421 Troubleshooting Guide Set the lens focus mode switch to < AF> (p.40). To prevent camera shake, press t he shutter button gently (p.44, 45). If the lens has an Image Stabilizer, set the IS switch to < 1>. In low light, the shutter speed may become slow. Use a faster shutter speed (p.160), set a higher ISO speed (p.120), use flash (p.188, 193), or use a tripod. Set the AF operation to One-Shot AF . Focus lock is not possible in the AI Servo AF mode, or when servo ta kes effect in AI Focus AF mode (p.75). If the AF method is set to [ u+Tracking ], [FlexiZone - Multi], or [ FlexiZone - Single ] for Live View shooting or movie shooting, the AF control method (phase-difference detection with the image sensor or contrast detection) will switch automatically depending on the lens used and functions selected, such as movie digital zoom or magnified view. This can greatly affect the AF speed and the camera may take a longer time to focus. Depending on the shooting conditions, it may take longer to focus the subject. Use FlexiZone - Single or focus manually. Depending on the shutter speed, aperture, subject conditions, brightness, etc., the continuous shooting speed may become slower. If you shoot something that has fine detail (such as a field of grass), the file size will be larger and the actual maximum bur st may be lower than the number mentioned on page 117. The image is out of focus. I cannot lock the focus and recompose the shot. AF speed changes depending on lenses used. With FlexiZone - Multi, it takes longer to focus. The continuous shooting speed is slow. The maximum burst during continuous shooting is lower. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 422 When [ z4: Highlight tone priority ] is set to [Disable], ISO 100/125/ 160 can be set (p.145). If [z 4: Highlight tone priority ] is set to [Enable], the settable ISO speed range will be ISO 200 - ISO 12800 (or up to ISO 6400 for movie shooting). Even if you expand th e settable ISO speed range in [ISO speed range ], you cannot set ex panded ISO speeds (H). If [z 4: Highlight tone priority ] is set to [Enable], the Auto Lighting Optimizer cannot be set. When [ z4: Highlight tone priority] is set to [ Disable ], then the Auto Lighting Optimizer can be set (p.145). Set [ z3: Auto Lighting Optimizer ] to [Disable ]. When [ Low/ Standard/High ] is set, even if you set a decreased exposure compensation or flash exposure co mpensation, the image may come out bright (p.140). When the image-recording quality is set to 41 or 61, the multiple-exposure image will be recorded in 1 quality (p.181). If you shoot at night when the ba ckground is dark, the shutter speed becomes slow automatically (slow- sync shooting) so that both the subject and background are properly exposed. To prevent a slow shutter speed, under [ z2: Flash control], set [Flash sync. speed in Av mode ] to [1/250-1/60sec. auto ] or [1/250 sec. (fixed) ] (p.196). ISO 100 cannot be set. ISO speed expansion cannot be selected. The Auto Lighting Optimizer cannot be set. Even though I set a decreased exposure compensation, the image comes out bright. The multiple-exposure image is shot in 1 quality. When I use the < f> mode with flash, the shutter speed becomes slow. COPY
423 Troubleshooting Guide In shooting modes (< A>< 6>) whose default setting is < a> (Auto flash), the built-in flas h will rise automatically when necessary. If you shoot continuously with the built-in flash at short intervals, the flash may stop operating to protect the flash unit. If you use a non-Canon flash unit with Live View shooting, set [A2: Silent LV shoot. ] to [Disable ] (p.231). If you use a flash unit other than an EX-series Speedlite, the flash will always be fired at full output (p.194). When the external Speedlite’s [ Flash metering mode] Custom Function is set to [TTL ] (autoflash), the flash will always be fired at full output (p.202). If flash exposure compensation has already been set with the external Speedlite, flash exposure com pensation cannot be set with the camera. When the external Speedlit e’s flash exposure compensation is canceled (set to 0), flash ex posure compensation can be set with the camera. Under [ z2: Flash control ], set [Flash sync. speed in Av mode ] to [ Auto ] (p.196). The built-in flash’s pop-up mechanism moves slightly. This is normal and not a malfunction. The built-in flash is raised by itself. The built-in flash does not fire. The external flash does not fire. The external flash always fires at full output. Flash exposure compensation cannot be set for the external Speedlite. High-speed sync cannot be set in the < f> mode. The camera makes a noise when it is shaken. