2Press down on the cartridge carrier levers to raise the cartridge carrier lids. 3Insert the black cartridge or the photo cartridge in the left carrier. Insert the color cartridge in the right carrier. 4Close the lids. 5Lift the scanner unit, gently push the scanner support towards the cartridge carriers, and carefully lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed. 6Load paper. 7Press and hold for three seconds to print an alignment page. 8Load the printed alignment page facedown on the scanner glass in the lower right corner, and close the top cover. 12 9Press again to align the cartridge(s). Note: The scanner unit must be closed to start a new scan, print, copy, or fax job. Achieving better print quality Improving print quality If you are not satisfied with the print quality of a document, make sure you: Use the appropriate paper for the document. If you are printing photos or other high quality images, for best results use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper or Lexmark Photo Paper. Use a paper that is a heavier weight or bright white. Select a higher print quality. If the document still does not have the print quality you want, follow these steps: 1Align the print cartridges. For more information, see “Aligning the print cartridges” on page 52. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 2. 2Clean the print cartridge nozzles. For more information, see “Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles” on page 53. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 3. 3Remove and reinsert the cartridges. For more information, see “Removing a used print cartridge” on page 50 and “Installing print cartridges” on page 50. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 4. 4Wipe the print cartridge nozzles and contacts. For more information, see “Wiping the print cartridge nozzles and contacts” on page 54. If print quality is still not satisfactory, replace the cartridge. For more information, see “Ordering paper and other supplies” on page 56. Aligning the print cartridges 1Load plain paper. 2Open the Solution Center. 3From the Maintenance tab, click Align to fix blurry edges. 4Click Print. The alignment page prints. 5Open the top cover of the printer. 6Place the printed alignment page facedown on the scanner glass in the lower right corner, and then close the top cover. 12 7Press . After a few seconds, an Alignment Success dialog appears on your computer screen. 8Click Close. 9Click Exit. If you aligned the cartridges to improve print quality, print your document again. If print quality has not improved, clean the print cartridge nozzles. Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles 1Load plain paper. 2Open the Solution Center. See “Using the Solution Center” on page 17. 3From the Maintenance tab, click Clean to fix horizontal streaks. 4Click Print. A page prints, forcing ink through the print cartridge nozzles to clean them. 5Print the document again to verify that the print quality has improved. 6If print quality has not improved, try cleaning the nozzles up to two more times. Wiping the print cartridge nozzles and contacts 1Remove the print cartridges. 2Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water. 3Gently hold the cloth against the nozzles for about three seconds, and then wipe in the direction shown. 4Using another clean section of the cloth, gently hold the cloth against the contacts for about three seconds, and then wipe in the direction shown. 5With another clean section of the cloth, repeat step 3 and step 4. 6Let the nozzles and contacts dry completely. 7Reinsert the print cartridges. 8Print the document again. 9If the print quality does not improve, clean the print nozzles. For more information, see “Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles” on page 53. 10Repeat step 9 up to two more times. 11If print quality is still not satisfactory, replace the print cartridges. Preserving the print cartridges Keep a new cartridge in its packaging until you are ready to install it. Do not remove a cartridge from the printer except to replace, clean, or store it in an airtight container. The cartridges do not print correctly if left exposed for an extended period of time. Keep the photo cartridge in its own storage unit when not in use. Cleaning the scanner glass 1Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water. 2Gently wipe the scanner glass clean. Note: Make sure all ink or corrective fluid on a document is dry before placing the document on the scanner glass. If you are printing from a computer, click Learn more on the message, select the check box, and click Close. If you are using the printer without a computer, press Cancel. Lexmark's warranty does not cover damage caused by non-Lexmark ink or print cartridges. Refilling a print cartridge The warranty does not cover repair of failures or damage caused by a refilled cartridge. Lexmark does not recommend use of a refilled cartridge. Refilling a cartridge can affect print quality and may cause damage to the printer. For best results, use Lexmark supplies. USB cable may not be connected1Check the USB cable for any obvious damage. 2Firmly plug the square end of the USB cable into the back of the printer. 3Firmly plug the rectangular end of the USB cable into the USB port of the computer. The USB port is marked with the USB symbol. Use these steps to install the printer software1Turn off and then restart your computer. 2Click Cancel on all New Hardware Found screens. 3Insert the CD, and then follow the instructions on the computer screen to reinstall the software. May need to reconnect power supply1Press to turn the printer off. 2Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 3Gently remove the power supply from the printer. 4Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. 6Press to turn the printer on. Check inkCheck the ink levels, and install new print cartridges if necessary. Cartridges may have tape on them1Remove the print cartridges. 2Make sure the sticker and tape have been removed. 12 3Reinsert the cartridges. Make sure the printer is set as the default printer and is not on hold or paused.1Click: In Windows XP Pro: Start Œ Settings Œ Printers and Faxes. In Windows XP Home: Start Œ Control Panel Œ Printers and Faxes. In Windows 2000 or Windows Vista: Start Œ Settings Œ Printers. 2Double-click the name of your printer. 3Click Printer.
