Changing Your Settings 124 To activate Smart Screen: The Smart screen options allow you to customize your screen settings to make the screen more responsive and easier to use.1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Controls. 2. In a single motion touch and slide the Smart screen slider to the right to turn it on. 3. Tap any of the following options to create a checkmark and activate the features: : disables the screen timeout if your phone detects that your face is watching the screen. Smart rotation: disables the auto screen rotation by checking the orientation of your face and the device. Smart pause: pauses videos when your device detects that your head has moved away from the screen. Smart scroll: once your eyes have been detected, the screen will scroll according to your device’s tilt angle. Tap the adjacent field to the right of the Smart scroll field to activate the feature. With Smart scroll, the screen will scroll depending on the phone’s tilt angle once your eyes have been detected. To Increase touch sensitivity: Activating this feature allows you to increase the screen’s sensitivity to touching while wearing gloves. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ Controls. 2. Place a check mark alongside the Increase touch sensitivity field to turn it on. Add Account This menu allows you to set up, manage, and synchronize accounts, including your Google and email accounts. Adding an Account 1. From a Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Accounts ➔ Add account. 2. Tap one of the account types. 3. Use the keyboard and follow the prompts to enter your credentials and set up the account. A green circle will appear next to the account type once you have created an account. Your account will also be displayed in the My accounts section of the main Accounts menu. 125 Removing an Account Important! Removing an account also deletes all of its messages, contacts, and other data from the device. 1. From a Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Accounts. 2. Tap the account which is located in the My accounts section. 3. Tap the account name. 4. At the bottom of the screen, tap Remove account, then tap Remove account at the prompt to remove the account and delete all its messages, contacts, and other data. Synchronizing Accounts Select the items you want to synchronize on your account such as Books, Calendar, Contacts, and more. 1. From a Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Accounts. 2. Tap the account which is located in the My accounts section. 3. Tap the account name. 4. Ta p Sync now to synchronize your account or only tap the Sync items that you want to synchronize. 5. Ta p Cancel sync to stop the synchronization. 6. Ta p Account settings to access your account settings. 7. Ta p Storage usage to see your storage usage for different applications. Backup and reset The Back up and reset settings allow you to back up your data, back up accounts, automa tically restore your phone, and reset your phone settings to the factory settings. Back Up My Data By setting this option, the Google server will back up all of your settings and data. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Back up and reset. 2. Ta p Back up my data to enable or disable back up of application data, WI-Fi passwords, and other settings to the Google server. General General General
Changing Your Settings 126 Backup Account If you have enabled the Back up my data option, then the Backup account option is available. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Back up and reset. 2. Ta p Backup account and tap your Google Gmail account or tap Add account to set your Google Gmail account to be backed up to the Google server. Automatic Restore By setting this option, when you reinstall an application, all of your backed up settings and data will be restored. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Back up and reset. 2. Ta p Automatic restore to enable or disable automatic restoration of settings from the Google server. Factor y Data Reset From this menu you can reset yo ur phone and sound settings to the factory default settings. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Back up and reset. 2. Ta p Factory data reset. The Factory data reset screen displays reset information. 3. Ta p Reset device, then follow the prompts to perform the reset. Warning! Performing a Factory data reset will erase all data from your phone and internal SD card, including your Google account, system and application data and settings, and downloaded applications. It will not erase current system software, bundled applications, and external SD card files such as music and photos. Date and time This menu allows you to change the current time and date displayed. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Date and time. 2. Ta p Automatic date and time to allow the network to set the date and time. 3. Ta p Automatic time zone to allow the network to set the time zone. General General General General
