    AllLeupoldscopesfeatureadjustmentdialsthatcanberepositionedtoalign
    themarkedzeroofthedialwiththepositionindicatorwithoutchangingthe
    adjustmentsettingofthescopethatwasachievedwhensighting-in.This
    allowstheshootertoknowtheoriginalzerooftherifleintheeventthat
    furtheradjustmentsaremadeinthefield.
    TorepositionthedialsonRiflemanM,VXM-I,andFXM-Imodels,placeacoinor
    screwdriverintheslotinthenumbereddialandrotateitsothatthezero
    alignswiththestampedlineindicatormarkonthetopoftheadjustment
    screwthatisperpendiculartothecoinslot.

    adjusteasilyto
    indicatethenew
    zeroposition
    VX-IIandFX-II
    modelshavea
    pointerdialthatmoveswiththe
    adjustmentslot.Thisdialalsocan
    bemovedindependentlytoalign
    withthezeroontheoutermost
    dial.Torepositionthisdialsimply
    rotateituntilthepointeris
    alignedwiththezero.
    
    VX-III
    and
    FX-III
    modelshaveanindicatordialthatcanbemovedindependently
    toalignwiththezeroontheadjustmentdial.Torepositionthisdialsimply
    rotateituntilthepositionindicatornotchisalignedwiththezeroofthe

    Loosenthesetscrewsthatsurroundthetopoftheknobuntilthe
    cylinderturnsfreely.
    2.Movethecylinderdialbyhandtoalignthezerowiththewhite
    perpendicularmarkatthebaseofthecylinder.
    3.Tightenthesetscrewsuntilthecylinderissecure.
    
    Target-styledialscanbeadjustedtothenewzero
    positionbylooseningthesetscrews,rotatingthe
    dial,andtighteningthesetscrews.
    
    CENTERINGWINDAGEANDELEVATIONADJUSTMENTS
    TOACHIEVEOPTIMUMADJUSTMENTTRAVEL
    Makingwindageandelevationadjustmentsmovestheentireerectorsystem
    horizontallyandverticallyinsidethescope.Iftheerectorsystemisofftoone
    side-asaresultofhavingbeenmountedonanon-adjustablemount-the
    adjustmentswontprovideequaltravelinalldirections.Toregainfullbalanced
    travel,youmustrecentertheadjustmentasfollows:
    1.Turnthewindageadjustmenttothepointthatitstopsmoving.
    2.Countingtheclicksorhashmarks,turnitallthewayintheotherdirection.
    3.Turnthedialbackhalftheamountofclicksorhashmarkscounted.
    4.Repeatthisprocessfortheelevationadjustment.

    AboutVariablePowerScopes
    
    Leupoldvariablepowerscopesallowyoutoselectfromarangeofmagnifications
    tosuityourparticularrifle,cartridge,andshootingneeds.
    WARNING:Donotloosenthescrewinthepowerselectorring.Doingso
    will
    
    releasetheinternalnitrogenthatkeepsthescopefogfree.Looseningthe
    screwwillalsodisconnectapinthatcontrolstheinternaloperations,causing
    otherproblemsthatwouldrequirefactoryrepairs.Donotlubricatethepower
    selectorring;doingsoisunnecessary.
    Allvariablepowerscopeshaveapowerselectorringinfrontoftheeyepiece
    assembly.Turntheringtoalignthenumberindicatingthedesiredmagnification
    withtheindicatoronthebodyofthescope.
    RANGEESTIMATINGWITHVX-IIISCOPES
    SelectedVX-IIIscopeshaveabuilt-inrangeestimator.Thissystemusesthe
    Duplex.reticleincombinationwithanadditionalsetofnumbersonthepower
    selectorring.(AlsoseetheLeupoldRangeEstimatingReticleInstructionsfor
    otherreticletypes.)Inscopeswiththisfeaturethespacebetweenthetipofthe
    thickerpostoftheDuplexreticleandthecenterofthereticlecovers16inches
    at200yards(thesizeofaWhitetailbuckfrombackbonetobrisket).
    NOTE:TheDuplexreticlewasdesignedtoestimaterangesbasedonthebackbone
    tobrisketdimensionofaWhitetailbuck.Thedistanceofothergamewithabody
    dimensionthatisknowntobe16inches(or32inchesifthemeasurementistaken
    fromposttopostinsteadofpost
    tocrosshair)maycertainlybe
    estimated.Itisnecessarytoknow
    theapproximatephysicalsizeof
    yourtargetwheneveryou
    estimaterange.

    brisket,adjustthepowerselectoruntilthatareaoftheanimalsbodyfits

    3.Readthenumberonthepowerselectorringtodeterminethe
    approximatedistanceinyards.

