    This user’s guide provides information about how to use the machine. Both novice and professional users can refer to this 
    as a guide for installing and using the machine.

    • The procedures in this user’s guide are mainly based on Windows XP.
    CONVENTION
    Some terms in this guide are used interchangeably, as below:

    Your new machine is equipped with a number of special  features that improve the quality of the documents you print.
    SPECIAL FEATURES
    Print with excellent quality and speed
    •You can print with a resolution of up to 1,200 x 1,200 dpi 
    effective output.
    • ML-551
    x Series prints A4-sized paper at up to 52 ppm, and 
    letter-sized pa
     per at up to 55 ppm. 
    • ML-651
    x Series prints A4-sized paper at up to 62 ppm, and 
    letter-sized pa
     per at up to 65 ppm. 
    Handle many different types of printable material
    • The multi-purpose tray supports  special types of print media 
    in various sizes.
    • The tray 1 and optional trays  supp
     ort plain paper in various 
    sizes (See  Print me
    dia specifications on page  110).
    Create professional documents (Windows only)
    • Print Watermarks. You can cust omize your documents with 
    words, such as “Confidential” (See Using watermarks on 
    page  55).
    • Print Po sters. 
     The text and pictures of each page of your 
    document are magnified and printed across the sheet of 
    paper and can then be taped together to form a poster (See 
    Printing posters on page  53 ).
    • You 
    can use preprinted forms with plain paper (See 
     Using 
    overlay (PCL driver only) on page  55).
    Save time and money
    • To save paper, you can print multiple pages on one single 
    sheet of paper (See  Printing multiple pages on one sheet of 
    paper on page  53).
    • This machine automatically conserves electricity by substan -
    ti
     ally reducing power consumption when not in use.
    • To
     save paper, you can print on both sides of the paper (dou -
    ble
     -sided printing). For some models, you need to install an 
    optio nal du
    
    plex unit to use the duplex feature (See  Printing 
    on both sides of paper on page  54 ).
    Expand your machine’s capacity
    • Your machine has an extra memory slot to expand the mem -
    ory (See Available accessories on page  97).
    Print in various environments
    • You can print with various operating system such as Win -
    dows, Linux, Mac, and UNIX (See  System requirements on 
    page  31).

    machine is equipped with a USB, Parallel (optional),

      a network interface.
    Use USB flash memory devices
    If you have a USB memory device, you can use it in various

    Shows the current status and

    UNDERSTANDING THE CONTROL PANEL
    Status LEDs
    The color of the LEDs indicates the machines current status.

    Off The machine is off-line.

    • The machine is receiving data from a

    he machine is printing data.

    lid green The machine is online and can receive data 
    from a computer.
    Solid red •The cover is open. Close the cover.
    • There is no paper in the tray. Load paper

     n the tray.
    • The machine has stopped due to a major 
    error.
    • The machine is experiencing system 
    p
    
    roblems requiring service, such as LSU 
    error, fuser error, or  ITB error. Contact 
    the service representative.
    • A tone
    r cartridge has almost reached its 
    e
     stimated cartridge lifea
    a. Estimated cartridge life means th e expected or estimated toner car-
    tridge life, which indicates the average capacity of print-outs and is de -
    signed pursuant to ISO/IEC  19752. The number of pages may be 
    affected by operat
    
    ing environment, printing interval, graphics, media 
    type and media size. Some amount of toner may remain in the car -
    tridge even when red LED is on  and the printe
     r stops printing.. It is recom
    -
    mended to replace the toner cartridge 
    (See  Replacing the toner cartridge on 
    page  98).
    • T
    he machine cannot recognize the sta-
    tus of ton
     er cartridges and the supplies 
    i n
    
    formation. Open and close the cover 
    and check if the machine can operate 
    properly. If the problem persists, turn the 
    power off and on.
    Blinks red •A minor error has occurred and the 
    ma
     chine is waiting for the error to be 
    cleared. When the problem is cleared, 
    the machine resumes.
    • A small amou
    nt 
     of toner is left in the car -
    tridge. The estimated cartridge lifea of 
    toner is close. Prepare a new cartridge 
    for repl acement. 
    
