliz er, set the IS switch to . In low light, the shutter speed may become slow. Use a faster shutter speed (p.108), set a higher ISO speed (p.90), use flash (p.104), or use a tripod. Set the AF operation to One-Shot AF . Focus lock is not possible in the AI Servo AF and AI Focus AF operations (p.95). Depending on the lens type, shutter speed, aperture, subject conditions, brightness, etc., the continuous shooting speed may become slower. The card cannot be used. The image is out of focus. I cannot lock the focus and recompose the shot. The continuous shooting speed is slow. COPY
323 Troubleshooting Guide With ISO 12800 or “ H” (equivalent to ISO 25600), the maximum burst for continuous shooting will greatly decrease (p.91). Set [ z3: High ISO speed NR] to [ Standard/Low/Disable]. If it is set to [ High ] or if [ Multi Shot Noise Reduction ] is set, the maximum burst during continuous shooting will greatly decrease (p.124). With [Chromatic aberration: Enable ], the maximum burst for continuous shooting will great ly decrease (p.128). During WB bracketing, the maximum burst for continuous shooting will decrease (p.138). If you shoot something that has fine detail (such as a field of grass), the file size will be larger and the actual maximum bur st may be lower than the number mentioned on page 87. Under [ 54: Custom Functions (C.Fn) ], if [3: Highlight tone priority ] is set to [ 1: Enable ], ISO 100 cannot be set. If [ 0: Disable] is set, ISO 100 can be set (p.295). This also a pplies to movie shooting (p.174). Under [ 54: Custom Functions (C.Fn) ], if [3: Highlight tone priority ] is set to [ 1: Enable ], the [H] ISO speed (25600) cannot be selected even when [ 2: ISO expansion ] is set to [1: On]. If [0: Disable] is set for [ 3: Highlight tone priority ], [H] can be set (p.294). Under [ 54: Custom Functions (C.Fn) ], if [3: Highlight tone priority ] is set to [ 1: Enable ], the Auto Lighting Optimi zer cannot be set. If [0: Disable ] is set, the Auto Lighting Optimizer can be set (p.295). The maximum burst during continuous shooting is lower. ISO 100 cannot be set. ISO speed [H] (ISO 25600) cannot be set. The Auto Lighting Optimizer cannot be set. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 324 Set [ z2: Auto Lighting Optimizer ] to [Disable ]. When [Standard/ Low/High ] is set, even if you set a decreased exposure compensation or flash exposure compensation, the image may come out bright (p.123). If you shoot at night when the ba ckground is dark, the shutter speed becomes slow automatically (slow- sync shooting) so that both the subject and background are properly exposed. To prevent a slow shutter speed, under [ z1: Flash control ], set [Flash sync. speed in Av mode ] to [1/200-1/60 sec. auto ] or [1/200 sec. (fixed) ] (p.215). In the A, 2, 4, and 6 modes, the built-in flash will be raised automatically when flash is necessary. If you shoot continuously with the bui lt-in flash at short intervals, the flash may stop operating to protect the flash unit. If you use a flash unit other than an EX-series Speedlite, the flash will always be fired at full output (p.306). Under [ z1: Flash control ] and [External flash C.Fn setting ], if [ Flash metering mode ] is set to [TTL], the flash will always fire at full output (p.216). Even though I set a decrease d exposure compensation, the image comes out bright. When I use the < f> mode with flash, the shutter speed becomes slow. The built-in flash is raised by itself. The built-in flash does not fire. The flash always fi res at full output. COPY
325 Troubleshooting Guide If flash exposure compensation has bee n set on an external Speedlite, [ Flash exposure compensation ] (p.217) cannot be set in the [ External flash func. setting ] screen. Also, if you set flash exposure compensation with the camera and then set flash exposure compensation with the external Speedlite, the Speedlite’s flash exposure compensation setting will be given priority. When the Speedlite’s flash exposure compensati on is canceled (set to 0), flash exposure compensation can be set with the camera. Under [ z1: Flash control ], set [Flash sync. speed in Av mode ] to [ Auto ] (p.215). The built-in flash’s pop-up mechanism moves slightly. This is normal. If you use flash, the shutter will make two sounds each time you shoot (p.145). It indicates that the camera’s intern al temperature is high. If the white icon is displayed, the still phot o’s image quality may deteriorate. If the red < E> icon is displayed, it indica tes that the Live View or movie shooting will soon stop automatically (p.165, 195). I cannot set flash exposure compensation with [External flash func. setting]. High-speed sync cannot be set in the < f> mode. The camera makes a noise when it is shaken. The shutter makes two shooting sounds during Live View shooting. During Live View and movie shooting, a white < s> or red < E> icon is displayed. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 326 If the card’s writing speed is slow, movie shooting may stop automatically. Use an SD Speed Class 6 “ ” or faster card. To find out the card’s read/ write speed, see the card manufacturer’s Web site, etc. If the movie shooting time reaches 29 min. 59 sec., the movie shooting will stop automatically. In shooting modes other than , the ISO speed is set automatically. In the < a> mode, you can freely set the ISO speed (p.174). If you change the shutter speed or aperture during movie shooting, the changes in the exposu re may be recorded. Zooming the lens during movie s hooting can cause changes in the exposure regardless of whether the lens’ maximum aperture changes or not. Changes in the exposure may be recorded as a result (except EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM). If you move the camera to the left or right quickly (high-speed panning) or shoot a moving subject, t he image may look distorted. Flickering, horizontal stripes (noise ), or irregular exposures can be caused by fluorescent light, LED bulbs, or other light sources during movie shooting. Also, changes in t he exposure (brightness) or color tone may also be re corded. In the mode, a slow shutter speed may solve the problem. Movie shooting stops by itself. The ISO speed cannot be set for movie shooting. The exposure changes during movie shooting. The subject looks distor ted during movie shooting. The image flickers or horizont al stripes appear during movie shooting. COPY
327 Troubleshooting Guide Check if your finger is co vering the speaker (p.21). Check if [ Enable] is set with [ 53: Touch control ] (p.55). In Basic Zone modes and in movie shooting mode, certain tabs and menu options are not displayed. Se t the shooting mode to a Creative Zone mode (p.46). Set the color space to sRGB. If Adobe RGB is set, the first character will be an underscore (p.139). It is a movie file (p.205). If the card already contains re corded images, the image number may not start from 0001 (p.204). Operation Problems During touch screen operations, the beeper suddenly sounds softer. Touch screen operation is not possible. Display Problems The menu screen shows few tabs and options. The file name’s first charac ter is an underscore (“_”). The file name starts with “MVI_”. The file numbering does not start from 0001. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 328 Make sure the correct date and time has been set (p.36). Check the time zone and daylight savings time (p.36). The shooting date and time does not appear in the picture. The date and time is instead recorded in the image data as shooting information. When printing, you can imprint the date and time in the picture by using the date and time recorded in the shooting information \ (p.281). If the card has recorded a number of images greater than the camera can display, [ ###] will be displayed (p. 245). If the LCD monitor is dirty, use a soft cloth to clean it. In low or high temperatures, the LCD monitor display may seem slow or may look black. It will return to normal at room temperature. [Eye-Fi settings ] will appear only when an Ey e-Fi card is inserted in the camera. If the Eye-Fi card has a write-protect switch set to the LOCK position, you will not be abl e to check the card’s connection status or disable Eye-Fi card transmission (p.307). The shooting date and time displayed is incorrect. The date and time is not in the picture. [###] is displayed. The LCD monitor does not display a clear image. [Eye-Fi settings] does not appear. COPY
329 Troubleshooting Guide It is the highlight alert (p.268). Ov erexposed highlight areas with a loss of highlight detail will blink. If the image is protected, it cannot be erased (p.262). Movies edited with a personal computer using the provided ImageBrowser EX (p.350) or other software cannot be played back with the camera. However, video snapshot albums edited with EOS Video Snapshot Task (p.190) c an be played back on the camera. If you operate the camera’s dials or lens during movie shooting, the operation noise will also be reco rded. Using an external microphone (commercially available) is recommended (p.193). During autoexposure movie shooting, if there is a drastic change in the exposure level, the reco rding will stop momentar ily until the brightness stabilizes. If this happens, shoot with < a> shooting mode (p.173). Make sure the stereo AV cable or HDMI cable’s plug is inserted all the way in (p.258, 261). Set the video OUT system (NTSC/PAL) to the same video system as the TV set (p.261). Playback Problems Part of the image blinks in black. The image cannot be erased. The movie cannot be played back. When the movie is played ba ck, camera operation noise can be heard. The movie has still moments. No image appears on the TV screen. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 330 If the movie file size reaches 4 GB, another movie file will be created automatically (p.182). Depending on the card reader and com puter OS used, SDXC cards might not be correctly recognized. If this occurs, connect your camera to the computer with the provided interface cable, then transfer the images to your computer using EOS Utility (provided software, p.350). JPEG c and RAW images cannot be resized (p.273). If you selected [Clean now f], the shutter will make a noise, but no picture is taken (p.219). If you repeatedly turn the power switch < 1>/ at a short interval, the < f> icon may not be displayed (p.34). What is displayed on the screen di ffers depending on the printer. This instruction manual list s all the printing effects available (p.280). There are multiple movie file s for a single movie shoot. My card reader does not recognize the card. I cannot resize the image. Sensor Cleaning Problems The shutter makes a noise during sensor cleaning. Automatic sensor cleaning does not work. Printing-Related Problems There are fewer printing effects than listed in the instruction manual. COPY
