PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT 7-27 7 EAU23202 Checking and lubricating the sidestand The operation of the sidestand should be checked before each ride, and the sidestand pivot and metal-to-metal contact surfaces should be lubricated if necessary. WARNING EWA10731 If the sidestand does not move up and down smoothly, have a Yamaha dealer check or repair it. Otherwise, the sidestand could contact the ground and distract the operator, re-sulting in a possible loss of control. EAUM1650 Lubricating the swingarm piv- ots The swingarm pivots must be lubricat- ed at the intervals specified in the peri- odic maintenance and lubrication chart. EAU23272 Checking the front fork The condition and operation of the front fork must be checked as follows at the intervals specified in the periodic main- tenance and lubrication chart. To check the condition Check the inner tubes for scratches, damage and excessive oil leakage. To check the operation 1. Place the vehicle on a level sur- face and hold it in an upright posi- tion. WARNING! To avoid injury, securely support the vehicle so there is no danger of it falling over. [EWA10751] 2. While applying the front brake, push down hard on the handlebars several times to check if the front fork compresses and rebounds smoothly. Recommended lubricant: Lithium-soap-based grease Recommended lubricant: Lithium-soap-based grease U46B10E0.book Page 27 Tuesday, May 20, 2008 7:32 PM
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT 7-28 7 NOTICE ECA10590 If any damage is found or the front fork does not operate smoothly, have a Yamaha dealer check or re-pair it. EAU23283 Checking the steering Worn or loose steering bearings may cause danger. Therefore, the operation of the steering must be checked as fol- lows at the intervals specified in the pe- riodic maintenance and lubrication chart. 1. Place a stand under the engine to raise the front wheel off the ground. (See page 7-33 for more information.) WARNING! To avoid injury, securely support the vehicle so there is no danger of it falling over. [EWA10751] 2. Hold the lower ends of the front fork legs and try to move them for- ward and backward. If any free play can be felt, have a Yamaha dealer check or repair the steering. EAU23290 Checking the wheel bearings The front and rear wheel bearings must be checked at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrica- tion chart. If there is play in the wheel hub or if the wheel does not turn smoothly, have a Yamaha dealer check the wheel bearings. U46B10E0.book Page 28 Tuesday, May 20, 2008 7:32 PM
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT 7-29 7 EAU23312 Battery A poorly maintained battery will corrode and discharge quickly. The electrolyte level, battery lead connections and breather hose routing should be checked before each ride and at the in- tervals specified in the periodic mainte- nance and lubrication chart. To check the electrolyte level 1. Place the vehicle on a level sur- face and hold it in an upright posi- tion.TIPMake sure that the vehicle is positioned straight up when checking the electro-lyte level. 2. Check the electrolyte level in the battery.TIPThe electrolyte should be between theminimum and maximum level marks.3. If the electrolyte is at or below the minimum level mark, add distilled water to raise it to the maximum level mark. NOTICE: Use only distilled water, as tap water con- tains minerals that are harmful to the battery. [ECA10611] WARNING EWA10770 Electrolyte is poisonous and dangerous since it contains sul- furic acid, which causes severe burns. Avoid any contact with skin, eyes or clothing and al- ways shield your eyes whenworking near batteries. In case of contact, administer the fol- lowing FIRST AID. EXTERNAL: Flush with plenty of water. INTERNAL: Drink large quan- tities of water or milk and im- mediately call a physician. EYES: Flush with water for 15 minutes and seek prompt medical attention. Batteries produce explosive hy- drogen gas. Therefore, keep sparks, flames, cigarettes, etc., away from the battery and pro- vide sufficient ventilation when charging it in an enclosed space. Take care not to spill electrolyte on the drive chain, as this may weaken it, shorten chain life and possibly result in an accident. KEEP THIS AND ALL BATTER- IES OUT OF THE REACH OFCHILDREN. 4. Check and, if necessary, tighten the battery lead connections and correct the breather hose routing. 1. Maximum level mark 2. Minimum level mark U46B10E0.book Page 29 Tuesday, May 20, 2008 7:32 PM
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT 7-30 7 To store the battery 1. If the motorcycle will not be used for more than one month, remove the battery, fully charge it, and then place it in a cool, dry place. NOTICE: When removing the battery, be sure the key is turned to “OFF”, then discon- nect the negative lead before disconnecting the positive lead. [ECA16302] 2. If the battery will be stored for more than two months, check the specif- ic gravity of the electrolyte at least once a month and fully charge the battery whenever necessary.3. Fully charge the battery before in- stallation. 4. After installation, make sure that the battery leads are properly con- nected to the battery terminals and that the breather hose is properly routed, in good condition, and not obstructed. NOTICE: If the breather hose is positioned in such a way that the frame is ex- posed to electrolyte or gas ex- pelled from the battery, the frame could suffer structural and external damages. [ECA10601]EAU23601 Replacing the fuses The main fuse and the signaling sys- tem fuse holders are located under the rider seat. (See page 4-9.) If a fuse is blown, replace it as follows. 1. Turn the key to “OFF” and turn off the electrical circuit in question. 2. Remove the blown fuse, and then install a new fuse of the specified amperage. WARNING! Do not use a fuse of a higher amperage rating than recommended to avoid causing extensive dam- age to the electrical system and possibly a fire. [EWA15131] 1. Battery 2. Battery breather hose 1. If the headlight bulb burns out, replace it as follows.NOTICE ECA10660 Do not touch the glass part of the headlight bulb to keep it free from oil, otherwise the transparency of the glass, the luminosity of the bulb, and the bulb life will be adversely af- fected. Thoroughly clean off any dirt and fingerprints on the headlight bulb using a cloth moistened with al-cohol or thinner. 1. Remove the headlight unit by re- moving the screws.2. Disconnect the headlight coupler, and then remove the bulb cover. 3. Remove the headlight bulb holder by turning it counterclockwise, and then remove the burnt-out bulb. [ECA10681]EAU24350 Supporting the motorcycle Since this model is not equipped with a centerstand, follow these precautions when removing the front and rear wheel or performing other maintenance requiring the motorcycle to stand up- right. Check that the motorcycle is in a stable and level position before starting any maintenance. A strong wooden box can be placed under the engine for added stability. To service the front wheel 1. Stabilize the rear of the motorcycle by using a motorcycle stand or, if an additional motorcycle stand is not available, by placing a jack un- der the frame in front of the rear wheel. 2. Raise the front wheel off the ground by using a motorcycle stand.
