    SMS and Two-Way
    MessagesSMS MessagesShort Message Service (SMS) messages are short
    text messages, also called text and numeric
    messages. You can send SMS messages through
    any email account or on www.nextel.com.
    Your phone receives SMS messages sent to its
    SMS address, but does not send SMS messages.
    Your phones SMS address is your
    [email protected].
    If your phone is powered off when you receive a
    message, your phone notifies you the next time
    you power it on. If you are out of your coverage
    area, your phone alerts you when you return to
    your coverage area.
    Your phone attempts to deliver these messages for
    up to 7 days.Receiving a MessageWhen you receive a text and numeric message,
    New Text Messageappears on the display.To view the message:
    1PressAunderRead.
    2Ifthemessagefillsmorethanonescreen,scroll
    to read it.
    3To keep the message, pressO.-or-
    To delete the message, scroll to the end of the
    message, then pressAunderDelete.
    To dismiss the message notification:
    If the flip is closed, press..-or-
    If the flip is open, pressAunderBackor close
    the flip.
    This icon

    appears on the display, reminding
    you that you have a new message.
    Reading from the Message Center1From the main menu, selectMessages > SMS.

    							74SMS and Two-Way MessagesCalling and Storing NumbersIf an SMS message you receive contains a phone
    number, you can call that number by pressings
    while viewing the message.
    If an SMS message you receive contains a phone
    number, Direct Connect number, or Talkgroup ID,
    you can call or send a call alert to that number, or
    store that number to Contacts. Pressmwhile
    viewing the message to access these options.
    To call the number, selectCall Back.
    To send a call alert, selectAlert,thenpressthe
    PTT button.
    To store the number to Contacts, selectStore
    Number.Two-Way Messages and Net
    AlertsTwo-Way messages can be sent and received
    through any email account and on
    www.nextel.com. Your phone sends and receives
    Two-Way messages through Nextel Online
    services.
    Your phones Two-Way Messaging address is your
    [email protected] you receive a Two-Way message, your
    phone notifies you with a Net alert. Each Net alert
    lets you view the Two-Way message associated
    with it.
    Net alerts appear in the message center. Two-Way
    messages appear in the Nextel Online services
    browser.
    Receiving a MessageWhen you receive a Two-Way message, a Net
    alert notification appears on the display.
    To view the message:
    PressAunderGoto.
    This lets you read the message through Nextel
    Online services.
    To dismiss the Net alert notification:
    If the flip is closed, press..-or-
    If the flip is open, pressAunderBackor close
    the flip.

    Accessing Two-Way MessagesFrom Nextel Online Services
    1From the main menu, selectNet > Text
    Messaging > Read Messages > Message
    Inbox.
    2Selectthemessageyouwanttoview.
    From the Message Center
    1From the main menu, selectMessages > Net
    Alert.
    2PressO.
    This takes you to your Message Inbox and lets
    you read messages through Nextel Online
    services.
    3Selectthemessageyouwanttoview.Deleting Net AlertsWhen you delete a Net alert, the Two-Way
    message is not deleted, but it is no longer
    accessible through the message center. You can
    still access the message through Nextel Online
    services.
    1From the main menu, selectMessages.
    2WithNet Alerthighlighted, pressO.
    3PressAunderDelete

    Sending Two-Way MessagesTosendaTwo-Waymessagefromyourphone:
    1From the main menu, selectNet > Text
    Messaging > Send Message.
    2Ifyouaresendingthemessagetoanew
    address, selectNew Address.-or-
    Ifyouaresendingthemessagetoanaddress
    you already sent a message to, selectSent
    Address.
    To send a message to a new address:
    1Enter the phone number or email address of the
    person you are sending the message to.
    Note:Use the right option key to switch between
    text entry modes.
    2PressAunderOk.
    3SelectCompose Newto compose and send a
    new message.-or-
    SelectSentto send a previously sent message.
    Scroll to the sent message you want to send and
    pressAunderOk.

    ®
    Services
    You can use your phone’s Net feature to access a
    suite of wireless data products known as Nextel
    Online (NOL) services. Services include Two-Way
    Messaging, Web and Premium Web, Address
    Book, Mobile Email, and wireless access to AOL
    ®
    Instant Messenger
    TM.
    With the exception of the Two-Way Messaging
    Express service, Nextel Online* services require
    the activation of a Nextel Online service plan. To
    order, call 1-800-NEXTEL6 or contact your Nextel
    sales representative.
    * Nextel Online is only available in the continental United States.NOL ServicesTwo-Way Messaging — Discretely send and
    receive text messages via your Nextel phone,
    any email address, or www.nextel.com with
    Two-Way Messaging. For customers who
    purchased a Free Incoming plan, there is a
    nominal charge for each message sent and
    received. Or, customers have the option of
    subscribing to a Two-Way Messaging Premier
    package for enhanced functionality and
    unlimited messaging.
    Web — access the wireless Internet from your
    Nextel phone.Premium Web — access any site on the
    wireless Internet, conduct topic and keyword
    searches, bookmark sites and applications, and
    customize your phones browser menu.
    Address Book — program your Contacts from
    the Internet.
    Mobile Email — access and send email from
    your Nextel phone.
    AOL
    ®Instant Messenger
    TM—send andreceive
    instant messages in real–time through a
    handset-based interface.
    Accessing NOL Services
    From Your PhoneYou must first enable security on your phone to
    receive NOL services. See “Enabling Security” on
    page 7.
    1Pressmto access the main menu and select
    Net.
    Your NOL home page displays.
    2Choose the service you want to access.
    To access your Two-Way Messaging Service:
    Select the Text Messaging application from the

