DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION DEFENDER 97MY 4.21 FullBeam When thecolumn switchismoved tothe main beam position (C036-5), current is supplied tofuse 13(C580-25) andfuse 14(C580-27) ofthe passenger compartment fusebox.Both areconnected byblue/white wires.Afeed isalso supplied tothe main beam warning lamp(C233-5) onablue/white wire. Fuse 13(C580-26) suppliesafeed tothe RH headlamp (C011-1)ona blue/orange wire.Theheadlamp isearthed (C011-3) onablack wire. Similarily, fuse14(C580-28) suppliesafeed tothe LHheadlamp (C009-1)ona blue/slate wire.Theheadlamp isearthed (C009-3) onablack wire. Headlamp Flash Fusiblelink2(C907-2) ofthe engine compartment fuseboxsupplies aconstant battery feedtofuse 2(C580-3) ofthe passenger compartment fusebox.Fuse 2 (C580-4) isconnected tothe column switch(C036-7) byapurple wire. When thecolumn switchispulled backtothe flash position, currentflows across theswitch (C036-5) andprovides afeed tofuse 13(C580-25), fuse14 (C580-27) andtheinstrument packwarning lamp(C233-5) onblue/white wires. All 3are earthed onblack wiresasdescribed inthe Full Beam description.

DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION 4.22 DEFENDER97MY EXTERIOR LAMPS-Rear FogLamps DESCRIPTION The rear foglamps onlyoperate whentheheadlamps areilluminated andthe ignition switchisin position II.The non- latching switchispositioned inthe centre ofthe dash panel. Whentherear foglamps areswitched on,the instrument packwarning lampalsoilluminates. Thefoglamps areautomatically switched offevery timetheignition isturned off. OPERATIONFeed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tothe engine compartment fuse box(C632-1) byabrown wire.Current flowsthrough fusiblelink1and fusible link2ofthe engine compartment fusebox,which areconnected in parallel. Fusible link1ofthe engine compartment fusebox(C907-1) isconnected tothe lighting switch(C041-1) byabrown wire.Withthelighting switchineither the side ormain lampposition, currentflowsacross theswitch (C041-4) tothe headlamp relay(C282-87) onablue wire. Asthe relay isnot energized, the relay switch isopen, preventing currentflow. Fusible link2ofthe engine compartment fusebox(C907-2) isconnected tothe ignition switch(C026-1) byabrown wire.Withtheignition switchinposition II (C094-1), currentflowstothe headlamp relaycoil(C282-85) onawhite wire. The relay coilisearthed (C282-86) onablack wire. With therelay coilenergized, therelay switch closes, allowing currenttoflow from theheadlamp relay(C282-30) tofuse 6ofthe passenger compartment fuse box(C580-11). Fuse6ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-12) is connected tothe rear fogguard lampECU(C543-2) byablue/purple wire. The rear fogguard lampECU(C543-4) isconnected tothe rear fogguard lamp switch (C064-2) byared/slate wire.When theswitch isdepressed momentarily, itprovides anearth (C064-3) onablack wire.Thefogguard lamp ECUis alsoearthed (C543-1) directlyonablack wire.When theECU senses the second earthviathe switch, itprovides afeed (C543-3) tothe instrument pack warning lamp(C233-4), theRH rear fogguard lamp(C512-1), andtheLH rear fogguard lamp(C515-1). Allthree areconnected inparallel byred/yellow wires, andearthed onblack wires.

DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION DEFENDER 97MY 4.23 INDICATORS /HAZARD WARNING LAMPS DESCRIPTION The indicators arecontrolled fromthesteering columnswitchandoperate when theignition switchisin position II. The hazard lampswitch islocated towards theright hand sideofthe dash panel. Hazard operation isnot dependent onthe position ofthe ignition switch. When thehazard switchisdepressed, bothleftand right hand indicator lights flash. OPERATION Feed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tothe engine compartment fuse box(C632-1) byabrown wire.Power flowsthrough fusiblelink2(C907-2) and feeds boththeignition switch(C028-1) andfuse 1(C580-1) ofthe passenger compartment fuseboxonbrown wires.Theignition switchandthe fuse 1ofthe passenger compartment fuseboxareconnected inparallel. Fuse 1 (C580-2) isconnected tothe hazard warning lampswitch (C096-7) bya purple wire. Indicators Withtheignition switchinposition II,power flowsacross theignition switch (C094-1) tofuse 3ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-5) byawhite wire. Fuse 3ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-6) isconnected to the hazard warning switch(C096-8) byagreen wire.Withthehazard warning switch inthe offposition, powerflowsthrough theswitch (C096-5) andupto the flasher unit(C547-85) onalight green wire.Theflasher unitisearthed (C547- 86)onablack wire.Withtheflasher unitenergized, afeed (C547-87) is sent tothe column switch(C036-3) onagreen/brown wire.

DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION 4.24 DEFENDER97MY Left Turn Moving thecolumn switchtothe leftturn position allowspowertoflow through the switch (C036-4) tothe LHrear direction indicatorlamp(C403-2), theLH front direction indicatorlamp(C001-2), andtheLHside repeater lamp (C013-1). These3lamps areconnected inparallel andareallfed bygreen/red wires. Power isalso supplied tothe instrument packwarning lamp(C230-10) on agreen/red wire.Alllamps areearthed onblack wires. Withthecircuit complete, theflasher unitcommences openingandclosing thecircuit, causing the LHindicator lampstoflash. Right Turn Moving thecolumn switchtothe right turnposition allowspowertoflow through the switch (C036-2) tothe RH rear direction indicatorlamp(C402-2), theRH front direction indicatorlamp(C002-2), andtheRH side repeater lamp (C012-1). These3lamps areconnected inparallel andareallfed by green/white wires.Power isalso supplied tothe instrument packwarning lamp (C230-9) onagreen/white wire.Alllamps areearthed onblack wires. Withthe circuit complete, theflasher unitcommences openingandclosing thecircuit, causing theRH indicator lampstoflash.

DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION DEFENDER 97MY 4.25 Hazards Thehazard warning switch(C096-7) issupplied withapermanent feedfrom fuse 1(C580-2) ofthe passenger compartment fuseboxonapurple wire. Pressing theswitch tothe onposition allowspowertoflow through theswitch (C096-5) tothe flasher unit(C547-85) onalight green wire.Theflasher unit (C547-87) isconnected tothe following viathe hazard warning switch (C096-2). Hazard warning lamptelltale (C913-1) byabrown/red wire.RHfront direction indicatorlamp(C002-2) byagreen/white wire.RHrear direction indicatorlamp(C402-2) byagreen/white wire.InstrumentpackRHindicator warninglamp(C230-9) byagreen/white wire.LHfront direction indicatorlamp(C001-2) byagreen/red wire.LHrear direction indicatorlamp(C403-2) byagreen/red wire.Instrument packLHindicator warninglamp(C230-10) byagreen/red wire. With theflasher unitenergized, thecircuit isrepeatedly openandclosed, causing allindicator lampstoflash.

DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION 4.26 DEFENDER97MY INTERIOR LAMPS DESCRIPTION Dependant onmodel, theDefender isprovided witheither oneortwo interior lamps. Oneinthe front, andoneinthe rear ofthe vehicle (iffitted). Bothlamps can beswitched onmanually usingtheirintegral switches. Ifany door, including thetaildoor, areopened, thelamp(s) willilluminate. If an immobilisation systemisfitted tothe vehicle, thelamps arecontrolled by the Alarm ECU.TheECU contains atime outfeature whichswitches offthe interior lampsaftereight minutes ifany door isleft open, thuspreventing unnecessary batterydrain. OPERATION Non -immobilisation (Defender90Hard Toponly) Feed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tofusible link2(C632-1) of the engine compartment fuseboxbyabrown wire.Fusible link2(C907-2) is connected tofuse 2(C580-3) ofthe passenger compartment fuseboxbya brown wire. Fuse 2ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-4) suppliesacurrent to both thefront (C317-3) andrear (C356-3) interiorlampsonpurple wires.Both lamps areconnected inparallel. Thefront interior lamphasanintegral switch. With thisswitch inthe off(normal) position(C317-1) thelamp canonly be earthed bythe LH(C266-1) andRH(C265-1) doorswitches. Bothswitches are connected inparallel bypurple/blue wires.Withthefront doors inthe closed position bothdoor switches areopen, failing toprovide aroute toearth. Therefore thelamp does notilluminate. Ifeither theLHorRH door isopened, the circuit iscompleted andthefront interior lampwillilluminate. With theintegral switchinthe onposition (C318-1) adirect routetoearth is provided onablack wire,illuminating thelamp. The rear interior lamp(C356-1) isconnected tothe taildoor switch (C751-1) by a purple/blue wire.Ifthe taildoor isopened, thecircuit iscompleted andthe rear interior lampwillilluminate.

DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION DEFENDER 97MY 4.27 Immobilisation(Defender90&110 Hard Toponly) Feed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tofusible link2(C632-1) of the engine compartment fuseboxbyabrown wire.Current flowsthrough fusible link2(C907-2) tofuse 2(C580-3) ofthe passenger compartment fuse box onabrown wire. Fuse 2ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-4) isconnected tothe front interior lamp(C317-2) byapurple wire.Theinterior lamphasanintegral switch. Withthisswitch inthe off(normal) position(C317-1), afeed issent to the alarm ECU(C061-1). TheAlarm ECUisconnected (C061-16)tothe tail door switch (C751-1) andtheLHdoor switch (C033-1), whicharewired in parallel. Bothareconnected bypurple/blue wires.Withbothofthese doors closed, thedoor switches areopen, andfailtoprovide aroute toearth forthe ECU. Ifeither doorisopened, theswitch isclosed, providing aroute toearth and illuminating theinterior lamp. The alarm ECU(C061-5) isalso connected tothe RH door switch (C054-1) on a slate/white wire.Withthedoor closed, thedoor switch isopen, andfails to provide aroute toearth forthe ECU. Ifthe door isopened, theswitch isclosed, providing aroute toearth andilluminating theinterior lamp. With theinterior lampswitch inthe onposition (C318-1), adirect routetoearth is provided onablack wire,illuminating thelamp. The alarm ECUalsoreceives asignal fromtheRFhandset (seeengine immobilisation). Whenthecorrect signalisreceived, thealarm ECUwill illuminate theinterior lamp.Thelamp willremain illuminated untileither the alarm isre- armed usingthehandset, theignition isswitched toposition II,or the time outperiod elapses.

DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION 4.28 DEFENDER97MY Immobilisation (Defender110Truck Cabonly) Feed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tofusible link2ofthe engine compartment fusebox(C632-1) byabrown wire.Fusible link2 (C907-2) isconnected tofuse 2(C580-3) ofthe passenger compartment fuse box byabrown wire. Fuse 2ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-4) suppliesacurrent to the interior lamp(C357-3) onapurple wire.Theinterior lamphasanintegral switch. Withthisswitch inthe off(normal) position(C357-1) theonly earth path is via the alarm ECU(C061-1) onapurple/white wire. The alarm ECU(C061-16) isconnected tothe LHdoor switch (C033-1) bya purple/blue wire.Ifthe LHdoor isclosed, thedoor switch isopen, andfails to provide aroute toearth forthe ECU. Ifthe door isopened, theswitch isclosed, providing aroute toearth andilluminating theinterior lamp.Thealarm ECU (C061-5) isalso connected tothe RH door switch (C054- 1),this time bya slate/white wire.TheRHdoor switch operates inthe same wayasthe LHdoor switch. With theinterior lampintegral switchinthe onposition (C563-1), adirect route to earth isprovided onablack wire,illuminating thelamp. The alarm ECUalsoreceives asignal fromtheRFhandset (seeengine immobilisation). Whenthecorrect signalisreceived, thealarm ECUwill illuminate theinterior lamp.Thelamp willremain illuminated untileither the alarm isre- armed usingthehandset, theignition isswitched toposition II,or the time outperiod elapses.

DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION DEFENDER 97MY 4.29 Immobilisation(Defender90/110 Station Wagon, &Crew Cab) Feedfromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tofusible link2(C632-1) of the engine compartment fuseboxbyabrown wire.Fusible link2(C907-2) is connected tofuse 2(C580-3) ofthe passenger compartment fuseboxbya brown wire.Fuse 2ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-4) supplies a current tothe front interior lamp(C357-3) andtherear interior lamp(C925-3), which areconnected inparallel. Bothlamps arefedbypurple wires. The front interior lamphasanintegral switch.Withthisswitch inthe off (normal) position(C357-1), theonly earth pathisvia the alarm ECU(C061-1) on apurple/white wire. The alarm ECU(C061-5) isconnected tothe RH front door switch (C054-1) by a slate/white wire.Ifthe RH front door isclosed, thedoor switch isopen, and fails toprovide aroute toearth forthe ECU. Ifthe door isopened, theswitch is closed, providing aroute toearth andilluminating theinterior lamp.Thealarm ECU (C061-16) isalso connected tothe LHfront door switch (C033-1), this time byapurple/blue wire.TheLHfront door switch operates inthe same way as the RH door switch. Connected inparallel withtheLHfront door switch isthe taildoor switch (C751-1), theRH rear door switch (C930-1), andtheLHrear door switch (C930-1). Allthree switches areconnected bypurple/blue wiresandwork inthe same wayasthe RH front door switch. With thefront interior lampintegral switchinthe onposition (C563-1), adirect route toearth isprovided onablack wire,illuminating thelamp.

DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION 4.30 DEFENDER97MY The rear interior lampoperates inthe same wayasthe front interior lamp. When theintegral switchisin the off(normal) position(C925-1), theonly earth path isvia the alarm ECU(C061-1) onapurple/white wire.Thedoor switches are fedbythe alarm ECUasbefore. With therear interior lampintegral switchinthe onposition (C563-1), adirect route toearth isprovided onablack wire,illuminating thelamp. The alarm ECUalsoreceives asignal fromtheRFhandset (seeengine immobilisation). Whenthecorrect signalisreceived, thealarm ECUwill illuminate theinterior lamp.Thelamp willremain illuminated untileither the alarm isre- armed usingthehandset, theignition isswitched toposition II,or the time outperiod elapses.