    UNDERSTANDINGPARALLAX
    Parallaxistheapparentmovementofthetargetrelativetothereticlewhen
    youmoveyoureyeawayfromthecenterpointoftheeyepiece.Itoccurswhen
    theimageofthetargetdoesnotfallonthesameopticalplaneasthereticle.
    Thiscancauseasmallshiftinthepointofaim.
    Maximumparallaxoccurswhenyoureyeisattheveryedgeoftheexitpupil.
    (Eveninthisunlikelyevent,our4xhuntingscopefocusedfor150yardshasa
    maximumerrorofonly8/10thsofaninchat500yards.)
    Atshortdistances,theparallaxeffectdoesnotaffectaccuracy.(Usingthesame
    4xscopeat100yards,themaximumerrorislessthan211Othsofaninch.)Itis
    alsogoodtorememberthat,aslongasyouaresightingstraightthroughthe
    middleofthescope,orclosetoit,parallaxwillhavevirtuallynoeffecton
    accuracyinahuntingsituation.
    ABOUTFIXEDPARALLAXDISTANCESCOPES
    Anyfixedfocusopticalsystemcanbeadjustedtobeparallaxfreeatonlyone
    distance.MostLeupoldscopesareadjustedatthefactorytobeparallaxfreeat
    150yards.

    SideParallaxAdjustment
    
    THEADVANTAGEOFADJUSTABLE
    PARALLAXSETTINGSCOPES
    Targetshootingandvarminthuntingdemandextremeaccuracy.Youmusthave
    ascopewithaparallaxadjustmentdialforpreciseshootingatvariousranges.
    Theparallaxadjustmentcanbelocatedeitherattheobjectiveendofthescope
    oronthesideoftheadjustmentturrethousing.Theadjustmentmovesalens
    withinthescopecausingthetargetimageandthereticletofallonthesame
    opticalplane.Thisensuresoptimalaccuracyatthedistanceofthetarget.
    Toeliminateparallaxinadjustableobjectiveandlongrange(sidefocus)scopes,
    followthesesteps:
    1.Thereticleshouldbeclear(focused)beforeadjustingtheparallax.Ifitis
    not,followtheinstructionsunderFocusingtheReticle.Seepage8.
    2.Withthefirearminastableposition,lookthroughthescope,concentrating
    onthecenteraimingpointofthereticle.
    3.Moveyourheadslightlyupanddownwhileturningsideparallaxor
    adjustableobjectiveringuntilthereticledoesnotmoveinrelationtothe
    target.UsingthenumbersontheAdjustableObjectivering,youcanget
    yourparallaxadjustmentsclosetothepropersettingbeforeassuminga
    shootingposition.
    NOTE:
    Settingsmayvaryslightlyperindividualpreferences,airtemperature,and
    atmosphericconditions.

    (ExtendedFocusRange)scopescaneliminateparallaxfordistances
    asshortas10meters.Unlikeconventionaladjustableobjectivescopes,thefocus
    ringonEFRmodelsrotatesmorethan3600.Itisimportanttopayspecial
    attentionwhenadjustingthesescopes.
    1.Turnthefocus
    ring
    counterclockwise(whenviewingthoughtheeye-
    piece)untilitstops.
    2.Turnthefocus
    ring
    clockwiseuntilthe10mmarkalignswiththeindica-
    tormarkonthebellofthescope.
    3.Fromthispoint,allreadingsofthefocusringareinnumericalorder
    whentheringisturnedclockwisefromtheshootingposition.
    4.Adjusttheringasyou
    would
    astandardadjustableobjectivemodel.
    INSTALLINGALENSATTACHMENT
    ManyLeupoldscopesofferthreadedobjectiveandeyepieceringstoallow
    fortheattachmentoflenscoversandavarietyofAlumina.accessories.These
    attachmentsthreaddirectlyintotheobjectiveoreyepiecerings.Turnuntil
    fingertight
    -donotover
    tighten.

    UsingtheIlluminatedReticle
    AllLeupoldIlluminatedReticlescopesmaybeusedineitherthestandardor
    theilluminatedstate.Whennotilluminated,thereticleperformsthesameas
    thereticleinastandardLeupoldscope.Illuminatingthereticleallowsabetter
    distinctiontobemadeinpoorlylightedconditionsbetweenthetargetandthe
    precisepositionoftheaimingpoint.
    
    ThecontroldialfortheLeupold
    IlluminatedReticleislocated
    abovetheeyepiece.
    