    You may temporarily 
    increase the printing quality by redistrib -
    uting the toner in the cartridge 
    (See  Redistributing toner on page  76 ).
    Lights 
    orange A paper jam has occurred (See 
    Clearing 
    paper jams on page  77 ).
     
    Samsung does not recommend using non-genuine Samsung toner 
    cartridge such as one that is ref illed or remanufactured. Samsung can -
    not guarantee a non-genuine Samsung  tone
    r cartridg
     es quality. Ser-
    vice or repair required as a result of using non-genuine Samsung 
    ton e
    r cartridges will not be covered under the machine warranty. 
     All printing errors will be appear in the Smart Panel program window. If 
    the problem persists, call for service (See  Using the Smart Panel pro-
    gram on page  69 ).
    INTRODUCING THE  USEFUL BUTTONS
    Menu button 
    When you want to know the machine status and set your machine to use an 
    advanced feature, press the  Menu button (See  Machine status and 
    advanced features on page  64 ).
    Eco button
    You can turn the Eco mode on or off by  simply pressing the button. You can 
    set the Eco mode settings from the SyncThru™ Web Service (see  Eco on 
    page  69). 
    1. Press the Eco  
     button on the control panel.
    2. The LED on the button lights on. Then, Eco mode is on.
    T
     o turn off Eco mode, press Eco button one more time.
    Stop/Clear button 
    By pressing the , you can:

    Power button 
    When you want to turn the power on/off, press this button  Power Down win-
    dow pops up. Choose Yes,  to turn th

    2.getting started
    This chapter gives you step-by-step  instructions for setting up the USB connected machine and software.
    This chapter includes:
    •Setting up the hardware
    • Printing a demo page
    • Supplied software •
    System requirements
    • Installing locally connected machine’s driver
      
     Supported optional devices and features may differ according to your 
    model. Please check your model name (See  Features by Models on 
    page  25).
    SETTING UP THE HARDWARE
    This section shows the steps to set up the hardware, as is explained in the 
    Quick Installation Guide. Make sure you read the Quick Installation Guide 
    first and follow the steps below:
    1. Select a stab le loca
     tion.
    Select a level, stable place with adeq uate space for a
     ir circulation. Allow 
    extra space to open covers and trays. 
    The area should be well ventilated and away from direct sunlight or 
    sources of  he
    
    at, cold, and humidity. Do  not set the machine close to the 
    edge of your desk or table.
    Printing is suitable for altitudes under 1,000 m (3,281 ft.). Refer to the 
    altitude setting to optimize your printing (See  Altitude adjustment on 
    page  42).
    Place the machine on a flat, stable su rface so that 
     there is no incline 
    greater than 2 cm (0.79 inch). Ot herwise, printing quality may be 
    affected.

    Unpack the machine and check all the enclosed items.
    3. Remove the tape.
    4. Install  all the necessary items su ch
      as toner cartridge and optional 
    goods.  (See Supplies and accessories on page  97 ).
    5. Load paper (See  Lo
     ading paper in tray on page  46 ).
    6. Make  sure that all cables are connected to the machine. 
    7. Turn the machine on.
     
    • This equipment will be inoperable when mains power fails.
    • When you move the machine, do not tilt or turn it upside down. 
    Otherwise
     , the inside of the ma chine may be contaminated by 
    toner, which can cause damage to the machine or bad printing 
    quality.
    PRINTING A DEMO PAGE
    Print a demo page to make sure that the machine is operating properly.
    1. Pres s Menu  on the control pa
     nel.
    2. Press the up/down arrow to highlight  In
     formation and press  OK.
    3. Press the up/down arrow to highlight  Demo Page a
     ppears and press 
    OK .
    4. W
    hen  Print?  app
     ears, press OK.
    The machine starts to print a demo page.
    SUPPLIED SOFTWARE
    After you have set up your machine and  connected it to your computer, you 
    must install the printer software. If you are a Windows or Mac OS, install the 
    software from the supplied CD and if  you are a Linu
     x or a UNIX OS user, 
    download the software from the Samsung website (www.sam -
    sung.com/printer) and install.
     Machine software are occasionally updated due to release of new 
    operating system and etc.  If needed, download the latest version from 
    the Samsung website. (www.samsung.com/printer)
