PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT 7-8 7 EAU18751 Removing and installing the panel The panel shown needs to be removed to perform some of the maintenance jobs described in this chapter. Refer to this section each time the panel needs to be removed and installed. EAU19510 Panel A To remove the panelPull the rear of the panel out, and then slide the panel forward to release it in the front. To install the panel Secure the front of the panel, and then push the rear of the panel in. EAU19544 Checking the spark plugs The spark plugs are important engine components, which are easy to check. Since heat and deposits will cause any spark plug to slowly erode, the spark plugs should be removed and checked in accordance with the periodic mainte- nance and lubrication chart. In addition, the condition of the spark plugs can re- veal the condition of the engine. To remove a spark plug 1. Remove the spark plug cap. 2. Remove the spark plug as shown, with the spark plug wrench includ- ed in the owner’s tool kit. 1. Panel A 1. Spark plug cap U46B10E0.book Page 8 Tuesday, May 20, 2008 7:32 PM
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT 7-9 7To check the spark plugs 1. Check that the porcelain insulator around the center electrode on each spark plug is a medium-to- light tan (the ideal color when the vehicle is ridden normally). 2. Check that all spark plugs installed in the engine have the same color. TIPIf any spark plug shows a distinctly dif- ferent color, the engine could be oper- ating improperly. Do not attempt to diagnose such problems yourself. In- stead, have a Yamaha dealer checkthe vehicle.3. Check each spark plug for elec- trode erosion and excessive car- bon or other deposits, and replace it if necessary. To install a spark plug 1. Measure the spark plug gap with a wire thickness gauge and, if nec- essary, adjust the gap to specifica- tion.2. Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket and its mating surface, and then wipe off any grime from the spark plug threads. 3. Install the spark plug with the spark plug wrench, and then tight- en it to the specified torque. TIPIf a torque wrench is not available when installing a spark plug, a good estimate of the correct torque is 1/4–1/2 turn past finger tight. However, the spark plug should be tightened to the speci-fied torque as soon as possible. 4. Install the spark plug cap. 1. Spark plug wrench Specified spark plug: NGK/C6HSA DENSO/U20FS-U1. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT 7-10 7 EAU19681 Canister (for California only) This model is equipped with a canister to prevent the discharging of fuel vapor into the atmosphere. Before operating this vehicle, make sure to check the fol- lowing: Check each hose connection. Check each hose and canister for cracks or damage. Replace if dam- aged. Make sure that the canister breath- er is not blocked, and if necessary, clean it. EAU42102 Engine oil and oil filter ele- ment The engine oil level should be checked before each ride. In addition, the oil must be changed and the oil filter ele- ment replaced at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubri- cation chart. To check the engine oil level 1. Place the vehicle on a level sur- face and hold it in an upright posi- tion. A slight tilt to the side can result in a false reading. 2. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. 3. Wait a few minutes until the oil set- tles, and then check the oil level through the check window located at the bottom-right side of the crankcase.TIPThe engine oil should be between theminimum and maximum level marks. 1. To change the engine oil (with or without oil filter element replace- ment) 1. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. 2. Place an oil pan under the engine to collect the used oil. 3. Remove the engine oil filler cap and drain bolt to drain the oil from the crankcase. TIPSkip steps 4–6 if the oil filter element isnot being replaced. 4. Remove the oil filter element cover by removing the screws.5. Remove and replace the oil filter element and O-ring. 6. Refill with the specified amount of the recommended engine oil, and then install and tighten the oil filler cap. TIPBe sure to wipe off spilled oil on any parts after the engine and exhaust sys-tem have cooled down.NOTICE ECA11620 In order to prevent clutch slip- page (since the engine oil also lubricates the clutch), do not mix any chemical additives. Do not use oils with a diesel speci- fication of “CD” or oils of a high- er quality than specified. In addition, do not use oils labeled “ENERGY CONSERVING II” or higher. Make sure that no foreign mate-rial enters the crankcase.9. Start the engine, and then let it idle for several minutes while checking it for oil leakage. If oil is leaking, im- mediately turn the engine off and check for the cause. 10. Turn the engine off, and then check the oil level and correct it if necessary.