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 424 If you use flash, the shutter will ma ke two sounds each time you shoot (p.217). It indicates that the camera’s intern al temperature is high. If the white < > icon is displayed, the still ph oto’s image quality may deteriorate. If the red < E> icon is displayed, it indicates that the Live View or movie shooting will soon stop automatically (p.249, 287). If [53: Wi-Fi ] is set to [Enable], movie shooting is not possible. Before shooting movies, set [ Wi-Fi] to [Disable ]. If the card’s writing speed is slow, movie shooting may stop automatically. If the compression method is set to [ IPB], use a card with a reading/writing speed of at least 6 MB per sec. If the compression method is set to [ ALL-I] (I-only), use a card with a reading/writing speed of at least 20 MB per sec. (p.3). To find out the card’s reading/writing speed, refer to the card manufacturer’s Web site. If the movie shooting time reaches 29 min. 59 sec., the movie shooting will stop automatically. In shooting modes other than , the ISO speed is set automatically. In the < a> mode, you can freely set the ISO speed (p.257). The shutter makes two shooting sounds during Live View shooting. During Live View and movie shooting, a white < > or red < E> icon is displayed. I cannot shoot a movie. Movie shooting stops by itself. The ISO speed cannot be set for movie shooting. COPY
425 Troubleshooting Guide If you shoot a movie when [ Maximum: H (25600)] is set with [ISO speed range ] and ISO speed is set to “ H” (25600), the ISO speed will switch to “ H” (12800) (during movie shooting with manual exposure). Even if you switch back to still photo shooting, the ISO speed will not revert to the original setting. If you change the shutter speed or aperture during movie shooting, the changes in the exposure may be recorded. Zooming the lens during movie s hooting can cause changes in the exposure regardless of whether the lens’ maximum aperture changes or not. The changes in the expos ure may be recorded as a result. If you move the camera to the left or right quickly (high-speed panning) or shoot a moving subject, t he image may look distorted. Flickering, horizontal stripes (noise ), or irregular exposures can be caused by fluorescent light, LED bulbs, or other light sources during movie shooting. Also, changes in th e exposure (brightness) or color tone may be reco rded. In the mode, a slow shutter speed may solve the problem. Setting a lower image quality fo r still photos and shooting fewer continuous still photos may resolve the problem. Shooting still photos during movie shooting will cause a discrepancy between the actual time and time code. When you want to edit a movie using time code, it is recommended not to shoot still photos during movie shooting. The manually set ISO speed changes when switching to movie shooting. The exposure changes during movie shooting. The subject looks distorted during movie shooting. The image flickers or horizontal stripes appear during movie shooting. When I shoot still photos during movie shooting, the movie shooting stops. Time code is off. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 426 If the camera is connected to a pr inter, computer, GPS receiver, or other device with an interface cable, Wi-Fi cannot be set ([53: Wi-Fi] will be grayed out). Disconnect the in terface cable, then set the Wi-Fi. For details, refer to the Wi-F i Function Instruction Manual. * The EOS 70D (N) does not have the Wi-Fi function. Set the < R> switch downward (lock release, p.48). Check the [ 8C.Fn III-2: Multi function lock ] setting (p.375). Check the [ 8C.Fn III-4: Custom Controls ] setting (p.383). Check if your finger is blocking the speaker (p.20). Check if [ 53: Touch control ] is set to [Standard] or [Sensitive ] (p.56). Wi-Fi Wi-Fi cannot be set.* Operation Problems I cannot change the setting with the dial, dial, or < 9>. The camera button/dial’s function has changed. During touch screen operations, the beeper suddenly sounds softer. Touch screen operation is not possible. COPY
