    5.media and tray
This chapter provides information on how to l oad originals and print media into your machine.
    This chapter includes:
    •Selecting print media
    • Changing the tray size
    • Loading paper in tray •
    Printing on special media
    • Setting the default tray and paper

    SELECTING PRINT MEDIA
You can print on a variety of print me dia, such as plain paper, envelopes,
labels. Always use print media that meet the guidelines for use with your
    machine.
Guidelines to select the print media
Print media that does not meet the gui delines outlined in this user’s guide
    may cause the following problems:
    • Poor print quality
    • Increased paper jams
    • Premature wear on the machine.
    Pro
perties, such as weight, compositio n,
      grain and moisture content, are
important factors that affect the machine’s performance and the output qual -
ity. When you choose print materials, consider the following:
    • The
type, size and weight of the print media for your machine are
    describe
d in print media specifications (See Print media specifications
    on page 110 ).
    • Desired outcome: Th
e print media you choose should be appropriate for
    your project.
    • Bri
ghtness: Some print media are whiter than others and produce
    sharpe
     r, more vibrant images.
    • Surface smoothness: The smoothness of the print media affects how
    cri

sp the printing looks on the paper.
•Some print media may meet all of the guidelines in this section and
still not produce satisfactory result s. This may be the result of
improper handling, unacceptable te mperature and humidity levels,
or other variables over which cannot be controlled.
    • Befo
re purchasing large quantities of print media, ensure that it
    me
ets the requirements specifications in this user’s guide and
    meets your output requirements.

    • Using print media that does not meet these specifications may
cause problems, requiring repairs. Such repairs are not covered by
    the warranty or service agreements.
    • Using inflammable print media can cause a fire.
    • Use desig nated prin
t media (See Print media specifications on
    page 110 ).

The use of inflammable media or foreign materials left in the printer
may lead to overheating of the unit and, in rare cases may cause a
    fire.
The amount of paper put into the tray may differ according to media type
    u s

ed (See Print media specifications on page 110).

    Multi-purpose tray
The multi-purpose tray can hold special sizes and types of print material,
such as postcards, note cards, and envelopes. It is useful for single page
printing on letterhead or colored paper , please check maxi mum sheets you
can load based on thickness (See Print media specifications on
    page 110).
Tips on using the multi-purpose tray
•Load only one type, size and weight of print media at time in the
    multi-purpose tray.
    • To
prevent paper jams, do not add p aper
     while printing when there is
still paper in the multi-purpose tray. This also applies to other types
    of print media.
    • Alwa ys load the specified print media only to avoid paper jams and
    prin
t quality problems. (See Print media specifications on page
    110.)
    • Fla
tten any curl on postcards, envelopes, and labels before loading
    th
     em into the multi-purpose tray.
    1. Hold the handle of multi-purpose tray and pull it down to open and
    pull
out the multi-purpos e tray paper extension .
    3
2.Flex or fan the edge of the paper stack to separate the pages before
    loading paper.
    3. Place paper with the side you want to print facing up.
•When printing the special media, you must follow the load -
ing guideline. (See Printing on special media on page 47 .)
    • Wh
en papers overlap when printing using Multi-purpose
    tra
y, open tray 1 and remove overlapping papers then try
    printing again.
    • When paper does not feed well while printing, push the
    pap

When you use recycled paper as a used paper, printouts might be
wrinkled and/or jamming may occur due to excessive curl.
    Envelope
Successful printing on envelopes depends upon the quality of the enve -
    lopes.
To print an envelope, place it flap si d
    e
up with the stamp area bottom the
    top right side.
    • When selecting envelopes, consider the following factors:
    -Wei ght: Th
e weight of the envelope paper should not exceed
90 g/m2 otherwise, jam may occur.
    - Construction: Pri
or to printing, envelopes should lie flat with less
    than a 7 mm
curl and should not contain air.
    - Co
    ndition: Env
elopes should not be wrinkled, nicked, either dam -
    aged.
    - Temperature: Use enve
lopes that are compatible with th e heat and
pressure of the machine during operation.
    • U
se only well-constructed envelopes with sharp-and well-creased folds.
    • Do not use stamped envelopes.
    • Do not use envelopes with clasps, snaps, windows, coated lining,
    self-
adhesive seals, or other synthetic materials.
    • D
o not use damaged or poorly made envelopes.
    • Be sure the seam at both ends of the envelope extends all the way to
    the
      corner of the envelope.

fusing temperature about 170°C (338 °F) for 0.1 second. The extra flaps
and strips might cause wrinkling, creasing, or jams and may even dam -
    age the fuser.
    • For the best print qual ity, posi
tion margins no closer than 15 mm from
    the edge
    s of the envelope.
    • Avo
id printing over the area where the envelope’s seams meet.
    Transparency
To avoid damaging the machine, use on ly transparencies designed for use
    in laser printers.
    • Transparencies used in the mach ine must be able to withstand
    machine’s fusing temperature.
    • Place them on a flat
surface after removing them from the machine.
    • Do n ot leave unused transparencies in the paper tray for long periods of
    ti
me. Dust and dirt may accumulate on them, resulting in spotty printing.
    • To avo
id smudging caused by fingerprints, handle them carefully.
    • To a void fading, do not expose printed transparencies to prolonged sun -
    ligh
     t.
    • Ensure
    that transp
arencies are not wrinkled, curled, or have any torn
    edges.
    • Do not use tran
sparencies that separates from the backing sheet.
    • To prevent transparencies from sticking to each other, do not let the
    p
rinted sheets stack up as they are begin printed out.
    • Base
type transparency (ex. Xerox 3R3117) results in better image and
    pap
er handling quality than paper backed (ex. Xerox 3R3028) or remov -
    able stripe (3R3108) ones.

Depending on the selection or st orage conditions of the transpar-
ency, jam or image scratch might occur.
    Labels
To avoid damaging the machine, use on ly labels designed for use in laser
    machines.
    • When selecting labels, consider the following factors:
    -Adhesives: Th
e adhesive material should be stable at your
    machine’s fu
    sing temperature about 170°C (338 °F). -
    Arra
    ngement: Onl
y use labels with no exposed backing between
    them. La
bels can peel off sheets that have spaces between the
    labels, causing serious jams.
    - Cur l: Prior to
printing, labels must lie flat with no more than 13 mm
    of curl in any direction.
    - Co
    ndition: D
o not use labels with wrinkl es, bubbl es, or other indica-
    tions of separation.
    • Do not use labels with slick back.
    • Do not use partially used labels.
    • Do not use the labels with separated edges.
    • Make sure that there is no exposed adhesive material between labels.
    Exp
osed areas can cause labels to peel off during printing, which can
cause paper jams. Exposed adhesive can also cause damage to
    machine components.
    • D
o not run a sheet of labels through the machine more than once. The
    a
dhesive backing is designed for only a single pass through the
    machine.
    • D
o not use labels that are separating from the backing sheet or are wrin-
    kl
     ed, bubbled, or otherwise damaged.
    Card stock/Cust om-sized paper
•Do not print on media smaller than 76.2 mm (3 inches) wide or 127 mm
    (5 inches) long.
    • In the software appl
ication, set margins at least 6.4 mm (0.25 inches)
    aw
ay from the edges of the material.
    • U
sable minimum weight of 3*5 inches paper is 105g/m². (28 lbs bond)
    • Ensure that 76.2 mm
(3 inches) X 127 mm (5 inches) is not curled or has
    no
torn edges. Depending on the curl of 76.2 mm (3 inches) X 127 mm
    (5

    inches) paper, jam might occur.
