DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION 4.14 DEFENDER97MY WIPERS ANDWASHERS DESCRIPTION The front windscreen wipersarecontrolled fromthecolumn switchandoperate when theignition switchisin position II.The wipers have2speed settings, along withaflick wipe andsingle wipefacility. Anintermittent wipefunction and programmed washwipefacility iscontrolled bythe front wiper delay unit. Moving thewiper switch downfromtheoffposition initiatestheintermittent wipe function. Movingthewiper switch upone position fromtheoffposition, operates thewipers atslow speed. Moving thewiper switch uptwo positions from theoffposition, operates thewipers atfast speed. Pushing thewiper switch upfrom theoffposition, notallowing itto latch, andthen releasing it causes thewipers toperform asingle wipecycle atslow speed. Pushing and holding thewiper switch upfrom theoffposition, notallowing itto latch, causes the wipers tooperate atslow speed untilthewiper switch isreleased. Pressing theend ofthe wiper switch, initiates theprogrammed washwipe sequence. Thewindscreen washersoperatewhiletheswitch ispressed and the wipers continue tooperate foranumber ofcycles aftertheswitch is released. The rear screen wiperandwash facilities arecontrolled byaswitch mounted on the dash panel. Pressing theswitch causes therear washer tooperate until the switch isreleased. Therear wiper doesnotoperate automatically withthe rear wiper. Turning theswitch clockwise causestherear wiper tooperate until the switch isturned backtothe offposition.
DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION DEFENDER 97MY 4.15 OPERATION Feed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tothe engine compartment fuse box(C632-1) byabrown wire.Current passesthrough fusiblelink2 (C907-2) whichisconnected tothe ignition switch(C028-1) byabrown wire. With theignition switchinposition II,power flowsacross theswitch (C094-1) to fuse 3(C580-5) andfuse 4(C580-7) ofthe passenger compartment fuse box, which areconnected inparallel. Botharefedbywhite wires. Fuse3 supplies therear wash/wiper circuit, andfuse 4the front wash/wipe circuit. FrontWipers andWashers Fuse 4ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-8) suppliesthefront wiper delay unit(C303-8) a12 volt feed onagreen wirewhen theignition switch isin position II. SlowandFast Speeds Fuse 4also provides afeed tothe wash/wipe switch(C278-6) onagreen wire. Moving theswitch tothe slow speed position allowspowertoflow across the switch (C278-1), tothe wiper motor (C030-3) onablue/light greenwire. This feed intothewiper motor doesnotenergize allthe motor windings, therefore the motor operates atslow speed. Thewiper motor isearthed (C030-1) ona black wire.Moving thewiper switch tothe fast position allowspowertoflow through theswitch (C278-5) tothe wiper motor (C030-5) onared/light green wire. Thistime, allmotor windings areenergized andthemotor operates atfast speed. Again, thewiper motor (C030-1) isearthed onablack wire. With thepark switch closed, powerflowsacross theswitch (C030-2) tothe front wiper delay unit(C303-5) onabrown/light greenwire.Thefront wiper delay unit(C303-2) isconnected tothe wash/wipe switch(C278-4) bya yellow/light greenwire.Power flowsthrough thewash/wipe switch(C278-1) to the wiper motor (C030-3) onablue/light greenwire.Thewiper motor isearthed on ablack wire.Thewipers operate untiltheir park position isreached andthe park switch opens, cuttingpowersupply tothe wiper motor. Intermittent WiperFunction Moving thewiper switch tothe intermittent wipeposition allowspowertoflow across theswitch (C278-3) tothe front wiper delay unit(C303-1) ona white/green wire.Witha12 volt signal applied tothe delay unitfrom thewiper switch, thedelay unitswitches theroute toearth (C303-4) onand off approximately every5seconds onablack wire. Programmed Wash/WipeFunction Depressingtheend ofthe wiper switch operates theprogrammed wash/wipe function. Thewasher switch(C278-6) issupplied fromfuse4ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-8) onagreen wire. When theswitch isclosed, power flowsthrough theswitch (C278-2) tothe front wiper delay unit(C303-6) on agreen/black wire, andtothe windscreen washerpump(C008-2) on another green/black wire.Thewasher pumpisearthed (C008-1) onablack wire.
DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION DEFENDER 97MY 4.17 When thedelay unit(C303-6) receivesafeed from thewasher switch(C278-2), it outputs afeed (C303-2) tothe wash/wipe switch(C278-4) onayellow/light green wire.Power flowsoutthrough thewash/wipe switch(C278-1) andonto the wiper motor (C030-3), whichoperates atslow speed. Whenthewasher switch isreleased, thedelay unitwilloperate thewipers forafurther 3cycles. Once thishas been completed, feedtothe wash/wipe switchiscut bythe delay unit and thepark circuit isinitiated. Rear Wiper Therear wiper switch (C918-1) issupplied byfuse 3ofthe passenger compartment fuseboxonagreen wire. When theswitch isin the on position (C915-1), powerisfed tothe rear screen wipermotor (C388-2) onared/light green wire.Thewiper motor (C388-1) isearthed onablack wire. ParkCircuit Positioning thewiper switch tothe off position cutspower tothe wiper motor on the red/light greenwire.Thepark circuit operates toreturn thewiper toits park position. Thepark switch (C079-2), integraltothe wiper motor unit, receives a12 volt supply fromfuse3ofthe passenger compartment fusebox (C580-6) onagreen wire.Thepark switch isclosed withthewiper inany position exceptitspark position With thepark switch closed, powerflowsacross thepark switch (C079-1) tothe wiper switch (C916-1) onabrown/light greenwire.Power flowsthrough the wiper switch (C915-1) tothe wiper motor (C388-2) onared/light greenwire.