127 Important! Deactivate Automatic date and time to manually set the rest of the options. 4. Ta p Set date and tap the up and down arrows to set the Month, Day, and Ye a r then tap Set. 5. Ta p Set time and tap the up and down arrows to set the Hour, Minute, and PM/AM, then tap Set. 6. Ta p Select time zone, then tap a time zone. 7. Optional: Tap Use 24-hour format. If this is not selected the phone automatically uses a 12-hour format. 8. Ta p Select date format and tap the date format type. Accessor y Settings This menu allows you to select the Audio output mode when using a car or desk dock. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Accessory. 2. Ta p Dock sound to play sounds when inserting or removing the phone from the dock. 3. Ta p Audio output mode to use the external dock speakers when the phone is docked. 4. Ta p Desk home screen display to display the desk home screen whenever the phone is docked. 5. Ta p Automatic unlock if you are using a phone cover and you want your phone to unlock when you open the cover. 6. Ta p S View window color to set the window color when you are using the optional S View protective cover. 7. Ta p Select info shown cover to select the information that you want displayed when you are using the optional S View protective cover. 8. Ta p Audio output to set your Audio output to Stereo or Surround. Browser Bar The Browser Bar enhances your browsing experience by providing contextual tools and quick access to your favorite content. 1. From a Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Browser Bar. 2. Select an option and follow the on-screen instructions to set up or modify your Browser Bar. General General
Changing Your Settings 128 Application Manager You can download and install applications from Play Store or create applications using the Android SDK and install them on your device. Use Application manager settings to manage applications. Warning! Because this device can be configured with system software not provided by or supported by Google or any other company, end-users operate these devices at their own risk. Memor y Usage See how memory is being used by Downloaded or Running applications. 1. From a Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Application manager. 2. Ta p DOWNLOADED, SD CARD, RUNNING, or ALL to display memory usage for that category of applications. The graph at the bottom of the Downloaded tab shows used and free device memory . The graph at the bottom of the Running tab shows used and free RAM. Downloaded Displays apps you have downloaded onto your device. 1. From a Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Application manager. 2. Ta p t h e DOWNLOADED tab to view a list of all the downloaded applicatio ns on your device. 3. To switch the order of th e lists displayed in the Downloaded tabs, press ➔ Sort by size or Sort by name . 4. To reset your application preferences, press ➔ Reset app preferences. Note: This will reset the preferences for disabled apps, disabled app notifications, default applications for actions, and background data restrictions for apps. You will not lose any app data. 5. Tap an application to view and update information about the application, including memory usage, default settings, and permissions. General General
129 SD Card Displays apps you have downloaded onto your SD card. 1. From a Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Application manager. 2. Ta p t h e SD CARD tab to view a list of all the downloaded applications on your device. 3. To switch the order of the lists displayed in the On SD card tab, press ➔ Sort by size or Sort by name. 4. To reset your application preferences, press ➔ Reset app preferences. Note: When you Reset app preferences, you will not lose any app data. 5. Tap an application to view and update information about the application, including memory usage, default settings, and permissions. Running Ser vices View and control services running on your device. 1. From a Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Application manager. 2. Ta p t h e RUNNING tab. All the applications that are currently running on the device display. 3. Ta p Show cached processes to display all the cached processes that are running. Tap Show services in use to switch back. 4. Tap one of the applications to view application information. The following options display: : Stops the application from running on the device. This is usually done prior to uninstalling the application. Warning! Not all services can be stopped. Stopping services may have undesirable consequences on the application or Android System. : Report failure and other application information. Note: Options vary by application. GeneralGeneral
