Exposure Program (Mode P)
The exposure program for mode P is shown in the following graph:
The maximum and minimum values for EV vary with ISO sensitivity; the above graph 
assumes an ISO sensitivity of ISO 100 equivalent.
 When matrix metering is used, 
values over 161/3EV are reduced to 161/3EV.

Troubleshooting
If the camera fails to function as expected, check the list of common problems below 
before consulting your retailer or Nikon-authorized service representative.
Battery/Display
The camera is on but does not respond : Wait for recording to end. If the problem persists, turn the 
camera off. If the camera does not turn off, remove and reinsert the battery or, if you are using 
an AC adapter, disconnect and reconnect the AC adapter. Note that although any data

Shooting (All Modes)
Camera takes time to turn on: Delete files or folders.
Shutter-release disabled :
• Memory card is locked, full, or not inserted ( 029, 31).
• Release locked  is selected for Custom Setting f7 ( Slot empty release lock; 0 246) and no 
memory card is inserted ( 032).
• Built-in flash is charging ( 039).
• Camera is not in focus ( 038).
• CPU lens with aperture ring attached but ap erture not locked at highest f-number. If 
B is 
displayed in control panel, select  Aperture ring...

Noise (bright spots, randomly-spaced bright pixels, fog, or lines) appear in photos:
• Choose lower ISO sensitivity or use high ISO noise reduction ( 0105, 218).
• Shutter speed is slower than 1 s: us e long exposure noise reduction (0218).
• Turn Active D-Lighting off to avoid heightening the effects of noise ( 0137).
AF-assist illuminator does not light :
• AF-assist lamp does not light if  AF-C is selected for autofocus mode ( 097) or if continuous-
servo autofocus is selected when the camera is...

Shooting (P, S, A, M)
Shutter-release disabled:
• Non-CPU lens is attached: rotate camera mode dial to  A or  M (0 288).
• Mode dial rotated to  S after shutter speed of  A selected in mode  M: choose new shutter 
speed ( 076).
Full range of shutter speeds not available : Flash in use.
 Flash sync speed can be selected using 
Custom Setting e1 ( Flash sync speed); when using compatible flash units, choose  1/250 s 
(Auto FP)  or 1/200 s (Auto FP)  for full range of shutter speeds ( 0234).

Playback
NEF (RAW) image is not played back: Photo was taken at image quality of NEF + JPEG ( 093).
Can not view pictures reco rded with other cameras: Pictures recorded with other makes of camera may 
not be displayed correctly.
Message is displayed stating that no  images are available for playback: Select All for  Playback folder  
( 0 207).
“Tall” (portrait) orientation photos are displayed in “wide” (landscape) orientation :
• Select  On for  Rotate tall  (0 212).

Miscellaneous
Date of recording is not correct: Set camera clock (027, 253).
Menu item can not be selected : Some options are not available at  certain combinations of settings 
or when no memory card is inserted. Note that  Battery info option is not available when 
camera is powered by an optional EP-5B power connector and EH-5b AC adapter ( 0255).