    Tip:While navigating through Nextel Online
    screens, a number may appear to the left of
    the application or topic you want to access.
    Press the corresponding number on the
    keypad for quicker access to that
    application or topic.When transmitting highly personal or sensitive
    data, such as a credit card number, this icon

    appears, indicating that the data is encrypted
    during transmission.
    Note:You may be asked to (re)enable security
    as Nextel adds new services or upon your
    return to the U.S. after traveling.

    Vo i c e R e c o r d sA voice record is a recording you make with your
    phone and can play back. You can record notes to
    yourself or phone calls.
    Your phone can store up to 20 voice records.Creating Voice RecordsTorecordanotetoyourself:
    1From the main menu, selectVo i c e R e c o r d >
    [New VoiceRec].
    2Say the message you want to record into the
    microphone.
    Tip:To stop recording before you are finished,
    pressAunderPause. To start recording
    again, pressAunderResume.Tostop
    recording and discard the voice record at
    any time, pressAunderCancel.
    3When you are finished recording, pressO.
    Toaddtotheendofvoicerecord:
    1From the main menu, selectVo i c e R e c o r d.
    2Scroll to the voice record you want to add to.
    3Pressm.
    4SelectAdd To.
    5When you are finished recording, pressO.To record a phone call:
    1Whileonanactivecall,pressm.
    2SelectRecord.
    3When you are finished recording, pressO.
    Note:Recording of phone calls is subject to
    applicable laws regarding privacy and
    recording of phone conversations.
    Playing Voice Records1From the main menu, selectVo i c e R e c o r d.
    2Selectthevoicerecordyouwanttoplay.
    3To stop the voice record while it is playing, press
    O.
    Tip:To fast forward, scroll right. To rewind, scroll
    left. To pause or resume, press any number
    key.Labeling Voice RecordsWhen you create a voice record, it is labeled with
    the time and date it was recorded. You can then
    rename it with a custom label.
    1From the main menu, selectVo i c e R e c o r d.
    2Scroll to the voice record you want to label.

    5PressO.Deleting Voice RecordsTo delete a voice record:

    2Scroll to the unlocked voice record you want to
    delete.

    4SelectDelete.
    5PressOorAunderYesto confirm.
    To delete all voice records:
    1From the main menu, selectVo i c e R e c o r d.
    2Scroll to any voice record.
    3Pressm.
    4SelectDelete All.
    5PressOorAunderYesto confirm.Locking Voice RecordsWhen you lock a voice record, it cannot be deleted
    until you unlock it.
    1From the main menu, selectVo i c e R e c o r d.2Scroll to the voice record you want to lock or
    unlock.
    3Pressm.
    4SelectLockto lock the message.-or-
    SelectUnlockto unlock the message.
    When a voice record is locked, this icon
    Rappears
    next to it.
    Managing MemoryTo view the amount of memory available for voice
    records:
    1From the main menu, selectVo i c e R e c o r d.
    2With[New VoiceRec]highlighted, pressA
    underMemory.-or-
    With any voice record highlighted, pressm.
    SelectMemory.
    To free more memory by deleting all unlocked
    voice records:
    1From the voice records memory screen, press
    AunderDelete.

    Managing Memory
    Note:Voice records are stored in your phone
    using the same memory space used to
    store messages, Java application data,
    ring tones, and wallpaper images.
    Deleting some of these other items frees
    memory for voice records. 
    						
    							82Java ApplicationsYour phone arrives with Java applications loaded
    and ready to install. You can download and install
    more Java applications.
    To download and install more Java applications, go
    to www.nextel.com/idenupdate. You can also
    check theDownloadsmenu option on your phone
    for a catalog of additional items available for
    purchase and download.
    Note:Using Java applications may cause your
    phone to use up more battery power than
    other uses of your phone.Installing Applications1From the main menu, selectJava Apps.
    2Select the application or suite of applications
    you want to install.
    Installation messages appear as the application
    installs.
    3IfyouwanttocreateashortcuttotheJava
    application on the main menu: PressAunder

    Running ApplicationsTo run an application that has a shortcut on the
    main menu:
    1From the main menu, select the application or
    suite of applications you want to run.
    2Ifyouhaveselectedasuiteofapplications,
    selecttheapplicationyouwanttorun.
    To run an application that does not have a shortcut
    on the main menu:
    1From the main menu, selectJava Apps.
    2Select the application or suite of applications
    you want to run.
    3Ifyouhaveselectedasuiteofapplications,
    selecttheapplicationyouwanttorun.
    Tip:If you don’t hear the sounds associated with
    the Java application, selectSettings >
    Vo l u m eand check the volumes ofJava
    SpeakerandJava Earpiece.Suspending ApplicationsWhen you suspend an application, it does not stop
    running. It goes to the background so that you can
    run another application in the foreground.
    To suspend an application:
    Presseor close the flip.