Changing Your Settings 130 Batter y See how much battery power is used for device activities.1. From a Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Battery . The battery level displays in percentage. The amount of time the battery was used also displays. Battery usage displays in percentages per application. 2. Ta p Screen, Android OS, Cell standby or any other listed application to view how it is affecting battery use. Note: Other applications may be running that affect battery use. 3. From the upper-right tap ( Refresh) to update the list. 4. Ta p t h e Show battery percentage check box to have the battery percentage displayed on your battery charge icon on your status bar. Power saving mode Power saving mode allows yo u to manage your phone to conserve power. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Power saving mode. 2. Ta p t h e OFF / ON icon next to Power saving mode to turn Power saving mode on . 3. Tap the following options to create a checkmark and conserve power: CPU power saving: allows you to limit the maximum performance of the CPU. Screen power saving: allows you to lower the screen power level. Turn off haptic feedback: allows you to turn off vibration when you tap or touch the screen. : automatically turns on Power saving mode when the battery falls below 20% even if Power saving mode is off. 4. 131 Storage From this menu you can view the memory allocation for the memory card and USB as well as mount or unmount the SD card. For more information about moun ting or unmounting the SD card, see “Memory Card” on page 43. To view the memory allocation for your external SD card: From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Storage .The available memory displays under the To t a l s p a c e and Available space headings for both Device memory and SD card. SD card Ta p Unmount SD card to unmount your SD card so that you can safely remove it, then tap OK. – or – 1. Ta p Format SD card to format your SD card. This will delete all data on your SD card including music, videos, and photos. 2. Ta p Format SD card again. 3. Ta p Delete all to continue or press to cancel. Note: The Format SD card option is only available when your SD card is mounted. Security The Security settings allow you to determine the security level for your phone. Encr yption To require a numeric PIN or password to decrypt your phone each time you power it on or encrypt the data on your SD card each time it is connected: 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Security. 2. You must first set up a screen lock type if you haven’t already done so. For more information, refer to “Screen Lock” on page 100. 3. Ta p Encrypt device. For more information, read the displayed help screen. 4. Ta p Encrypt external SD card to enable the encryption on SD card data that requires a password be entered each time the microSD card is connected. General General
Changing Your Settings 132 Tip: Make sure your battery is charged more than 80 percent. Encryption may take an hour or more. Set up/change password Use this option to set up your password when one is first required or change your current password. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Security ➔ Set up/change password. 2. Enter a new password and tap Confirm. 3. Enter the new password again and tap Confirm. Set up SIM card lock Prevent another user from us ing your SIM card to make unauthorized calls or from a ccessing information stored on your SIM card by protecting the information using a PIN code. When enabled, your phone will ask for a PIN number each time you use the phone. Using this option you can also change your SIM PIN number. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Security. 2. Ta p Set up SIM card lock. 3. Ta p Lock SIM card, enter your SIM PI N code, then tap OK. Note: You must activate Lock SIM card before you can change your SIM PIN code. 4. Ta p Change SIM PIN. 5. Enter your old SIM PIN code and tap OK. 6. Enter your new SIM PIN code and tap OK. 7. Re-type your new SIM PIN code and tap OK. Forgotten SIM PIN password If you enter the wrong SIM PIN more than 3 times, you will need to contact your AT&T Customer Service Representative to get the PUK code for your device. 1. Each time you enter a wrong SIM PIN number the phone will display how many attempts you have remaining. 2. After the third incorrect attempt, SIM is now disabled, Enter PUK code to continue. Contact carrier for details displays and your SIM card is locked. General General
1333. Enter the new PUK code that you received from your AT&T Customer Service Representative in the PUK code field. 4. Enter a new PIN code in the Enter a new PIN field and tap OK. 5. Enter the new PIN code again in the Confirm your new PIN field and tap OK. Note: While your SIM PIN is locked, you will still be able to make Emergency calls if necessary. Make passwords visible When enabled, password characters display briefly as you touch them while entering passwords. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Security. 2. Ta p Make passwords visible to create a checkmark and enable or disable the displa y of password characters. Device Administrators The Device Administration feature allows you to select one or more administration applications that control your device for security purposes (for example, if your phone is lost of stolen). These applications enforce remote or local device security policies. Some of the features a device administration application might control are: Setting the number of failed password attempts before the device is restored to factory settings. Automatically locking the device. Restoring factory settings on the device. Note: If a device uses multiple enabled administration applications, the strictest policy is enforced. 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Settings ➔ General ➔ Security. 2. Ta p Device administrators. 3. Select a device administrator and follow the prompts. If no device administrators ar e listed, you can download them from the Play Store. General General