    Toilluminatethereticle:
    1.Grasptheilluminationdiallocatedatthetopoftheeyepieceshell.
    2.TurnthedialclockwisefromtheOFFpositiontothefirstnumberindicated
    onthedial.
    3.Viewthetargetthroughthescopetodetermineifthereticleisbright
    enoughtostandoutclearlyagainstthetarget.
    4.Ifmoreilluminationisrequired,continueturningthedialclockwiseuntil
    thereticleisclearlyvisibleagainstthetarget.
    Topreservethelifeofthebattery,alwaysremembertoturntheilluminationdial
    totheOFFpositionwhenthescopeisnotinuse.Forprolongedstorage,remove
    thebattery.
    Ifthereticlefailstoilluminateorappearsdimevenonthehighestillumination
    setting,itisnecessarytochangethebattery.
    WARNING:Alwayschecktoensurethatthefirearmisunloadedbefore
    changingthebatteryinthescope.

    untilitissecurewhileholdingthesidesoftheilluminationdialtokeep
    theentiredialfromturning.

    thusincreasinglighttransmissionthroughthescope.Theyshouldbecleanedas
    carefullyasyouwouldacameralens.Beginbyusingalensbrushtoremovedust
    andthenpurealcohol,high-gradeglasscleaner,orpurewateronacottonswab.
    WINDAGE/ELEVATIONADJUSTMENTS
    Theseadjustmentsarepermanentlylubricated.Thereisnoneedtolubricate
    them.Keeptheturretcapson,exceptwhenadjusting,tokeepoutdustand
    dirt.(Itsworthnotingthat,unlikecompetitivebrands,Leupoldscopesare
    waterproofevenwithoutthecapsinplace.)
    EYEPIECEADJUSTMENT
    Thisadjustmentispermanentlylubricated.Thereisnoneedtolubricateit.The
    eyepiececanberotatedasfarasitwillgoineitherdirection.Itwillnotdetach
    fromthescopebecauseofaninternallockring.
    SEALS
    Leupoldscopesaresealedfromwithinbyseveralmethods,includingO-rings.
    Allsealsarepermanentandrequirenomaintenance.
    SCOPEEXTERIOR
    Leupoldscopesaremadeofrugged6061-T6aircraftaluminumalloy.No
    maintenanceofanykindisrequired;simplywipeoffanydirtorfingerprints
    thataccumulatewithaclean,drycloth.

    TROUBLESHOOTINGTIPS
    Beforeyoushipascopebacktothefactoryforserviceorrepair,pleasecheck
    thefollowingitemstomakesurethattheproblemisreallywiththescopeand
    nottherifleormountsystem.
    1.Checkthemount.Makesurethescopeismounteusecurelytothe
    rifle.Try,withbarehandsonly,totwistthescopeintheringsorseeif
    anythingmoveswhenyoujiggleit.Ifthereisanymovement,retighten
    themountingsystemaccordingtomountinginstructions.
    2.Makesuretheactionofyourrifleisproperlybeddedinthestock,and
    thatallreceiverscrewsaretightandhavebeentightenedinthesequence
    recommendedbythemanufacturer.Alooselyfittedstockcancause
    changestothepoint-of-impact.
    3.Whentestfiringarifletocheckthepoint-of-impactrelativeto
    windageandelevationadjustments,besuretofirefromasolidbench
    withsandbagssupportingtheforearmandbuttstock.
    4.Besuretousefactory-loadedammunitionofthesamebullettype,weight,
    andpreferably,lotnumber.Ifonetypeofammunitiondoesnotshoot
    well,tryanotherbrandorbulletweight.
    5.Becertainthatboththebarrelandchamberareclean.Heavyfactory
    greaseonanewrifleandcopperfoulingonanolderonecandiminish
    theaccuracyofthefirearm.
    LeupoldTechnicalService
    IfyourLeupoldGoldenRingscopefailstoperforminanyway,youmayreturn
    itdirectlytothefactory(oroneofourinternationalservicecenters)forservice.
    ItisnotnecessaryforyourdealertoshipthescopetoLeupold;however,they
    canbeveryhelpfulindeterminingiffactoryserviceisnecessary.Pleasefollow
    theseshippinginstructions:
    1.Removetheringsandanyotheraccessoriesfromthescope.
    2.Recordtheserialnumberofthescopeandkeepitforyourrecords.
    3.Includeanotewithyourname,address,telephonenumber,E-mail,and
    adescriptionoftheproblem.
    4.Packthescopeinitsoriginalbox(ifyouhaveit),asthisisthesafest
    shippingcontainer.Wrapthepackagesecurelyusingfilamentstrapping
    tapeontheoutside.
