    Connecting Brother Machine to PC
    with a USB Cable
    (For Using Windows¨ 98 Only)
    A USB cable is not included with your MFC 8300.  Before you can set up
    the USB interface, please purchase a standard USB cable.  Or, to set up
    the parallel interface instead, please see ÒConnecting Brother Machine to
    PC with Bundled Parallel CableÓ on page 12-9.
    1After you have set up the MFC and checked that it is working properly,
    make sure the MFC is turned on and the PC is turned off.
    2Connect the USB cable to both the MFC and PC.
    3Turn on your PC. The Add
    New Hardware Wizard
    appears.  Click Next.

    4Select [Recommended]
    and click Next.
    Installing Brother Printer Driver Using USB Cable
    1Insert the Printer driver CD-ROM.
    2Select Specify a location
    and remove the other
    check marks, then click
    Browse to locate the file.
    3Double-click on the CD
    icon and click on the
    Win98usb folder, then
    click OK.

    4Click Next.
    5Select [Recommended]
    and click Next.
    6Confirm the choice is
    Brother MFL Pro
    Printer II and click
    Next.

    7Select BRUSB:   USB
    Printer Port and click
    Next.
    8Type Brother MFL Pro
    Printer II as the name of
    printer and click Next.
    9Select Ye s
    [Recommended] and click

    10After completing the test
    print, click Ye s.
    11Click Finish. This
    completes the installation
    of the Printer and its USB
    driver.

    Manually Installing True Type Fonts
    For the MFC 8300, you must install the True Type Fonts manually,
    following the steps bellow. For the MFC 8600 and MFC 8700, you can
    install the True Type Fonts during the initial Windows
    ¨ Printer Driver
    installation, or manually at a later time.
    True Type Fonts are the fonts that are used in the Windows
    ¨ operating
    systems. If you install the Brother True Type Fonts, more types of fonts
    will be available for Windows
    ¨ applications.
    For Windows¨ 95/98 and Windows NT¨ Workstation
    Version 4.0:
    1Insert the Brother CD-ROM drive for True Type Fonts.
    2Click on Start, then Settings, and select Control Panel.
    3In the Control Panel window, double-click on the Fonts folder.
    4In the Fonts window, select Install New Font... from the File menu.
    5Select your CD-ROM drive and select the font folder.
    6Select the fonts you want to install and click the OK button.
    For Windows¨ 3.1x:
    1Insert the Brother CD-ROM for True Type Fonts.
    2In the Program Manager, double-click the Main icon.
    3In the Main window, double-click the Control Panel icon.
    4In the Control Panel window, double-click the Fonts icon.
    5In the Fonts window, click the Add... button.
    6Select your CD-ROM drive.
    7Select the fonts you want to install and click the OK button.

    Connecting Brother Machine to PC
    With Bundled Parallel Cable
    You must connect the Brother machine to your PC with the included
    bi-directional IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cable.
    1Make sure to unplug the machineÕs power cord from the electrical outlet
    before connecting the parallel interface cable.
    Also, make sure the PC is turned off and unplugged from the electrical
    power before you connect the interface cable.
    2Connect the parallel interface cable to the parallel interface port of the
    machine and secure the connection with the wire clips.
    3Connect the interface
    cable to the printer port of
    the PC and secure
    with the two screws.

    computerÕs parallel printer
    port, see the UserÕs Guide
    for your PC.
    4Before plugging in your PC and turning it on, plug in the electrical cord of
    the Brother machine.
    If you are using Windows¨ 95, after you connect Brother machine to PC.
    You may see ÒNew Hardware Found Brother MFCXXXXÓ during startup.
    You can select ÒDo not install a driver (Windows
    ¨ will not prompt you
    again).Ó and click OK, so Windows¨ will not display this dialog box
    again.
    ÑORÑ
    If you see ÒUpdate Device Driver WizardÓ, click Next to bypass the
    Windows
    ¨ Plug and Play Printer Driver screens, followed by Finish.
    If you are using Windows
    ¨ 98, you may see the ÒAdd New Hardware
    WizardÓ during startup, follow the instructions from the installer, then
    click Next. Click Finish when it appears on the screen.

    Installing Brother Printer Driver
    (For Parallel Interface)
    (For Windows¨ 95/98 and Windows NT¨ Workstation
    Version 4.0 Only)
    1Insert the Brother CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
    2Enter the command for your version of Windows¨, if needed.
    After you insert the Brother CD-ROM, you must type the appropriate
    command for your version of Windows
    ¨:
    If you are using Windows
    ¨ 95/98 or Windows NT¨ Workstation Version
    4.0, the Software Installation program appears automatically when you
    insert the Brother CD-ROM.
    ÑORÑ
    You can also click Start at the Desktop, select Run and then enter
    x:\SETUP.EXE.  (ÒxÓ is the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.)
     
    If you are using Windows¨ 3.1x:
    nInsert the Brother CD-ROM for the MFC 8300 printer driver into your
    CD-ROM drive.
    nFrom the Program Manager, click on File, then Run.
    nEnter x:\SETUP. (ÒxÓ is the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.)
    The Brother LOGO will be displayed on the screen.
     
    If you are using Windows NT¨ 3.51 or earlier, the following error message
    will appear on the screen:
    You are running Windows NT
    ¨ 3.51 or earlier.  Brother MFL Pro does not
    support this version of Windows NT¨. YOU MUST UPGRADE TO
    WINDOWS NT 4.0 AND REINSTALL MFL Pro!!
     
    If you are using Windows NT¨ Workstation 4.0 and you are not logged-in
    as the Administrator, an error message will appear explaining the problem.

    A window appears listing the options:
           
    For each application you install, click on that name in the Software
    Installation window and follow the instructions on the screen. The last
    step will be to restart Windows
    ¨ and access the Software Installation
    window again to install the next application.
    3Click on ÒInstall MFC Printer DriverÓ and follow the prompts on the
    screen.