427 Troubleshooting Guide In Basic Zone modes, certain tabs and menu options are not displayed. Set the shooting mode to a Creative Zone mode (p.52). Set the color space to sRGB. If Adobe RGB is set, the first character will be an underscore (p.155). It is a movie file (p.152). If the card already contains re corded images, the image number may not start from 0001 (p.151). Make sure the correct date and time has been set (p.37). Check the time zone and daylight saving time (p.37, 38). The shooting date and time does not appear in the picture. The date and time is instead recorded in the image data as shooting information. When printing, you can imprint the date and time in the picture by using the date and time recorded in the shooting information \ (p.351, 355). If the card has recorded a number of images greater than the camera can display, [ ###] will be displayed (p.303). Display Problems The menu screen shows few tabs and options. The file name’s first charac ter is an underscore (“_”). The file name starts with “MVI_”. The file numbering does not start from 0001. The shooting date and time displayed is incorrect. The date and time is not in the picture. [###] is displayed. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 428 If the LCD monitor is dirty, use a soft cloth to clean it. In low or high temperatures, the LCD monitor display may seem slow or may look black. It will return to normal at room temperature. [Eye-Fi settings ] will appear only when an Ey e-Fi card is inserted in the camera. If the Eye-Fi card has a write-protect switch set to the LOCK position, you will not be abl e to check the card’s connection status or disable Eye- Fi transmission (p.401). [3 3: Highlight alert ] is set to [Enable] (p.294). [3 3: AF point disp.] is set to [ Enable] (p.294). If the image is protected, it cannot be erased (p.320). Movies edited with a computer us ing the provided ImageBrowser EX (p.456) or other software cannot be played back with the camera. However, video snapshot albums edited with EOS Video Snapshot Task (p.286) can be played on the camera. The LCD monitor does not display a clear image. [Eye-Fi settings] does not appear. Playback Problems Part of the image blinks in black. A red box is displayed on the image. The image cannot be erased. The movie cannot be played back. COPY
429 Troubleshooting Guide If you operate the camera’s dials or lens during movie shooting, the operation noise will also be reco rded. Using an external microphone (commercially available) is recommended (p.269). During autoexposure movie shooting, if there is a drastic change in the exposure level, the reco rding will stop momentar ily until the brightness stabilizes. If this hap pens, shoot with the < a> shooting mode (p.256). Make sure the HDMI cable or stereo AV cable’s plug is inserted all the way in (p.316, 319). Set the video OUT system (NTSC/PAL) to the same video system as the TV set (p.319). If the movie file size reaches 4 GB, another movie file will be created automatically (p.266). Depending on the card reader and com puter OS used, SDXC cards may not be correctly recognized. If this occurs, connect your camera to the computer with the interfac e cable, then transfer the images to your computer using EOS Utility (provided software, p.456). When the movie is played back, camera operation noise can be heard. The movie has still moments. No image appears on the TV screen. There are multiple movie files for a single movie shoot. My card reader does not recognize the card. COPY
Troubleshooting Guide 430 41 and 61 images cannot be processed with the camera. Use the provided software Digital Photo Professional to process the image (p.456). c JPEG images and 1/41/ 61 images cannot be resized with the camera (p.333). If you selected [Clean now f], the shutter will make a noise, but no picture is taken (p.340). If you repeatedly turn the power switch < 1> / at a short interval, the < f> icon may not be displayed (p.35). What is displayed on the screen di ffers depending on the printer. This instruction manual list s all the printing effects available (p.350). If [53: Wi-Fi ] is set to [ Enable], direct printing is not possible. Set [ Wi- Fi ] to [ Disable ], then connect the camera to the printer with an interface cable. I cannot process the RAW image. I cannot resize the image. Sensor Cleaning Problems The shutter makes a noise during sensor cleaning. Automatic sensor cleaning does not work. Printing-Related Problems There are fewer printing effe cts than listed in the instruction manual. Direct printing does not work. COPY
